As a beta, it functions as described. It's a digital reader, and a good tool to have on the go if, like me, you're a DM or player who wants to brush up on rules or campaign settings. It is NOT an app-version of the full website. Here's my reasons for an average star-rating: 1. Some of the in-text links are not formatted correctly, and lead nowhere. This appears to auto-report when it happens though. 2. This app has no option of deleting individual downloads to free storage space.

Hey, thanks for continuing to update the app. I know it's in beta so there are some issues, but it's still really helpful for the moment. Me and my friend did run into an issue with the backgrounds. He has an iPhone and I have an Android, and on both when looking at the backgrounds the feat will be presented but no description. Such as when looking at the Haunted One background, it will have "Feature: Heart of Darkness" but then nothing else about the feature. No details and it's not a link, so you can't just go to a new page to see what it is. Just a small bug I noticed while reading the new content, but otherwise it's a wonderful app. I know you've heard it a million times, but I can't wait for the character creation to be implemented. Anyways hope this helped in anyway, you guys have a great day.

When the app was working, I would have given it a solid 3. Lack of features like character creation and dark mode aside, there was a consistent issue where the books would say "access token expired", and I would be unable to purchase new books. The way to fix this was just to reload the app. However, a recent update to the catalog has caused the app to stop working for me as a whole. The program keeps stopping when it tries to initialize the catalog. I give it a 1 star until it is fixed.

Images won't load properly, so the home page shows a blank screen with a green title that says "compendium". If I click a random place it may take me to one of the available handbooks that's supposed to be mapped to the homescreen. Inside each handbook I can navigate through the links, but it looks awful, plain html. In the dark theme, blue hyperlinks look terrible. The other tabs (spells, equipment, magic items, etc...) won't load, a loading circle will keep spinning in the middle of the screen without any results. Besides all that, there're still some features missing that would make this app valuable, it still won't allow me to check my characters, play my character sheets, or check my homebrew content. D&D Beyond is a great system, but this app has still a long way to go before reaching a good potential as a companion for the web platform.

The browser service is excellent. Have some minor critiques but overall i am extremely satisfied and it is how i will be purchasing all my dnd material from here on out. But the app leaves some things to be desired. I was surprised that the character creator was not available on the app but i guess that makes sense, and the website is well optimized for phone browsers anyway so that's okay. And the interface is kind of clunky (but i definitely appreciate the convenience of the interactive table of contents). But my main conplaint is that every single time i open the app it has to download... something. Idk what. Then after a few minutes of downloading it takes me to a splash page that never loads and i have to navigate my way back to the home page. It's not a huge thing but it really hampers my ability to just pull up a reference on the fly

A decent compendium and reference guide, but that's all. The DnD Beyond mobile site has so many features, including character creation and management, homebrew content, the ability to actively adjust stats and inventory mid-campaign... hell, the entire group I play with uses the mobile site instead of character sheets, and it's incredibly easy to use. I downloaded the app hoping it would be the same thing made more accessible, and it's strange to see that it's just a glossary instead.

Great idea bad execution. I cannot for the life of me figure out why they decided to display the data the way they do. The books are very hard to navigate, why not have a linked table of contents as a side bar menu? Why tap on the screen to get a quick navigation aid, if you accidently tap on a picture it just gives you a full screen picture? Why are the monsters in multiple formats, in one view it breaks up the block into multiple pages, in other views it looks like the book?

ambitious and wonderful in spirit. I want to encourage important digital tools that can overlay on traditionally pen and paper games. There are still some key issues. very readable and navigable content, which is essential when you're searching across tomes. minus two stars for the fact that I have to open it twice for it to load properly, minus 1 for the amount of time it takes to load and check licenses, and minus 1 for not being caught up with the web app version. I will revisit my score

It does the job, but the UX could do with improvement. Sometimes things don't load. Switching categories will sometimes not take affect. Downloading books seems to work, but I don't get anything in the UI that says it's happening until it's done. Should also include homebrew stuff I've created or added to my collection. The compendium UI isn't great - I'd rather have a list of books with purchased books at the top and others below, rather than tiles all mixed together.

The app is a useful way to look through the books you have from their website. I'm hoping they add character sheet functionality, too, but I haven't heard any news on that front. Update 10/20/18: They've added a way to look through items and monsters and create and everything, and the app is INFINITELY better for it. It's allowing me to replace many other D&D apps. Once they get character sheet functionality, it will be perfect!

Rob. M. Sep 25, 2019

I almost never one star an app unless it is truly broken. However in this case it's because the website is just all around better. No ability for individual purchase options. No character sheet information. Constantly having to force quit the app to get rid of access token error. It's easier to just have the site open on your phone's browser. The only upside I can think of is if for some reason you REALLY need to access something offline but that's it.

Jus. O. Feb 25, 2020

Being able to see your books offline is a cool thought, but the execution is terrible. The app is insanely buggy, it's a toss-up whether it'll let you download your book or it'll get to 25% progress and forget what it's doing. Reinstalling doesn't help. Also, no support for character sheets, which is the main thing I use D&D Beyond for. They need to do a better job bug testing their app.

