it's kinda of disapointing but im still giving it 5 stars because it's a good start. i'd like to see a more in depth version that actually talks about how its really bad for the rehabilitaion of criminals. i've seen some comments saying that oh its just criminals being locked up these are the same people that saying water boarding is good.....until they try it. i also hate the comments saying this is a master peice.....as far as VR it's among the best mobile apps so far....but its not something you couldnt get out of a youtube video
I mean their IT products are really solid. For this app: the cinematography I'd say isn't the best, but the VR quality is good.
But you can tell which comments are from Guardian readers. 'Powerful', 'evocative', 'devastating'? This is not an opera, but a brief insight into what it's like for a pretty serious criminal to live here. Oh do I detest liberalism. Criminals deserve to be punished.
It is a short demo, but gives great insight on life in a cell. I can't imagine staying in one, nor do I plan on finding out. It's worth the download and worked great on my 6P.
Sitting or laying on your bed trying to feel the presens is recommended.
It was pretty good, not nearly as traumatic as I thought it would be though.
A real eye opener... I loved it
My review is based from a VR experience point of view, as the app permits a sort of 'cinematic' AR stile viewing as well. The VR is immersive enough, given 3D sound and center-view 'interactions' For what it wants to present, it does so wonderfully. The interactivity is limited to descriptions of some of the things you look at, and how inmates get to interact with them and the like... informative. (reminiscent of Count of Monte Cristo). it has a minimalist environment, (low texture detail) which is OK given that is meant to work through CardBoard on a wide array of phone specs. The reason this does not get 5/5 is the jittering. Surprisingly for such a small environment, on a high-end phone (Samsung S6) moving one's head at a speed faster than 90'/2s (any direction) it jitters painfully, in the truest sense of the word... painfully. Lastly, given that it is the 1st VR experience, Guardian, your app branding needs work: you either make a stand alone app 6x9... or you make an app that permits the choosing among different experiences... although you only have 1 so far... Granted it's the 1st and there is room for improvement with each iteration. Good Luck onward!
Not fit for purpose due to constant crashing. Resolution quite poor also with obvious horizontal lines.
Tried a few times now and it keeps crashing as the meal is served, about 2 minutes in. I'm sure it would be a much deeper experience if it worked for me. I'm on an S7 with Google Cardboard.
Good set up but keeps crashing. Very frustrating. Haven't seen much of it at all...
Experiencing constant crashes after around 2-3 minutes. Loving the experience so far though. Very eager to see fixes!!
People complaining it doesn't work have phone issues. Works fine on Note 3 with Google cardboard.
This truly felt like I was locked up and the commentary and images were so vital to the story. I did leave the experience feeling a bit depressed but amazed at the same time. So educational.
I really wanted to experience the story, but application just keeps crashing. I have high end phone with plenty of memory and very good GPU.
Really evocative use of VR technology. I've been craving an experience with the technology that is educational, immersive, and asks important questions about society from an alternate perspective - and this app does a remarkable job of hitting all of those notes... I will say that the user's interactivity with the environment is limited, and this is more of a narrative space for the user to investigate, but the shifting in time works well to propel the story. Keep up the good work Guardian - show the potential of this technology!
It worked a wonder on showing what it is really like in solitary confinement for prisoners. The one problem I had was far away text on the walls was to difficult to read.
Great eye opener and educational. Seems to have pretty bad drift issue with the Samsung S5 though. By the time the video ended, I almost drifted 180 degrees.
Absolutely devastating. it changed my mind. Now the question is what can we do? How can we do to help those people not to damage themselves and others. Thank You Guardian for passing this important message to us.
Randomly crashes in the middle of playing, great story until it crashes FIX!
Fully immersive! Guaranteed to leave you feeling a bit lost and depressive afterwards.
A cool and unique way of presenting information
Redundant,....Does it come to anyones suprise really that the reality of solitary confinement is just that?. Sad but true!. To get there you had to have earned it!. It doesn't come by being a good overall law abiding citizen. It is meant to be what it is....Do what you must do to never end up in that hell. Solid!.......
