A lot to like but fundamentally broken. Seemingly random spikes in location tracking make it unusable. This is a known problem but none of the recommended solutions work. I've tried most of the competing apps and this is the only one with that tracking issue. I opened a ticket and waited two weeks but no reply from them so no choice but to un-install. It's a shame because aside from the tracking problem it was my favorite out of all the ones that I tried.

I've been using Gaia for almost 5 years and I've found it to be the best outdoor adventurous mapping app in my opinion. For awhile after a Gaia or Android update, unsure which one, I had an issue with the position arrow lagging badly on both phone and tablet at the same time but was able to resolve that problem recently by factory restoring my Samsung S7 phone and my Samsung 10.1 tablet. I love having layers and the ability to make them transparent on top other maps to view both at same time.

An excellent pairing to your standard natgeo overland map. Update April 30, 2022. I originally paid for a membership in 2017, and have since had numerous issues with access to premium features. Access to these features was made available to me with my 2017 membership, but now seems to be locked behind yearly payments. This seems a poor way to treat long time customers.

The free version works well. DO NOT purchase the premium version. The private property layer (the reason why I purchased the premium version) does not work. If I clear the app data it works again but when I re-launch the app it stops working. The only properties I can see are ones far away from me which makes it pointless to have. The free version is 5 star worthy but do not spend money on this app!

Of all the gps apps I've downloaded this one is the best. I've used it for back country and mountaineering. Gives topographic data, tracks very well, maps that I've used so far have all been accurate. I will say it drains my battery pretty quick when recording. But it's still far better than the half dozen apps I tried before Gaia.

Great start BUT... Local maps unreliable. If cell signal weak, LOCAL maps won't load. Need airplane mode. Many local maps incomplete. No way to force reliable load. New version harder to choose which map to view. Roads and trails disappear upon zoom out. Good idea for cities but really sucks for remote areas where things won't get too busy for zooming out. Can't navigate when roads and trails disappear. Garmin had a setting for how much detail we want and not what the marketing forces on us Update: Response to response - Yes, I did the baby steps. Doesn't work. Didn't help.

This, for sure, is one of the best trail navigation apps for Android (probably for iOS too), and they keep improving it. Great maps, most accurate and extensive place names of all similar apps, good tracking, etc., etc. It is a complex app with many functions, so expect to struggle with some "learning curve" to get the hang of all the possibilities, but it's definitely worth taking your time. YouTube is a good source of helpful instructional videos.

Overall a really good gps and navigation platform... But some obvious and basic errors and deficiencies. You can't control the colour (blue) or size (too large) of icons, have limited control of folders, and no control over which of two overlapping objects are visible. Most distressing, you can't edit the points of an imported track at all (truly foundational!) These were standard on all cartographic platforms in the 90s, so it's sad to see them missing from an otherwise excellent platform.

Installed on my Android tablet. Doesn't work. All I get for a map is a black screen. Uninstalled and reinstalled again. Still doesn't work. Uninstalling permanently now. Edit... After being asked to contact customer support, I did. They've ignored my request for help. Very unprofessional. At least this works on my phone. Guess I have to suffer with the tiny screen until I find another app.

Disappears your data, layers, settings, and subscription if you attempt to use both the mobile and web versions of the service. No support. Works great until you login and loose all your premium access and setup. Was preparing for a week of hiking, now realize that this app cannot be trusted. So glad I didn't get burned by this while out in the field. Will be cancelling my premium subscription as soon as I am done typing this.

Great app. I use it to find new adventures. The different map options are almost too much choice. This app ties in with Android Auto now, so I don't need to mount a tablet on my dashboard. Remember to record your track when you start on the trail! This gets me out of trouble all the time. Love it!

Very accurate maps showing all the little paths! Have used it in many different countries in Europe, north america and south America. Great to be able to create my trail then download the map around it on my phone as I am often without internet when travelling.

An updated review after using Gaia for 6 years. Upgrades and layers - best GPS out there. Beats onX in every aspect - price, features, layers, user friendly, all States and International maps, no add on fees, and reasonable premium price is all inclusive, with continual updates and new features and layers. Private land and public land layers, fire burn history, precipitation layer, cell coverage, incline layer and more. Gaia has it all covered! Never had any issues like others.

A little bit overwhelming at first but after plotting my first couple of trips and playing around with the app, it's super intuitive and easy. I recommend you use a third party service like Trails Off-road to get the most of Gaia.

Tes. T. May 20, 2022

Great app for finding roads and trails off the beaten path. Perfect when we want to get away from it all. Different layers of maps to apply based on our chosen adventure.

