Too many pop up notifications with seamingly breaking stories. Like how can you put an article Christmas 2100 as a breaking news? The structure of the app with a lot of content to pay and useless news, is taking upper hand. It used to be an amazing news app! Not any more!
This used to be by far the best news app in germany, but now nearly all articles are behind a pay wall. Not only is 20 euros a month waaay too much, but you can literally find the same articles in English on cnn and other apps since they mostly don't even write them themselves. Probably my biggest disappointment in the whole appstore! Edit: They actually managed to make it even worse. The app now has such huge advertisements in it, that the whole thing is super laggy. App has no value anymore.
Love the app, I wish it were easier to navigate to the English section.
Loads better than the mobile version on a browser. Unfortunately, photos cannot get saved anymore, and the same applies to sharing. One shares the article, but not a single item as possible in the browser. But I guess that is intended like that. Additionally, the old SPON (without the menu) had a much better menu, whereby one did not have to sift again and again through the ever repeating topics one has read already before.
The retro look, all these different fonts and font sizes, the color, the layout, the in-your-face ads....and now the bragging about the dark mode. Red on black and light grey on black is very hard to read. Bottomline, good content but a horrible app. Just like the website. A UI and general design mess that makes you want to leave as quickly as possible. I've been reading Spiegel for decades but this is unbearable.
I have s full subscription. Why the heck do I have to pay an additionally PUR fee just to get rid of the annyoing ads? Furthermore, app is switching to other articels automatically and sometimes loads pretty long (both since last update)
I have to get trustworthy news from SOMEWHERE if I want to know what' happening in the USA , AND the rest of the world. Der Spiegel definitely fills that need; it's the news source my stepfather's crew read and trusted, so it's where I naturally turned. I can't tell you anything about features because I pretty much just read an article, using reading glasses, no special other tools, and move on.
I tested the new app and I find it rather bad. You can check several topics that you want to get information about, but there is no option if you don't want video articles or short notices. Also Spiegel+ articles are often not shown as such. Think I'll stop using Spiegel as source. It got too annoying with the update...
almost the whole content requires a subscription! no thanks
Liked the old layout much more as the content was very structured and clearly. Now it looks very chaotic with no structure at all and you have access to only less than 60% of the articles as most of them seem to be available only if you are subscribed. Big disappointment imo.
Went from a clearly structure and modern layout to an old school design that works better in print. I personally dislike the new app as it is just not pretty, more complicated to navigate and harder to distinguish what I can read as a user of the free version.
Great news items with reliable information
I speak english, but I enjoy this app not only for its professionalism, but for the opportunity to improve my knowledge of this wonderful language!
It was better before, now i am lost, i don't know if i am on start page or wherever else. The links to actual top themes above the main page are useless. It is not visible what is the active touch surface to go to article. Reaction on touch not visible and with delay, specially on my samsung galaxy tab. Probably "overcoded".
Excellent. I like to read because the material is written from a different perspective which is interesting and very often compelling. I'm very grateful that Der Spiegel translate some of their articles into English because I don't read German. It is interesting to read about Europe and Germany and sometimes Britain from a German and European perspective.
Increasingly more articles are locked behind a paywall which is at 20€/month heftily overpriced. That in combination with the ads make this app horrible. It used to be a good source of news, but that time has passed. Edit : While it's a good sign that you seem to read your users feedback it it's still not enough to simply mark your overpriced paywall.
About a week ago, the app started suddenly crashing whenever I open an article. Phone OS and app are up to date with latest versions, and I don't have problems with any other apps, so Spiegel will be deleted. Shame, I liked their reporting, but the app is useless now.
The new design is not clearer & better, it is all over the place and chaotic. It reminds me of lifestyle platforms like pinterest - in my view a leader in news & journalism loses if it tries to appear as such. I was a daily user - now only sporadically checking in & leaving after 1min of confusion... sorry, really a loss...
I am very disappointed about the new update as it does not load properly on my older phone (just hyperlinks no photos). I have been a keen Spiegel person for many, many years. But with this new version, unfortunately I now have to uninstall it.
Latest update caused phone battery to overheat and drain performance. Uninstalling has had an immediate and drastic impact in phone performance. The app was a menace . However, I will miss the news content which was great.
I recently downloaded it and am enjoying it enormously. Great to see a point of view from the continent at this crazy time in European history. I can also continue improving my German language skills (still not good on the written side :) )
The new design is horrible. Retro 1980s look, 3 different fonts in 1 article. On top now endless scrolling. Used to be a good app to get a quick overview of what's going on.
I've been reading the Spiegel for more than a decade now and really appreciate this app. Please add a notification channel for Spiegel+ in the apps permission settings to make it possible for users to unsubscribe from those articles that require a subscription. Thank you!
The update is an utter mess. Before the layout was perfect and now its impossible to read anymore. I'm not gonna read Spiegel Online anymore after being a faithful reader for a decade. I suggest you fire whoever was responsable for creating this nonsence, and return to the old version
Much worse than the print version. Yellow press-like articles - badly researched and badly copied from news agencies around the world. Doesn't have a dark mode, which most apps now have to save battery and eyes resp.
The latest update may be more in brand, but the usability is horrible. What did you think, guys? Followed the live ticker for soccer games, which is now virtually unusable and require sdcc searching and clicking. The UX is a nightmare.
Great content, and a truly great archive, like a time capsule
Love you from my childhood, my dad was a German literature "Literatur" as i heard it from him.
Never experienced any of the reported crashes. Very happy with the app. The major downturn is the many many articles that are restricted and cannot be read w/o a paid subscription.
