Echo Meter Touch Bat Detector, Recorder & Analyzer

Using the Echo Meter Touch 2 plug-in modules, available from www.wildlifeacoustics.com, Amazon, or through distributors worldwide, this app allows you to listen to, record, and automatically identify bats by their ultrasonic echolocation calls. The modules and this companion app reveal the silent and often times invisible world of bats, providing outdoor enthusiasts, citizen scientists, and researchers an affordable and informative way to interact with these important creatures.

There are two models available: Echo Meter Touch 2 (EMT2) costs $179 and is intended for nature enthusiasts and batting hobbyists and Echo Meter Touch 2 Pro costs $349 and is designed for bat professionals and features a higher quality microphone, adjustable gain, and higher sample rate.

The Echo Meter Touch Ultrasonic Modules sense ultrasonic signals, digitize the signal, and transmit the ultrasonic data to your the app on your Android device. The EMT2 offers exclusive features and unprecedented ease-of-use for a handheld bat detector.

LISTEN TO BAT’S ECHOLOCATIONS
EMT2 translates bat echolocations into frequencies that are audible to humans using two technologies. Wildlife Acoustics’ patented Real Time Expansion (RTE) allows you to listen to bats in real time with unparalleled fidelity. RTE maintains the timing and tonality of the original echolocations. Heterodyne (HET) listening via manual and automatic tuning is also available, for those accustomed to that way of hearing bats.

VIEW THE ECHOLOCATIONS ON A SPECTROGRAM
A real-time spectrogram shows the frequencies and timing of the echolocations. Scroll back in time and zoom in on previous "bat passes."

SEE MOST LIKELY BAT SPECIES IN REAL-TIME***
The Auto ID feature analyzes the echolocation calls and suggests the two most likely bat species matches in real time. This is the same technology used in our professional Kaleidoscope Pro Bat Auto Identification software. Currently, the app can identify 26 species in North America, 25 in Europe and 57 in the neotropics. For more information on Kaleidoscope and a full list of species, visit our website.

RECORD .WAV FILES
Activate triggered recording mode to automatically save bat passes to full spectrum .wav files for analysis on a computer or to view on your Android device. Or use manual record mode to control start and stop of recording. View the recording spectrogram and add voice or text notes. Listen to the recording using RTE, HET, or traditional Time Expansion Playback (playback at fractional speed to make the ultrasound audible).

SEE YOUR PATH AND RECORDING LOCATIONS
View in satellite or road map view. View identified species codes directly on the map. Go to the recording's spectrogram from the map view. Transfer to your computer to view in Google Earth. Your Android device must have GPS capability or you must use a Bluetooth GPS receiver for this functionality.
*Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.*

TRANSFER RECORDINGS TO YOUR COMPUTER
The EMT2 can transfer the .wav recordings to your computer over a Wi-Fi network or cabled through iTunes. Using Wi-Fi, the app bundles the recordings in a .zip folder and allows download by entering a URL in any web browser.

SHARE RECORDINGS VIA EMAIL OR MMS MESSAGING
And import and open files that have been shared with you.

***Because bats vary their echolocation calls in response to a wide variety of needs, no automated identification can achieve 100% accuracy in species identification. Auto-ID, though largely accurate, should not be relied on as a basis for scientific research. Auto-ID is intended for use in analyzing recordings of single bats in free flight in low clutter environments. Auto-ID will not work well on recordings of roost emergence, multiple or captive bats, bats in high clutter environments, or bat social calls. Auto-ID does not include every possible bat for each of the covered regions.

I'm still learning, but don't find the online user guide to be very intuitive. For example, it tells me to tap an icon, but there's no icon where it says. Eventually, I find the icon, either in a different place or a different window. I think the problem is that it's not very linear. When I'm using the echo-meter, I need something pretty straight- forward. Later i can read more in-depth. So I guess I would like a separate 1,2,3 outline. But, that aside, I'm loving it! And still learning it

New update gets stuck in folder update every time you open it, even though I have processed it loads of times no way to stop it. Really annoying. Also seems more prone to crashing since newest update. Almost unusable. Does not work on Realme phone with Snapdragon 730g

Brand new sensor not recognized anymore. It used to work recently and still works for newer mobile with USB-C adapter My old mobile is on the compatible list

Not intuitive, have to read the useful manual. A rough idea of direction of the sound origin would be good as all to often there's a identification but no bat visible even in good evening light. Overall it's an excellent app and device (although for the price the adapter needs to be included where necessary).

After several updates, it's working great again!

I bought the hardware during the winter and downloaded the software then too but only now getting around to trying it out.. I was surprised when I realized my hardware does not have the "c" connector required by my Galaxy. So I bought a "C" to "micro USB" adapter and while there is a physical connection, the software can't recognize the mic. So I decided I'd download the program again to my old Galaxy phone and try it without the adapter but I can't find the software in google home. The software shows up when I open APP on my computer and tells me I've already downloaded it. BUT I can't see the APP on Google Home on my old phone so can't even download to try it there. I guess I'll try my tablet next.

Edited. Sent the Echo Meter Touch 2 Pro back, as it kept crashing on my Samsung Galaxy note 10+, despite it being compatible. Wildlife Acoustics didn't have the time to look into why, as they are, apparently, working on a new update for the app. Purchased a professional bat detector from Elekon

I want to love this detector & app as it is such a good idea. But having bought several adapters and tried the module on 5 different Android phones, I cannot get it to work and now have a very useless and very expensive gadget in a drawer. I'm sorry to have to write a negative review but this is ridiculous.

Updated.. After around a year and half of use (which has been with few problems) I am now experiencing lots of bugs. Sonogram sometimes lags, crashing unexpectedly, and really noticing battery draining more than it used to.

This us a great bit of kit and app. But I have had trouble with no/low volume and getting the right USB adapter for my pixel 2 phone. Otherwise there is nothing else close to this on the market currently.

I upgraded to the pixel 6 last week and now my sensor appears to be useless. My new phone will not recognize the sensor. I'm so disappointed, I was really looking forward to using this on my trip to Texas, and now an almost $200 device is just going to collect dust.

Still learning. It may be 5 star by the time I've mastered it. Really helps identification. I'd like to be able to turn volume up more, but that is pro ably the limitation of my phone.

I'm no bat expert, just someone who is interested to identify the bats flying near my house. This app (plus the Echo Meter Touch 2) certainly works! It's a sophisticated app and it does take a bit of learning how to use it. But very worthwhile.

Doesn't work on ASUS zen pad, Xiaiomi mi6 or Xiaomi mi8. For the price of the device the software and hardware should be more adaptable with a greater range of devices included. Works on Samsung S7, however this is a poor choice compared the the previously mentioned,

Dav. H. Sep 24, 2019

Spent hundreds of pounds on the actual detector which won't work with any android devices in the house. It just keeps saying to connect device even when it is connected.

Brilliant. Would like to be able to plot data by time so that comparisons could be made for different days and patterns may emerge.

Steep learning curve but then easy to use. Great fun, simple bat detection and identification. Shame the English market is still being charged considerably more than American

Ali. D. Jun 14, 2021

Easy to use, probably not used all its features yet. Sound os good- soon learn to recognize them without looking at the screen

NIC. D. Oct 12, 2020

Very impressive app but does stop transmitting sound sometime when in live mode just stop & restarting shorts it.In Gps map mode not all icons on map will open to go to listening mode.

Fantastic! I've spent years bat detecting and never got round to actually I'd'ing the bat's. This does it in real time. With GPS data... So good!
