It's nice to have a simple RPG to play every once in a while. Easy to play with one hand. You get a good sense of progression and I only did a little bit of grinding for xp or gold. As with many old RPGs, some items were difficult to understand their uses. Also there is quite annoying delays in text after combat, especially if you leveled up.

First off, let me just say the touch controls work perfectly. Played through the whole game and at no point were they a hindrance. The game itself is a fun RPG. Didn't play the NES original so I can't speak to changes or refinements (although I think they may have renamed a few spells). They included a quick save option so you don't have to go back to the king to save every time. Relatively simple and not incredibly long, but a fun game all around (and you can't beat the price).

Game refuses to launch when wifi or mobile is on, and for a while you could make it work by making sure that you were in airplane mode, but now even that doesn't work, giving me a "dq1 connection lost" message when I try. Guess is that the game needs to authenticate itself to the server after a set number of time/launches, and it can't do that if you always play it with wifi off. This makes the game unplayable right now. And here I was thinking of playing through the entire series on mobile... that's a lot of lost money Square.

Great game. The RPG that defined the genre. Everything runs smoothly, in my opinion, better than the Zenithian ports(IV, V, VI). There were bugs during the original release, crashes, glitches but all of those have been patched up. The control scheme, will take a little bit of time to get used to. It took me 5-10 minutes to completely warm up to it. The UI might be a little small for large fingers and you might otherwise touch something you didn't mean to, but take your time. Would recommend. 👍

Classic style turn based rpg. Not classic style... this is THE classic which set the tone for games for years to come. A relatively short game, but a fun journey as if visiting a museum. If you like the genre, you owe it to video games to play this one. No in game guide for the story, so use a walkthrough if you can't figure out where to go. Its cheap and has no ads, and the mobile version has a great autosave feature, so you don't have to return to the king to save like in the original game.

Dragon Warrior for the NES was the first RPG I ever played. It holds a special place in my heart and, while simple compared to modern games, is still fantastic. And the graphical overhaul is amazing. My only complaint is the lack of features one would expect in an updated release. The first is cloud saves. The game is tiny, the safe files are almost nothing, there's no reason I shouldn't be able to play on my phone, quit, and resume on my tablet. The second is a lack of controller support.

This is Dragon Quest 1 in its best form. For those complaining about the controls, it's likely that they haven't noticed you can move your character from anywhere. Swipe up and hold, and you move up. Move your finger down, relative to that and you'll walk down. This is a game PERFECT for phones and optimized for it. And no, there's no controller support for a game that's played in portrait mode where the only actions are tapping and swiping.

A classic! Still fun and challenging after all these years. As basic and simple as JRPGs come, but I find I can play through it over and over again. The graphics are enhanced and the difficulty is toned down, plus it requires much less grinding for levels than the original NES version. The ideal choice for RPG veterans and newcomers alike. 9/10.

I have many fond memories of playing this game on the NES so it's awesome that you can get much of the original experience in a mobile app. First off, this game just works: no ads, no account to set up. You start the game and play from start to finish. The controls have some nice quality of life improvements over the original. The dialogue is in a take middle English style true to the original, and its otherwise a joyfully simple RPG.

Best gaming experience on mobile so far. The game works great on my phone and never crashed once. This was my first Dragon Quest game and it was great for the price. The story and game play is simple but so much fun. This is JRPG at its roots. Try beating it without a guide for the ultimate rewarding feeling. Regardless, be sure to quick save OFTEN! Don't want to lose your progress!

This is one of few games I would actually recommend the mobile version of - there's no complex story to remember, and the game is so mechanically simple you can whiz through grinding sections on a subway and it feels like nothing. Grinding this way makes the game much more manageable, to the point it's the definitive version of DQ1. Sadly, the in-game menus are ugly and the overworld graphics look off in a strange way. Great game, perfect for mobile, but as a port and an app, it could be better.

I've been playing Dragon Warrior since I was a kid on the NES version and the one thing I disliked at that time was all the grinding. In this new version, they've taken care of that. Goldmen give you around 600 ish gold and metal slimes roughly the same in experience. I was able to easily defeat Dragonlord on lv. 18 even while using radiant though the final dungeon. I like the graphics a lot better. Sound is very close to what it was. Great remake.

Great little game. There is a little bit of grinding but being able to play on the bus, train, etc really let's the time fly by. Progression feels good and the art is awesome. Not much of a roleplaying game, but credit has to be given to the impact of this game.

