VR Theater for Cardboard

There is a new 'Couch Games Software' on Google+ (http://goo.gl/1WQNDl): make sure to subscribe if you are interested in news about this app! And if you like solitude, check my newly created and almost deserted facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/vr.theater!!!
WARNING: this is a beta version, and although it seem to work fine on a lot of devices, it sports such astonishing features as:

• sub-par graphics
• boring instructions
• clumsy controls
• limited features
• embarrassing User Interface
• limited movie formats compatibility----

VR Theater for Cardboard allows you to enjoy your own 2D and 3D movies in a virtual cinema, for free (it also supports panoramic 360° and 180° movies)!

Do you have your Google Cardboard ready (or, why not, a better headset, like the Homido VR)? Good! Just upload the movies on your phone (or open them directly from a browser or a 3th party application!), load them with this app, and enjoy!

VR Theater for Cardboard supports SBS, Over/Under and Red-Cyan anaglyph formats, as well as plain 2D movies in all formats originally supported by your phone (go for the .mp4 files for a sure hit: your mileage might vary with other formats), and can be used both on devices with a cardboard trigger, or with the ones without one (with a keyboard or a classic focus control scheme).

.srt subtitles are also supported, and can be selected manually, or automatically detected if they are named like the video.

Make yourself at home: check the "Options" menu and configure the theater to your liking!

The movie represented on the virtual screen ("Elephants Dream" (c) copyright 2006, Blender Foundation / Netherlands Media Art Institute / www.elephantsdream.org), can be freely downloaded in both SBS and over/under version at the URL: https://orange.blender.org/blog/elephants-dream-in-stereoscopic-3d

This is a great VR app! Very simple, works well as intended, NO ADS! BRO! I'm just gonna help out point some minor flaws to make the app better: it might just be me, but I can't change the environment. Even if I select the other options like VR theatre for Cardboard, it's still the void one. Downloading a photographic environment doesn't work too. But it's just a small issue though, the fundamental functions are there and it works great! Good job!

A truly wonderful and amazing video player for VR, thank you for creating and sharing this for free with us! It works smoothly and does what it should, the controls are intuitive and easy to work with. My only complaint if any would be the interface: I'd love to see it updated with nicer icons, have the controller color customizable, and ideally be a little less complex as there are quite a lot of options in the settings menu. I hope this is still being updated and we may see new versions soon!

Solid app so far, just having trouble with the photographic environments. I've used two phones, and on both it just tells me there was a problem downoading them and to try again. It's wierd, as I can manually download them fine, but then I'm not sure what to do with them. I can't find a 0/android/data/folder to put them in.

I had my doubts, before this one I used other apps and they aren't bad, but this one... It's amazing, can't believe that there are no adds, I absolutely love it, the hands free menus and being able to change settings while the video is playing, this app is perfect!

This app is exactly what I've been looking for. Not only it supports controller-less operation, with a well thought out interface, it also allows for inverse landscape orientation. The latter is a must for my headset, which only supports my phone in one orientation (which for some weird reason seems inverted to most other apps I've tried.) The ability to change screen size and aspect ratio on the fly is very welcome, too. Kudos to the author, please keep up the great work!

[Update] I have downloaded some movies straight from Netflix to view in the app but I cannot seem to find them. I watched a film and did not realise it had this padlock thing to lock the screen in place. The drifting of the screen was so annoying. I kept centering the screen every 3 seconds or so. But when I came here to write a bad review, thankfully I decided to read the comments. I CAN LOCK MY SCREEN! It's a miracle, this app is amazing.

The app is great, works perfectly, no crashes whatsoever and it's the only vr cardboard theater app I've come across so far. If the dev is reading this, I have a suggestion: I really like the idea of being able to choose a photographic environment. But it would be even better if you could use a custom photo for the photographic view mode picture.

Tired of looking for a 3D viewing app? Look no further. This app is all you need. Best part is the controls (play, pauze, fast forward etc.) that you can use just by looking at a hotspot on the screen. It takes a few minutes to figure the controls out but it's easy after that. Just make sure that you read the help. It's free without any ads so just try it.

Awesome app bro, just that some mkv/MP4 videos I have subtitles in-built into the file, can't seem to turn those on. The subtitle page in the app says there's no subtitles. I tried with VLC player and the subtitles can be selected and switched on. Other than that, awesome interface able to calibrate just by head motion. As someone with a budget VR headset without controllers, this is the best app to come to. Will give 5 stars if the above is fixed.

This is honestly a great app, the interface is nice and simple, the 3d works very good and the quality is just super for a free application with no ads! There are a few bugs unfortunately that I have encountered, i cant skip or playnack the video/movie otherwise the audio just skips to a completely other time in the video which is a bit unfortunate, and maybe add in an extra few description sets for all the buttons. Otherwise this is still a very good app! Thanks!

This app is incredible, it does 99% of what I want it to do and it does it all very well, very feature rich. To get that last 1% covered: is there a way to go to the previous/next files in a folder without using the Focus UI, such as with a connected bluetooth keyboard/controller (even just knowing what keys/keycodes to send would be great as I can just remap them with Keymapper or something)? Thanks!

I have recently purchased a google cardboard style headset and have tested the same 3D video on over 40 different VR Video players. I have a Hauwei P20 and after thorough testing, this app is by far the best in terms of 3D picture quality. Very impressed and it doesn't take too long to get used to its user friendly interface. You're only temporary drawback is that it will struggle playing some Ultra HQ movies, but it looks like this is being improved. Brilliant work, thank you!!

