For an app claiming to make things easier, it sure makes things difficult. Full requirement list: set up auto pay, have the phone in your car while driving. And yet, it constantly forgets who I am, forgets or declines my credit card (without merit), or simply doesn't work and I get mailed a bill by the state. Needs a lot of work.
I don't normally write a review, but I feel compelled to do so to warn others who are planning to rent a car in Texas and rely on the EZ TAG Express app to avoid paying the convenience fee charged by rental car agencies. A few weeks ago, I rented a car with Budget and immediately registered and activated that rental vehicle's tag in my EZ TAG Express app, which I had set up a couple months earlier, and set it to expire at a date/time that coincided with the vehicle's return. Despite doing everything correctly and having an ample balance that never had to be refreshed, I received inconsistent results. I was charged for four tolls by the app, and I was charged for nine tolls (plus the convenience fee) by Budget. None of the tolls overlapped. (I was driving through Dallas/Denton/Ft. Worth/Austin. I have to presume that the app works in all these areas since the website claims it works "throughout Texas", although this would have been a good question to ask.) After speaking with both a representative and a team lead from the HCTRA, the only conclusion that could be drawn is that the software used by the HCTRA is poorly written. Essentially, when there is a conflict between an app user and a tag that is already registered with a rental agency, sometimes the software system will bill the app ... and sometimes it will bill the rental agency. (There was no discernible EZ TAG sticker - which is different from the Express app - on the windshield of the vehicle.) From a user's perspective, this non-deterministic (i.e., unpredictable) behavior is unacceptable. Granted, I can file documentation with Budget and they will waive the convenience fees, but this is not an ideal scenario and causes me to lose time and productivity. On a side note, if you don't mind waiting on hold for a very long period of time to connect with one of the pleasant folks at EZ TAG Express, they will email you documentation. Alternatively, I could just have used screenshots from the app. Regardless, it's still a pain to file a request for a credit with the rental agency and then wait who knows how long for a refund. That said, if EZ TAG Express had picked up zero charges (instead of four), then based on Budget's policy, I could not ask for a refund, and that would force me to appeal the matter up the chain of command, so to speak. Anyway, I realize this is a long review, but hopefully it will prompt the folks at HCTRA to fix the problem, rather than kick the bucket down the road and suggest that the customer ask for a credit from the rental agency. I noticed that HCTRA seems to read reviews and even respond, and so I will be curious whether the response will be one that is thought out, or just a canned response directing me to a website. :) On one last note, I just now ordered a physical EZ TAG (which is different from the app), and we'll see if this has different results in the future, although I inferred from my conversation with HCTRA that it may not. (I've rented vehicles in Illinois/Indiana and in Florida and never experienced this issue after purchasing a physical tag from those respective toll authorities.)
A necessity for rental cars in Houston, however, the app doesn't work. Constant glitches and errors. Have to call customer service everytime to manually add a rental car since the app doesn't work. Very frustrating. Have a Samsung S21 Ultra.
When I log in the app it says session expired & logs me right back out. If I try to log back in it locks my acct for 1 hr. I had it set for biometrics log in but that stopped working. I have to constantly keep trying & 1 of the many tries I'll finally get in.
You can use it in Harris County but data sync in pdf or other format still not available. it does says create pdf but it doesn't work. the only way you can see the history of tolls in App only, you cannot use web browser if you signed up for app. so they must need to fix create pdf icon or you will not be able to save the records if you needed to re check when you get violation tickets for tolls..
App is nice and convenient but Harris County needs to find a way to work on the real time accounting system for the app. There should be a real time notification for the remaining balance or at least a daily or weekly reminder for your total balance. This will better help customers keep track of their tolls so that they don't get hit with an unexpected charge for refill of the account. Please get with your app developers to remedy this problem as it is very annoying and frustrating.
Very easy to use, and perfect for me because I only travel on toll roads once in a while. It is so nice to be able to go through the EZ Tag lane in whatever car I am traveling in. If I know I am going to travel on a toll road, I just open the app, activate whichever vehicle I am traveling in, and go! This is great for people who don't travel on toll roads enough to get an EZ Tag, like me. I hope this app is here to stay!
Complete garbage app!! "Services offline, try again later" constantly. Try to generate PDF of transactions, states "No PDF reader installed" when i have and use one regularly. Filter Dates for tolls, only generates when toll was Posted to account, not by Transaction date. WTH this is almost useless to help claim for business toll reimbursement.
