A: It doesn't need it and you can deny granting permission but if you grant permission to access your location then the map will auto center and zoom on your location so that might be handy.

Delete your cookies and the app works perfectly... Other than that this is a fantastic mobile app for the website but after the last update it continuously says unable to keep working & shuts down immediately 🙈 I would happily give five stars if this issue was fixed because I use this application quite often when traveling to see where all these amazing sites are located on a map! Thanks guys
With the 10/19 update, the app cache needs to be cleared for the app to work. I like this app version of Atlas obscura. App is buggy, sometimes it'll freeze and it would really be helpful if one could list the map locations like you can with the atlas obscura web site. Nice effort, please stay on upgrades.
This app worked okay on my older phone, but I've upgraded to a newer phone and like everyone else has been saying, the app crashes and closes immediately. Would like there to be an update since the last one was in fall of last year.
Completely unusable app. Worked great and after last update can't even open it because it crashes. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling but won't even install correctly.
Since the latest patch, I can no longer open or use this app. It just immediately crashes. I've tried deleting and reinstalling with no success

huge thanks to another reviewer that told to delete the cache+data, now it opens fine. it would lose a star for the frustration, but i love using the app so much, just happy it's back working!
I'm not sure what this is useful for. It's either broken or I don't understand the usecase. You can't search, you can't open a list of the ones near you, and places that I know are on AO don't show up here.
would be better if you could log in and track where you have been and where you want to go. the ap also has stalled 3 times in the first 30 minutes of use.
I'm really surprised that Atlas obscura doesn't have an official app but I'm thankful to whoever made this. Proven invaluable on all the pointless road trips I take into the middle of nowhere.
Was OK for awhile, but now refuses to open at all, it seems that the developers have lost interest too, UNINSTALLED.
Really good, would be better with additional features but overall really good helpful app.
Super unresponsive, touching a marker on the map causes it to crash on Galaxy S7 (not throw an error but stop responding to commands)
Have loved using this app on my travels and recommended it to others but unfortunately the app won't open !!! Very disappointed as currently away travelling and really wanted to use it
I have alot of fun with this app. My riding buddies and I use it frequently.
Each time I want to open it it jumps back to my main screen with a msg saying "app keeps stopping"

So far, working great. Given the reviews I'm mildly surprised. Oh, I denied it location permission, so maybe that helps?

Love having this mobile version of the atlas!
A very handy way to explore new places ... when it works, that is. The October 2019 update made the app crash upon starting, and the only fix was to clear the app's data and cache. Pretty lame. On the plus side, now that it's working again, I can get back to exploring new places where I'd never thought to go before.