Edit Update: The suggestion from the developer to change light intensity is exactly what I was looking for. The settings are still a little arcane, but with some tinkering this is a great app. And helpful replies in this section from the dev mean a lot. Upped to 5 star. The interface and options to customize settings are great. Really a top notch viewer which just feels really nice to use. There's really just two things holding me back from giving this one 5 stars. For one, the red bubble to access the control wheel is annoying when I have a headset with a tap button. I'd much rather have a setting for 'tap opens the menu' than trying to change sliders to put the red bubble in the least intrusive place. For those without a tap button, it seems to work pretty well though. Second, for whatever reason this app (and some other VR viewers but not all) cranks my screen brightness (Pixel 3) once a video starts playing. I can't isolate the cause, and while there is a brightness slider in the app it's settings are un-intuitive (what does -115 mean?) and I've had difficulty trying to work with both the in-app slider and the overall phone brightness to make the video look right.

Great app. Pop up interface works well. Works with my cheap $10 VR Box. Great features. It would be great if you could return to the main menu from a video once it is playing. I thought that was what the x button in the top left corner was for. But pressing it once just pauses the video and pressing it twice just exits the app. Still a great app though. Galaxy S8.

I'm giving this 5 stars on just how well it used to work. anyway, something changed in nokia 6.1 pie update and this now runs badly, as in the video runs fine but the update rate for where you look has a horrible lag (used to be completely smooth). hopefully there is a fix. thanks for the awesome program. i also see this lag in two other similar programs, that was not there before android 9 update.

Woj. G. Oct 4, 2020

Hi Riccardo! greetings from a long time user! yours is the best app around to watch movies on a simple headset. however, after the latest update the My Videos command no longer shows the full file directory on my Note9 but only a small selection of folders which does not include my dedicated movie folder. Also, there is no longer a possibility to navigate to the SD card. Ideas please? EDIT: Problem fixed itself, app back to its excellent 100% functionality!

Updated to Android 10 and seems to not be compatible. The app seems to not be able to find my videos anymore, nor can I connect to it via, going to the video, and manually choose it to view in the app. The option just doesnt show up. You also don't see any videos in the app under my videos. Will change to 5 stars when fixed. The app is honestly my favorite among the rest vr simulator.

Itt. H. Jul 1, 2020

Quality of video is ok but not good. I see straight line in video is bend which is wrong. I have tried in another app and it display correctly. Another one disadvantage is lack of fish eye feature for Vr. But this app has one thing that is better than any other app is controlling. You can play/pause and recenter by just a single click on play button of headset without a remote controller.

Impressive app and the most interesting app description I've ever seen (such a cool author!). The app still works flawlessly on my older phone (LG G5 on Nougat) but after switching to LG V35 on Android Pie it only works for local videos as it has lost the ability to stream from LAN (samba) shares! Now every attempt to stream a video from a network share gets the app stuck at "Checking the file format..." for several seconds and eventually fails with "This file cannot be read by the embedded audio/video decoder of the device", which is incorrect because it works perfectly if I copy that same file to the local storage on the phone. I tried resetting the Android default apps, reinstalled the app etc. but it still fails the same. Also, I tried different file managers -- and they all can stream that video from the network share if I select another video player (e.g. MX Player), it's only this app which cannot do it (even though it worked fine before on nougat and the older phone). If this little network streaming bug is fixed I'll gladly update the rating to 5 stars, because otherwise the app and the author deserve all the praise!

I really like this app because of the easiness of the motion controls, but I have a remote control (Android senses it like a keyboard/mouse) that I sometimes like to use to quickly tap the screen to reenter instead of using the motion control to do it, or to use the cursor to start the video after I already have my headset on, but whenever I use the remote, I get this weird green rectangle in the top left of the screen.

Good app. Clean interface. Works with bluetooth controllers (most viewers don't or do it poorly). Unfortunately some of the settings (i.e. screen distance and height) still do nothing so you often get a distorted rendering of depth. Still the best of the many viewers I have tried and still ad free.

This app is pretty neat. It's a bit hard to conquer the controls but in time becomes less tedious. It basically adds a 3D effect to non-3D videos. The settings may be a little advanced for the typical user but nothing unlearnable. Highly recommended for a cool 3D perspective.

Well, of all the VR players out there; this one keeps it simple. You will not be overwhelmed with settings you have no idea about. The interface is good (for what it is), though feels a little stuck in 2013. If the interface was more polished I'd give it a solid 5 stars.

Tweaking the settings made this work well for me. Drifting reduced most by increasing "activation for neck rotation"%. My phone screen and video both were not in 4K, "high quality graphics" fixed it from being too blurry. Thank u dev!

ViV. B. Jun 25, 2019

excellent work. i downloaded and uninstalled dozens of apps but it is almost perfect.(edit) 1. can you keep the screen rectangular. rounded sides are not always good. 2. when i increase the screen size the big red dot looks ugly. also the pointer is difficult to find. 3. if progrees bar is added then it will be perfect.

Seems to worked to play fullsbs 3d movies right away. Is there a way to move the red "options" bubble? I like to zoom in a little and it covers part of the video... Maybe make it even lower? All in all though, worked better than everything else that I tried so far. * Update... Found it in the settings.
