Great app, the animations (SVG made I guess) are absolutely insane and pleasing. I still have some troubles with some ads that doesn't want to close when finished, forcing me to restart the app (and losing extra life for example). Maybe this is something to fix, I know you want people to purchase the premium part, but they need to have a great experience with or without it. Other than that, really cool application, congrats to the team !
I rarely comment on apps. But I have to say I really like duolingo. You learn and have fun at the same time. The only issue I have with it is the competition vibe. My main goal is just to become fluent in any language I wanna learn. But as a competitive person I sometimes get lost into the "finish first" vibe and rush instead of really learning. So is it possible to choose if either you want to participate to the weekly board or not? Because sometimes it's more stressful than it should be. 🙁
Fabulous app! I started in January 22 to learn Chinese and been addicted since. Had to get Duolingo Plus as I wanted to learn fast. But for 7 euros a month it's definitely worth it. I also subscribed to the English courses for my 9 years old twins. It's a fun way for them to improve their English. I wish there were different leaderbords for each language one subscribes to. Currently, you end up in one leaderbord that includes the score you've achieve each week...Great app though, thank you.
I like it alot ! The characters and the possibility to add your friends make learning sessions way better. However, there should be an option for when you come back after a very long time to 'check' on your remaining skills to keep following the courses
Pushes you to keep learning. It has understood how learning works best (scientifically speaking) and does its part on motivation, all contrary to traditional courses and school. So, amazing! Just lack a bit of content in some areas for french user for example but it is understandable.
Excellent app for focused learning. It's easy to use and designed to motivate continued learning. On the downside, some of the content is not suitable for younger learners as it concerns alternative lifestyles. Also the app does occasionally freeze; the ads are far too frequent, loud and annoyingly repetitive, and the functionality is different depending on which mobile device is being used rather than consistent.
I get the point of wanting people to pay. I've been here for years. It started off so well and then the last few years they got really money grabby imo. I remember it being free with maybe an occasional ad. Now I have lot's of ads which I'm totally fine with. However, messing up 5 times and not being able to complete even 1 lesson defeats the enter purpose of learning newer content in a language! This kills progression and makes learning all the more difficult.
Duolingo seems very repetitious in the beginning but gives you a good foundation for what's ahead. Later it sometimes includes a new word with no introduction but soon it surprisingly is made clear. This gives you the joy of discovery! It's so much fun! Before I started Duolingo, I had been struggling to learn Spanish but this method changed that. It's very effective, quick, and fun! I'm grateful to have found it!
I am learning and it's not boring. It is real easy to make stupid mistakes, which I have done, but they will ask the same question again at the end to help you get it right. Bit off more than I could chew adding Korean, just sticking to French and Russian. There's tips for French before the lessons, but none for Russian. I don't mind; it's difficult and explanations can confuse more. You can go over finished lessons to stay fresh, but unstudied items are inserted sometimes, don't like that.
The course is full of mistakes and inconsistent translations, which interfere with the learning experience. The developers ignore reports of errors, even if reported by multiple users. Apparently the errors in the course are not corrected in order to force you to purchase a subscription (you have a limited amount of "free" mistakes). Still, overall a useful app but seems more like a beta.
Kinda like it. I have used it for 18 months. I catch new words/sentences quickly and this is very repetitive and gets redundant. Probably useful for some. Occasionally it offers to jump a level. Some sentences/contents go against my beliefs and I would rather not translate them... I wish it was "cleaner" that way. Also a wider vocabulary would be nice. I would like more teachings, a grammar lesson every level instead of 1/group of lessons. I have started to use other app in addition to this.
Good for reviewing a language you have already learned in other classes, but not super helpful in learning new material. Ads have a lot of problems with being glitchy, and in languages other than Spanish, it is common for correct answers to be marked wrong. That causes a lot of problems, because in the free version you have limited lives and can run out when it isn't your fault
While I like the sentiment, this app does need work. This is only my opinion, but I wish there would be more common ground between the language courses, and work on making tips and stories available for all languages. It would also be great if they would teach the most practical grammar and vocab, both by adapting to each language and making believable sentences.
I'm enjoying the app. I don't expect to be fluent but I would like to get by easily when I travel. The lessons progress well and the repetition helps the memorization. I am better at picking up why sentences are strung a certain way than I did in class. I'm on day 40 and going strong.