Unfortunately, nothing but problems. I've had to uninstall and reinstall it almost weekly for months now. Images randomly stop displaying (including book cover art) and it shows HTML data without CSS until i reinstall it. The content is way too expensive for these kinds of problems to be happening so frequently. Also, as many others have mentioned, no in app character sheets. Consider other options that are cheaper, with more functions and better reliability.

Pat. O. May 9, 2020

Requiring all sourcebooks to be downloaded to access information is odd. If one is connected to the internet they should be able to view the information as they wish. Obviously offline availability should still be an option, I just find it odd that it's required to download the entire book to view a few lines of text. The inability to view character sheets is a major negative as well. I understand there is a separate app in development, but it should have been present in this app from day one.

I would like to complain about how when you either go to the filtering in the monster, spell and magic items. It doesn't show the results I want. For example when putting in the challenge rating for monster to find when my druid can transform into it gives me a blank and will eventually close the app. Other than that the app is great but I want the filtering system to be fixed please.

Ru. H. Sep 20, 2019

Current release crashes repeatedly until I uninstall, reinstall, then re-download all of my content (about 4GB worth). Then it will work for a bit until it crashes again and I have to repeat the whole process. I could give a more nuanced review of what I like and dislike about the app as a whole (when it's working), but since it's just Crashfest '97 right now there's no point.

If you're looking for an easy way to read the virtual copies of the books you bought, you have came to the right place, anything else........not so much. Compared to the desktop version of the app, this is "not good" to put it lightly. You can't even view your created characters, which would have been the MOST important feature for me and prob a lot of other people.

J-Y. B. Feb 24, 2020

Nice to check on the digital digital books you bought from them, once i got a minor bug not allowing me to access the store from the app, a simple reboot of the app fixed it, i wish you could have access to your character sheets trough the app as well, or maybe a link to the page, it works fine if you also log on the website, but would be nice to have everything in one place, on the app. Other then that i really love this service.

Jos. S. Feb 19, 2019

Great for searching items and spells etc. but that's about it. Interface is awful, can't (or at least I couldn't figure out how to) delete the very large sources once you've downloaded them. Can't look at your Characters or Campaigns, which is the entire reason I downloaded the app. But hey they implemented purchasing new content, so priorities right? 😂

Eri. B. Feb 10, 2020

I love when this app works, but it hardly ever does. When I try to download content that I've purchased, I get a never-ending "downloading" message. On my phone, I can "fix" this by deleting my cache and all storage from the app, then uninstalling and reinstalling it (this, every time I purchase something new), but nothing works on my tablet. UPDATE: Several months later, still having the same problem. Talked to their help desk once and was told the whole delete-storage-and-reinstall routine.

Fen. May 21, 2019

I've absolutely loved this app! The format is easy to follow, packed full of information, and grants easy access to new and old information alike! The only issues I've noticed with this app (though, I'm unsure if this is an issue for any others) is that when i purchase a new book I have difficulty downloading the book onto my device? The download will begin but around different intervals of time the download will suddenly shut off and force me to start over (this also loses the past progress)

At best, the app is a supplement. You can't manage your creations which is a big gap that's missing from this and preventing it from being a minimum marketable product. Not related to the app, specifically, but it's very frustrating that I've purchased hardcover copies of the material books and cannot add them to the D&DBeyond ecosystem.

Wol. T. Jan 28, 2020

I own all the material on D&D Beyond and I really want to like and use this app. However, it crashes all the time at the most random moments. All the material is there and I love the bookmarking feature, but I literally cannot use this app. I end up having to just load it in my browser because it is unusable. I am using the Samsung Note 9 and I have a Chromebook as well, same issue. I am going to continue to use D&D Beyond, on the browser, but please update the and fix the app.

Having access to all the shared info and books on my phone is cool, but what I would really like to see added is my character sheets. I don't want to have to pull up the website for my character sheets of I have the app open. It kind of makes the app pointless. The app is connected to my account. I should be able to see my sheet. Like I can on the website. Also, navigating the books can be a bit clunky and frustrating. Not unusable tho.

Rya. P. Apr 7, 2020

Very limited application. You can only access books that you've purchased & the search feature is not terribly useful. I should have access to certain information but when I go to search for it, it doesn't pull it up. Navigation is pretty terrible. An example is trying search a stat block for a dog. Maybe more keywords are needed in DB? There's no access to the online tool set like character sheets & such... The books we buy from you aren't cheap, least you could do is write a decent app.

Taw. T. Jan 30, 2020

Haven't touched this app in 2 years because of the limited functionality, decided to check back in for changes... still can't access character sheets etc. Useless. I've already got the books I need and am not willing to pay a second time around just have access to them from my phone. I'll try again If they ever add any actual functionality beyond being a fancy e-reader. Until then, it's pen and paper for ya girl.
