Hive is a great board game and this is a great way to try the game. Unfortunately this app has some problems. There's very few and simple puzzles. No computer player and nobody plays the online multiplayer. The selection buttons for the additional pieces don't seem to work. I'd also like to have seen an option to toggle the move legality visualization. Overall a decent app but could use some improvements.
Have the free app...not sure there are actually any in-app purchases. Opening the rules in multiplayer breaks the game. Have to restart to get it working again. Multiplayer chat essentially breaks the game. Hard to find anyone to play multiplayer with, probably because nobody wants to use a poorly executed app. Tested on galaxy s6
Been waiting for a long time for a port of Hive to Android, and this almost fits the bill. No AI, which is supremely unfortunate. The multiplayer is fine if you can find an opponent. Screen controls are a little wonky. I don't know that I'd pay for an app of this quality... Needs work.
Very nice art and a great interface. Add a decent AI and the Pillbug and I would pay top dollar for this app. Until then, please add more puzzles and more challenging puzzles. I love the tabletop version of this and would love to have a challenging AI game in my pocket. I would play nothing else. Please turn this app into the game Hive deserves to be. I would like to purchase the ladybug and mosquito but there appears to be no way to allow me to upgrade.
There are more bugs in here than the bloody amazon rainforest. Vanishing tiles and impossible layouts in the 2 player mode. Zooming in the puzzles and no way to unselect a peice if its been picked up in error. Badly needs a complete overhaul to showcase a good game.
I downloaded this after playing and enjoying the original game. Unfortunately it's missing quite a lot of features. The most notable of these is a decent single player. The closest you get is a puzzle mode. This wouldn't be too bad if the multiplayer was good; however I couldn't find any opponents to play against. Another issues is the amount of bugs and glitches I encountered, particularly when moving pieces or zooming the screen. I wouldn't recommend getting this game.
Great game, but the app is a little buggy. Still playable though. Zooming is a little glitchy and I was seeing tiles disappearing in puzzle mode. It can't seem to connect to the network. I thought there was a bug in level 2 of puzzle mode, but I was doing an invalid move. You cannot move your ant next to your queen because you've surrounded your queen and lost. The AI continues anyway and makes a seemingly illegal move.
It looks great, and I had such hopes, even for the puzzle pay instead of versus an AI. But there is a glitch in the second puzzle for me, and I can't get past it, so that is useless. I gave my seven year old nephew the actual game for his birthday a few weeks ago, and he loves it. I got this app, and tried to play a game with him, but it kept doing the tile way off in limbo, and we kept having to zoom out to see it sitting far off the field. Then it would not permit legal moves, and we finally gave up.
Pun intended or intended, I'm not sure. Seriously, I have the board game and I love it. This just has some dull puzzles, lots of bugs, a multiplayer mode with apparently 0 players. It needs remaking almost completely, starting with a compelling single player mode. Hive is on ios and board game arena on the web and both implementations are a hundred times better than this
Love this game. Hot seat mode works great but needs an undo button for frequent accidental drops. Puzzle mode was sort and easy. Not bad. Like everyone else, can't get online to work, and should use notifications. Will raise score when either or both suggestions are implemented
There's no AI and the multiplayer crap doesn't even work. The puzzle mode is fun for 2 minutes, then it is over. The only thing usable is Hot Seat, but if I'm sitting right next to someone, we can just play the board game.
The interface looks good, but it doesn't work well. The zoom controls are unreliable, it won't scroll while you're carrying a piece, and it often forces you to make a move you didn't want by dropping off your piece for you. Not to mention the fact that the puzzles are easy and there are only 10 of them, there is no AI, and the multiplayer has NEVER worked, what you have is a truly terrible app.
I downloaded this to see if I'd like the physical version, which I think I would but the app itself is very bare bones and riddled with bugs (pun not intended!). Tiles disappeared completely, one got stuck and zooming and moving around the board was fiddly. I may get the physical version in future but the app will be uninstalled shortly.