Well first off I just learned EZTag and EZTag Express are not the same thing. EzTag can be used out of state but Express can not. I'm not sure the difference but I got fines in OK and KS. And system wise the fingerprint recognition system only worked half the time and I would still have to put in my password.
Does not work on all Texas toll roads as advertised(did not work in Dallas). Paid hundreds of dollars in fines to rental car company because this app did not work. Customer service takes weeks to reply back to emails and unhelpful Edit: yep, did have the license plate active during the whole time
Easy to set up, use, maintain & to switch vehicles it is associated with. I do not like that you have to pay higher rates than with the physical tag. This app has been down a few times as well.
this is pretty cool but I'm an out of towner and one of the nice Ez Tag representatives told me about this app. you need faster readings on the license plate readers. So a ticket can avoid being mailed when I have money in the account.Now I'm out of $40 bucks it's just sitting here in the app. You need to have an option of loading $5 ,$10, $15,$20 etc. Instead of 40$ I didn't do $40 worth of tolls I only came because Barry posed a threat too my state.
Can't log in. Tried a couple of times until I got an email saying I was looked out for an hour. After the hour tried again still would say password was wrong. Signed in on the website and it worked. Uninstalling!
ALWAYS have issues with this app. If your card expires or you get a new one, it won't let you update the info. Then when it says you can't update because you have toll violations and you go to pay, the website says you have no violations.
This app is a perfect representation of Harris county and the city of Houston infrastructure. If you've ever driven on any major thoroughfare in the area that experience is equal to the experience you will have using this app.
Easy set up with Android. I have had this app for years. When you buy a new vehicle you usually have to call in the new license plate if you have a fine due.
Tells me it cant find my account. Also, eztag website is BROKEN... Keeps asking to update email address and provides the following error: "We are unable to process your request at this time. -General-Exception" ...... This is when trying to do anything with the account.. STAY AWAY. Use TX Tags or some one else. Lastly, when calling in for support, one of the ladies asked for Social Security number along with personal info. These type of questions should have never been asked!!!!! Asked her why and she got hostile. I said I would call back later.
I just downloaded the app and tried to log in but it keeps logging me out. I'm trying to pre-pay with my c.c. but logs me out. Now it suspended my account for 1 hr because I tried too many times.
I think that when it requests a minimum 6 and 8 alpha-numeric username and password, respectively, and you give it 9 and 11, it should recognize and accept both! Uninstalled it immediately!
Uninstalled. Keep attempting to log in, but says I don't have an account, but then I have no issues logging in through the website. Very inconvenient.
ascam ,wouldn't let me register after I put my payment method in. It just charge me. a expensive mistake. Now they saying contact support, I don't need support, I need my sixty dollars back. I'm not near any toll roads anymore. I seriously doubt I get a refund because it's ascam. I don't need help , I need a refund. Will you give me a refund? Stole my money still haven't got my refund or get what I paid for .Crooks.
A quick and easy way for people visiting the Houston area to utilize the EZ Tag lanes around town. And they fixed the PDF bug!
Installed the app. After one year I get invoice for $1300+... Whaat??! Customer service refused to help. Run when you can. Useless app.
The EZ Tag Express website AND app don't work!!! What is up with that? Three different apps (tag, express, bandpass) make for a tangled, confusing mess!!!
Just downloaded this app and says there is an error try again later. I've had the same problem a few months ago. Oh well, guess I'll uninstall, again!😠
Been trying to close my express account sinces I already have a tag in my truck but when I log in it logs me back out. I already call and email ez tag and they have not been able to solve my problem.
Worked as expected and saved me from having to deal with PlatePass through the car rental company. Perfect app to use when renting a car in TX!
Never lets me log in. I always have to change password and then still sometimes it won't let me log in. Saying my information is wrong. Need to update my payment
Wouldn't let me update....tried to redownload and won't even let me do that...don't know balance...can't access nothing. tried online and it referred me to the app....very frustrating
Pretty tricky rules can really cost money. First, the app is only initially valid for seven days. You must change it to use beyond. Any driving beyond will result in a ticket. Second, a major Houston toll road (Grand Parkway and maybe others) is not included. If you make a mistake, you get a ticket. Third, Minimum payment of $40 and will automatically refresh at that level when you get to $10. They don't tell you about that in advance and they do not mention refunds if you cancel your account. Fourth, they charge you as if you are paying cash. No EZ tag discount. I only hope it works beyond that.