This app is aesthetically beautiful. I can sense the effort placed in fine tuning all the colorings, animation and sound effects to target the brain's reward system and maximize fun and engagement. I also like the app's strategy for business. The free version is great on its own and the ads are beautifully integrated with the flow. I believe I might go with plus after sometime. However, the plus seems not that worth it given the price tag associated with it.
Fun and I'm learning already, even though I had taken Spanish in college, I was able to take a test and catch up to a place I needed work in. I haven't started paying for it yet, I wanted to see how long I could stick with it first. On that note, the ads are getting a little obnoxious. Edit: there is one ad that keeps glitching out the app and I have to close it. Please remove that ad! I don't mind the ads but I have to restart the whole app every time it comes up.
So many languages and capabilities for free! Definitely worth downloading. Most sentences are usable but some are a little absurd. Also sentences are sometimes marked as incorrect when according to native speakers (in the community) they are correct. This happens very rarely but it is annoying. However, this needs to be put in context as I have been using the app happily enough for 5years.
The gamification is on point, duolingo makes learning a language a very fun experience. While I understand the business model, I still find the ads to be a bit much. If you really must keep the amount of ads there the user should at least have a few more hearts. It makes no sense to me why the tips are not available for the russian language in the app, yet are for other languages. The crashes the app experiences after some ads are also annoying. I would say more but the text space is too short.
There are fewer bugs in the app now, but on Android you still get far more XP than on iOS. This is exacerbated even more by the purple practice lessons. Just to stay in your league, you're really pressured hard to take them. But they get boring and offer no course progress. After a full year now, I want to be able to fully finish my course, but the way the app works really discourages that. It's so bad now that I intentionally don't take classes on Mondays just to get an easier league.
It's a great app for learning a new language, at least the basics. But unless you pay, you will come to a plateau in learning. And recently, they started putting ads in-between every lesson, which makes the ads extremely annoying. Especially when you progress and can do one lesson in 1:30 minutes. Other than that, I enjoy it. Would get 5 stars if they got rid of the ads, or at least made them less frequent.
I am paying for the premium app, but I don't think it's worth the price. The course is too short and has numerous errors. It seems poorly thrown together with no one left on the project to fix first draft mistakes. For example, some questions have no audio and others have been repeatedly reported as wrong, but never fixed though this language was launched years ago. It's disappointing and puzzling for things that would be easy fixes. Poor quality and expensive. Not worth the price.
Good supplement for training your ear to the sounds of a language, a bit repetitive in content with no grammar explanation. Love the less common language choices. Ads are annoying, worth paying for the app if you are serious about using it. It does have a few minor bugs with the input of answers. I really hate the competition aspect but I guess some might find it motivating.
This is only the end of week two, but I Duolingo has kept my interest and enthusiasm going through the most basic (and usually boring) stages of acquiring a new language because of the targets and 'awards' as well as through the use of different characters to vary the necessary repetition. I'm hoping to keep the momentum going until I reach at least an intermediate level in my chosen language.
They do a good job giving people multiple ways of learning. The repetition can be annoying but it really helps make sure you're well rounded. The comments on every question really help give context too. The ads can be annoying, but overall they're pretty unobtrusive considering it's a free product. The leader board really helps keep me wanting to learn, if only to win. XD
the continue button (icon?) covers instructions, the exercise where the choices are in little circles aren't centered so you can't see them, some exercises the words you are supposed to select as a choice for what you hear are below the edge of the screen so you can't select them. when the exercise works, they work great. unfortunately about a quarter of the time you can't access the correct answer or it isn't visible on the screen. too bad, it looks pretty good otherwise
in 2019, this app was perfect! HOWEVER, each update the last 2 years has diminished functionality in the app to zero. it started with not having voice lessons anymore. like, my favorite thing about duo was that i could have something telling me if I'm pronouncing a word correct. no other apps had that. well that's no longer functional. for the last year+ my app hasn't worked AT ALL. first it wouldn't start any lessons, now it is just a blank screen that never changes. Duo please fix this!
Good app, I really want to go back everyday to improve. Maybe a little too competitive. Also i think most exercises are not hard enough, i would like to have less sounds too. And final thing is that there is no exercise to try and write in the language or write sentences.
