The app works well and does what it needs. But I'm removing 2 stars for the subpar user experience and lack of convenience features: all episodes have to be downloaded one by one, no possibility of selecting seasons, shows or multiple episodes at once. Also, you have to dig into an episode/movie to download it, you can't do it from the overview page. And in the downloaded videos tab, all videos are listed without grouping them per show or anything.
This is one of my most used apps, because I can watch movies stored on my NAS wherever I go, over the quickconnect. Few details are bugging me though: - when I watch a video over this android app, the progress is not registered in the Video station. - when I'm casting a movie to Chromecast and browse the internets on the phone, the video playback on Chromecast stops whenever some video starts playing (youtube, video ad, instagram story, ... ), it's quite annoying - it messes with volume settings. When I'm casting to chromecast I often can't increase volume on my phone - if I have the app running in background, leave home (my wifi) and then get back, I need to close it first before casting, because I get "Unknown error" otherwise. Despite these issues, I really like this app.
Flawed beyond belief. Doesn't pick up correct codecs once you start playing video, forcing all HDR content to look washed out even though my device (S10+ & Tab S4) supports it. Audio correctly set too. App does create nice metadata, but that's about it. Far better off using a file explorer, picking the correct video and then playing that in an app of your choice like VLC, PLEX etc. This app is terrible and does not live up to the VERY expensive cost of Synology. Shameful.
I don't really understand why it is so slow. It feels like minutes to load folder's content or start playing a movie. In fact it takes seconds, but it is very annoying nowadays. We are no longer in 90s! Plex that is running on the same DS415play is way-way faster & handles more file formats. Otherwise I like the interface of this app & it shows full file names, which is very convenient to navigate my media collection.
Please solve the issue with srt subtitles. This app asks you to open the video in a third party video player of your choice, but the subtitles it grabs with any of those apps are from another movie, stored in the same movies folder. And separating the individual movies in their own subfolder together with their propper srt files doesnt work, because videostation can't find the movie at all. It all works fine when using it together with Chromecast or with the Web interface on a computer.
Works wonderfully. I setup my ds video station though, correctly configured the settings, mapped out where my videos were, customized permissions, and after that, this works wonderfully. Think "Netflix" except you run it. For videos I have the ds video load and play videos through my player pro, but you can also use vlc media player too. Else your at the mercy of the synology Nas and its encoding on the fly processing power.
one of the worst experiences I have ever seen. not only are ur videos sorted wrong on your device, more often they can fail to play when there's nothing wrong with them. they index everything extremely weird, then the station doesn't list things in the same way ur Nas does, then the bloody thing secretly applies its own dumb rules to content that often ruins anything it can get its hands on this is not plug and play, it was not designed by normal humans, u will be screaming at least once
After 3 years, this is still worthless garbage. It plays fro 2 seconds, stalls for 2 seconds. Couldn't be more frustrating. All other apps work fine. 100mb NAS connection and 4G T-mobile tests at 90mb sec. So it's not the network. No setting changes anything. SYNOLOGY - FIX THIS - you can't blame thousands of users.
Needs more permission to download files. Currently the only option for permission is to access media files. This app needs the same permissions as DS File for it to be able to download video to the phone. This needs to be fixed or we might as well remove the download to local storage button.
The Android and Android TV app flat out don't work. "Unknown error". I'm streaming my media using a DS920+, latest os. Trying to stream to Galaxy Note 20 Ultra on Android 11 with April security and Shield TV version 8.2.2. Streaming works on my 2020 Samsung TV and via the web. Very disappointed. [UPDATE] My Shield TV seems to magically start working today. No upgrades. My phone, now updated to the latest May security update, still will not play movies.
Don't know if it's the app or dsm responsible, but for some time it's not been working properly. It plays for about 5 minutes, then payback freezes. If I go back to ds video, and try playing the video again, it says "connection expired". Tried setting connection timeout in DSM security settings to a longer interval as suggested on the forums, to no avail.
Nope didn't work. I have the required NAS operating system (v6+) and video station (v2+). I have multiple movies in multiple different formats and yet this app can't find a thing. FUBAR.
Totally useless. Audio format errors, switch to AC3, video still doesn't play. The player just sits there with a stop button and a pause button, I guess it thinks it's playing?!? Tried 8 movies and couldn't get one to play. Delete. Also, couldn't get Chromecast to work.
While it generally works, the Android mobile version seems to have problems displaying external .srt files. Did not have problems with subtitles when using on Android TV and IOS.
Doesn't cache thumbnails. Has to rebuild the thumbnail list at every single login, which takes like 10-15 minutes, but only by scrolling slowly through the list. Unbelievable. Yes I have a low end NAS but it would be perfectly usable for this if the app cached the thumbnails.
Not great at all. Doesn't support many file types, or audio types. Playback is very laggy, even on my 5G wifi. It doesn't bother me that movie info grabs are sometimes wrong, its play back that's really important. Pleass fix this, it has the potential to be an awesome app.
Won't say it's perfect, but using port forwarding seems much more consistent than quick connect. Had too many issues using this wish QC which is a hit and miss and many times no playback is possible. Port forwarding is much more reliable and quicker
This is an excellent app. One very big thing I would like to see is the ability for the server to hide unused sections on the client. For example: "Home Video." If this was available is would definitely give it a five. It would also be nice to have a search option. 👍
Slow connection and the "Cast to" button only shows up randomly after restarting the app 200-300 times. It can never find any device on my network despite all other apps not having problem. Also if closed without stopping play causes the connected device to relaunch from the next movie/episode etc. regardless how many times you press exit. Clearly very little effort has been put into testing of this app
A mess. Covers and names automatically fetched are way off. Chromecast functionality is worse. Infinite loadings and unsupported audio formats are just a few of the errors i got. That's something you don't want when you re trying to watch a movie.
Auto pausing a video when you're viewing something else sounds like a useful feature but it does it at best at inconvenient times and at worse when there is nothing playing (Pinterest). Please give us the option to turn it off.
Definitely works... for the most part. I cannot do anything else on my phone while Casting (to Chromecast) or the video will stop and only be restarted by exiting the application and relaunching. Great app otherwise. Love my Diskstation.
Tried on a Nexus with Android 6. Surprisingly, this does not play your video, only selects it. Choosing each of the players I was given, each said unable to play the video. VLC was not an option. So, no way to play stuff even though TVs have no problems. Waste of time.
This app is great! It works and it does exactly what it says it does. And the UX is very easy to navigate. I also love the volume and brightness swipe feature. Very clever. I'm surprised that it's not a more common feature. Although, I do wish it played the next video, or asked if you wanted to watch the next video in the queue. That'd be great, but overall, I think this is a great app! 5/5!
Became slower and slower each update, it hardly loads any thumbnails anymore, when refreshing it says operation failed. It used to work great in the past now its so slow I refrain from using it as going to the imdb website to find info and details in the same lists is an even faster method now, strangely enough.
The music one can see mp3 files in folders, this thing, it can't seat anything (mp4 files) in the video folder, in fact it can't find any folders. I'm not at all clear how it is supposed to work. Nothing intuitive about it. I expected something as simple as a dnla (dlna?) connection. Good luck with that
Beautiful app, but it seems to be impossible to download a video without transcoding it first, even when transcoding is disabled in the settings. That seems like a basic feature, and the app is already able to play the video files without transcoding them, so I don't understand why this feature isn't available... It is also impossible to download several episodes of a TV show at once.