This app does not do this game any justice, desperately needs updating. Puzzle mode is faulty, and lacks a single player against A.I mode. Not everyone should have to buy the real version of HIVE just to experience it properly! Such a shame :(
This app is unfinished and is unlikely to ever be considering the last update is from January 2014. Multiplayer simply doesn't work. The options for more tiles don't work. The puzzle mode is an interesting way to introduce base mechanics but should just be a working tutorial and puzzle mode should introduce different strategies - which doesn't really matter considering nothing else works.
Game pieces look slick... And that's it. "Puzzles" break game rules, and there are only ten. Multiplayer is broken at best. Sounds are repetitive, loud and shoddy. On-screen text looks like a hello world demo, not like a commercial application. Love the physical game, but this app is terrible.
It needs an AI, I have the game in both full size and pocket size, and although this app is true to the actual game, it desperately needs an AI, it does have a puzzle mode, but after you solve those, there's nothing left but playing both sides solitaire, the ios version of this game comes with an AI, so I can't see why the same can't be done for this android version, I would gladly pay for this app if that's what it takes, but until this issue is resolved I can't give this app 5 stars, if it does happen I will gladly revise this review.
If you want multiplayer you need to ask a friend and can pick random match because nobody else will be online. Puzzles are way to easy and there are barely any. App looks ugly, the music cannot be turned off and it has bugs (haha, bugs), it is possible to move the bee when it is pinned by a beatle.
1) Needs AI for single player. 2) Too little puzzles I suggest at least 100 for to be worth while ( not 8 levels). 3) Glitchy when using zoom and moving pieces. 4) Multiplayer is a lie. It is never usable. I can never find anyone. 5) the biggest reason this app is garbage is because who ever responds to complaints said "coming soon. Stay tuned :)" almost two years ago and no updates have been introduced. Bad business to not listening to your customers. I would have paid 5 bucks for a working app.
I have the physical version of this so bought this one too. Such a shame as you have too zoom way out to see the whole board as game progresses. And you can select additional tiles such as the ladybug and mosquito tiles woch is frustrating. I hope this improves soon
This should simply NOT be in a store. I had to see it for myself, but yes: this app is definitely broken. It actually makes pieces disappear, allows clearly illegal moves, and disallows legal moves. On top if this it has very unpolished looks and bad interface design. It's the little things: the default zoom is bad, unused pieces are messy and cut off by the screen edges, textures aren't crisp, pieces in a stack are hard to distinguish, it's impossible to revert an accidental move, the menu is confusing, etc. etc. This app was obviously not tested with real players and that makes it painful to use, which is a shame, because I really like the original board game.
Clumsy interface, doesn't work well, doesn't have the pillbug, just all around awful. Has a very amateurish feel and is honestly an embarrassment considering online board game sites do a much better job implementing this game.
A shame this has not been updated in over 9 months - it shows a lot of promise. As others have stated, it needs a working AI for single player mode, online multiplayer mode needs to be fixed, and a few bugs need to be ironed out. Want people to invest in the add-ons available for purchase in the app? Fix the basics first, and that will follow...
Plain and simple- my fiance and I each downloaded the game, had it open to play, and after each taking one turn, it wouldn't let us move any tiles. Tried to double tap, hold and drag... nothin! And I think it's silly you need to each have thr game open to play. You should be able to come back to it to play your turn at your leisure.
Can not play multi-player because it says server offline. This looks like it would be a great game but without a way to play what's the point. Both my friend and I installed to play online and now will Uninstall. :(
Its a bug that the programmer is just too lazy that all the wrong solutions will lead to the animation of grasshopper jumping into that position. However, according to the rule, if you put the ant near the white bee, the white bee will be surrounded and you still lose the game. But there is indeed a solution, that is, put the ant on the other side of grasshopper so that the grasshopper is not allowed to jump because the link with ant will be broken after jump.