Like for many of you it's easier nowadays to find time to play cell phone games 😐. This was my second Dragon Quest 🐲download, and I decided to take it to where it all began for ol' times sake. It is indeed a quick game compared to the other installments hence the four ⭐ rating, but there are nice upgrades from the NES original: WHAT'S NEW >an orchestral sound, >a coin bank, >Quick saves which makes the trip back to the castle unnecessary. There also wasn't a "puff-puff" offer 🙀 back in the original Dragon Warrior from what I can remember. Unlike what another reviewer said, you DON'T NEED WIFI to play. This is a cheap buy and a good way to break into the series. Stay safe in the real world, fellow dragon warriors.

This is a great old school jrpg which I love. I was very suprised how well this mobile port worked out. Graphically it's the SNES version with the screen extened vertically. The gameplay is the important part and it works great even with one hand. Turn based RPGs tend to work fine with touch controls, in my experience, and the way they worked the touch controls into this game worked out very well. If you love old JRPGs and DQ this is a great way to play DQ1 on the go. I Highly recommend this.

Axe. V. Jun 20, 2019

As with the other mobile DQ ports, I is surprisingly solid. Touch controls suit it very well and rarely gave me issue. However, I can't give it 5 stars as it does suffer from the unfortunate malady of being DQ I. As much as it is a piece of gaming history and should be preserved at all costs, it is also very much a product of its time: dreadfully slow, simple, and cryptic. If you have a lot of patience, or just want to see where this lovely series began, give it a go. Beware of knight aberrant.

Great classic game but if you had time to redo the graphics you had time to speed up the slowness of the game, maybe even add diagonal travel a information recall/log when you gather important information about the story. Some things to really up the original play without taking away from the original. Just a few of my thoughts.

Excellent port of the original Dragon Quest, makes the entire game a much more enjoyable experience. Controls are simplified, grinding doesn't take as long, the multiple save options are a godsend, and everything you need to do is much clearer than the original. This is the best way to play DQ1, it's worth the price!

Overall this is a great port of a classic game. It's on the short side compared to most RPG's but it's also one of the first of the genre. It's a lot of fun with a simple story, and the difficulty is balanced just right. My only real complaint is that the touch controls are slippery which can lead to accidental going back up stairs or into a town (while grinding). Beyond that this is a lot of fun and a classic.

Bru. S. May 30, 2019

Some may think of this game as an historical relic, very important in shaping and setting the standards for every consequent RPG indeed, but largely irrelevant in today's gaming landscape. I strongly disagree. Even today, especially given this mobile version, this game can very much bring enjoyment to even the most casual dragon quest fans. I know it did to me, and up until this game I had never completed one single game in the franchise (much to my regret). Worth every penny!

Nice enjoyable port; a little bit on the easy side, but there are ways to make it more challenging. For instance, the changed game dynamics are such that you can do a weapon-less playthrough; getting the most out of the Seeds you find make this possible. Yes, the Hero's fists can also pierce dragon scales.

This was MY final fantasy, MY Chrono Trigger. I played this game so much as a kid, it felt great to finally come back and finish it. A faithful adaptation, it updated the graphics just enough to make it playable to anyone, without ruining the feel of the original, and the controls ported well to mobile. Have fun.

Nor. M. Aug 11, 2019

Surprisngly strong port. The simplicity of the game allows for excellent controls and an experience significantly more satisfying (and somehow less grindy) than your average mobile game. Great experience at a great price, just don't be afraid to look something up. This game came with a Nintendo Power subscription for a reason. (Keep in mind this uses the Gameboy Color dungeon layouts)

Cryptic and simple but really fun. You have to explore without any idea of what to do until you find the town with magic keys for sale. There are only cryptic hints of what to do next and you have to talk to everyone and piece together what needs done. It's very true to the original NES game, once i accepted that, I came to enjoy the game for what it is.

I loved the original dragon warrior game. This mobile version is similar and adds a lot of quality of life improvements such as saving anywhere any time, adding a bank to store useless items, and a few others. My only complaint is that the game is way easier than the original game was. I easily beat the game at level 19. There is overpowered treasure in all the caves. And gold golems give 650 gold. Certain quest mobs give thousands of xp. Basically little grinding needed and done at level 19

Sve. v. Feb 13, 2022

A fine port of the first dragon quest game. The most basic of RPGs, but its simple nature makes it good for the mobile platform. My biggest complaint is the ugly menus that clash with the original artstyle. At least use a 16bit font, how hard can it be square. You mess this up in every rerelease you do!

Ben. W. Feb 20, 2021

The original console RPG ported to mobile in top shape. Controls modernized and optimized for the platform, and various quality of life enhancements make this the best versiin I've played. The game is quite short and simple by modern standards, but that has always been its charm IMO. Try to avoid using a guide if at all possible! Prove you're the descendant of a legendary hero, gain entry to the villain's lair, save the princess & save the kingdom!