I lay out a route then it loses pieces of the route and gets the mileage wrong. Takes a long time to load saved data. App has a long way to go. Paid good money for it. Lots of bugs.

I really want to like this app but the saved tracks and waypoints functionality is just fundamentally broken, making it untenable for my use. I can't spend yet again two to three hours trying to set up again what seems to randomly break, which has happened for the third time now. Unfortunately, another app will have to be the one I end up using because this one is just too broken. 1. Online bulk importing which just hangs/fails because it can't handle somewhere over about 70'ish at a time. This constant issue seems to be years old by others' comments online though I can't confirm myself. Support was unable to commit to resolving this issue, ever. 2. Imported tracks/waypoints which seem to relocate on their own to other saved folders. I considered that it might be me doing this but it just happened again and I know I didn't do it this time, and I'm pretty convinced I didn't do it the previous times either. 3. Hidden tracks/waypoints being shown even though they're set to hidden. I've reported it and support seems interested in figuring it out but it's still open at this point.

I purchased premium for the older topo maps, but they don't overlay the base map properly. It's off by about 750 ft. North-South and 750 ft. East-West. There doesn't seem to be a way to slide the overlay to match correctly, making it difficult to pinpoint locations. Please please please address this. I can't give this a higher rating if it doesn't accurately show me what I paid to see.

Hands down one of the best backcountry map apps I have used. Easy, simple, loaded with content, no ads, minimal power drain. Completed the jaun de fuca, west coast trail, three brothers, banff/ jasper treks and numerous day hikes. Never an issue. Have recommend to friends/ family

Right now I'm giving only one star because this app can't even give me the right street names in the town I live in. How can I trust this app to be accurate about areas I've never been to when it's not accurate about the areas I already know? I've contacted the developer, let's see if I get any useful info from them. So far I can't find a way to give them updated info so they can correct their maps. If there's a way I'd love to learn it.

Overall I love this app, my ipad I use while out exploring works effortlessly, on my Android phone I use on occasion is another story. I've had the app for a year or so now and the last 6months my Android would not sync with the Gaia cloud, so I uninstalled it and now I can't even log into the app on my Android phone....kind of sucks majorly, other than that the app is great *UPDATE love Gaia, also had onx for a year barely used it, Gaia for me is easy to use and seems pretty staright forward

Mar. M. May 26, 2022

Doesn't download maps for offline viewing. The app says it is, but it just shows the download arrow for hours. It's a terrible app that only works half the time.

Sam. T. Apr 18, 2022

Properly working map app with some advanced features. It includes also few very useful gadgets, i.e. compass display together with the map or dark theme. Gaia GPS works properly in the wilderness despite poor mobile network coverage (this was a serious issue for other map apps I had installed on my cell phone).

Mic. M. Apr 20, 2022

I've used this app on several occasions and 98% of the time it's spot on. No more riding through trails wondering where I am or which way to head out! It makes trail adventures much less stressful.👍🏻

Jun. H. May 18, 2022

Pretty good. Still has issues. e.g. map keys aren't offline so are unavailable in the back country unless you take screen shots and file them.

Bri. E. Dec 29, 2021

It's easy to accidentally download two large an area for maps. If you do this the app will download the area but only patchly. As I went really ham when I first started I found the best way to fix this was to uninstall the app and log in through my web browser and delete all of the downloaded maps and saved maps and waypoints there. Then reinstall the app. And that seems to fix the issue for me. However it shouldn't be possible for this issue to happen!

Excellent app for creating routes. I use it primarily for planning motorcycle rides. User friendly interface and easy to use across devices. Also has an option to track your route to find places again when exploring. Easy to download or share routes as well. If you are looking for the best route to a location, stick with Google maps. If you want to create, track, or share your own route, this is a great app to use.

C.P. E. Feb 6, 2022

Best GPS utility, and the only one you need. I use Gaia on every outing to record, and even to plan entire routes. Not only is it one of the most accurate, but it shows all the trails the other apps don't. Add on to that the modest cost model allowing you to save maps offline, and even use 'snap to trail' to get a read on distance / elevation, even while offline makes this is a superstar.

Can no longer change color of any of my saved tracks? ~ Thanks for the reply, found it, but I would've never guessed it was hidden on the track icon, I may have found it by mistake one day, you really should add a change color option as well, like in the expanded list of options after you click on the track name under saved tracks.

Love the map overlays that are available, like that maps get updated frequently with new trails, and like the amount of enlargement available to see locations. The app has been shutting down recently while I was using it an airplane mode on hikes and even at home while not in the airplane mode just trying to turn it on and look at different areas. I just did an update. Hope this fixes it.
