Did not recognize serial number. Had to do it multiple times over a couple of days before it did recognize it. Wifi setup took about 40 attempts before being able to select router. After that it doesn't stay connected and the app has sign-in issues. Both apps are useless.
Had the water heater installed yesterday. Added the app to my phone and connected to the water heater today. I was hesitant to try based on all the low ratings One thing I noted is that I had already registered the water heater on the A.O.Smith website. No option to manually enter the model/SN info. Scanned that off the tag on the heater. (For some reason the camera working through the app wouldn't focus up close. Backed camera away and it ended up getting the scan) Good luck to all.
Terrible. Cannot use app because the serial # isn't recognized as mentioned in so many of these reviews. No response when trying to reach support for this issue. The only benefit of spending the extra money on this water heater over the others at the home improvement stores is that there is at least a green light so that I can see that the unit has power.
This is what happens when a tank welding and fab shop steps into the realm of servers and software, there is a steep learning curve. Don't turn on the flood gates before your systems have passed QC testing, it'll leave a mark on your reputation. I don't know what to say, other than I've had my water heater for 30 days and the connectivity side of it does not work. Strange is, the app says it was released in 2011 or something. Learning curve must be steeper than anticipated.
Cannot Find Serial Number As so many other people have stated, the app is unable to verify the serial number for the unit, so I am left without all of the advertised features. This is ridiculous for the fact that this has been going on for months now without a solution. I may change my rating once it is working, but until that happens the review will remain at a 1 star.
Garbage app rarely works. Have to call every 2 months to get the heater added again. Not worth paying the extra $ for it. Will be returning the unit for a better brand where the functions actually work correctly.
Functionality I paid for but not working. As other reviewers have stated, the app will not recognize the DSN. AO Smith technical support is a joke with the rep literally reading to me the iCOMM user guide word for word as if I was unable to read. After wasting 45 minutes on the phone I was informed by the rep, "there are bugs in the system and it is being worked on". Really? No idea of when a fix might occur? Nope. That was it. Sorry, you are SOL. Good luck and have a nice day. Sucker. I asked if I could speak to an iCOMM tech support engineer. The answer was no. This is version 6 of the app and users have been dealing with this issue for months. This isn't rocket science. A competent app developer can easily figure this out. There are 100's of more complex apps in service for Android, iPhone, PC and Mac that successfully provide this basic type of functionality. Clearly, AO Smith cares only about selling water heaters and has no real interest in supporting homeowners with Wifi connectivity as advertised. Does the app work for commercial users? I don't know. AO Smith charges substantially more money for their "connected" device products boasting about their iCOMM app features in their marketing. More and more I've come to expect that advertised functionality in many consumer technology products is a joke. If something doesn't work as advertised then the end user has no recourse other than to contact customer support and waste their time with off-shore contracted tech support reps reading from a script telling you how sorry they are to hear of your difficulties and how happy they are to assist you. Have you rebooted your computer, sir? Please uninstall and reinstall the app. How many times have we heard this and have had to jump through hoops to try and solve a problem. Manufacturers of technology, service providers and developers of paid apps should be liable for misleading or deceptive advertising and the end users lost time. AO Smith is no exception and I personally have had enough. The only form or recourse is class action. Although I may only receive a few dollars after waiting a year for a suit to be settled the satisfaction of knowing a bad-actor company had to spend $$ to defend a class action suit is good enough for me.
Absolute garbage. Do not buy. The reviews on this app show that evidently nobody has made successful use of the app since the last update almost six months ago .... Wasted money purchasing a smart feature that doesn't apparently work for anyone.
The app now works! It was discovered that the interface wasn't connected when they scanned the water heater during assembly. So, I gave them two pictures showing what needed to be matched to my account. One - the data plate showing the serial number and model number two - on the control panel, there are two screws on the lower half holding a plastic cover. Remove screws & take a picture of that QR code with number below it. Send both pictures to AO Smith. Allow 24 hours to process.Try app again
It does not work! I was finally able to get it to take the serial number, but now it will not take the DNS Code. I keep getting a message Server Error 504. AO Smith, work on this app before you advertise it on the packaging.
Works just fine 22 Mar 2022, nothing wrong with the App, trust me. Be PATIENT it will load. Use the square QR Code, manually add serial number. Once Green light, I connected will not connect 5G connection PATIENCE is a virtue
I can verify serial number on your website, but cannot verify on your app, what's wrong with you? And the app show up Serial Number Not Recognized. I can't even connect to my water heater.
Like many other before app will not read water heater serial number . Compleatly useless!! Paid extra for remote monitoring and can't use it !!
Like all of the others, it would like not take the serial number. They should refund the extra money for the app feature.

Can not connect do to it can't recognize serial number. I am about to call low's and request a refund. Then call there CEO and let them know about this issue.
Sucks - after successfully adding my water heater, the app lost all details after 2 days and wanted me to go through the drill again - I doubt it....

Called tech support and informed app not ready for water heaters. How can you sell a product with box labeling stating wifi connectivity for remote management and not have the app ready. Tech support couldn't even give me a timeline on when it would be ready.

Tried 15 different passwords of at least 8 letters one cap and one number and could not create an account. Not a good show.
App is junk, server error constantly, not worth the extra $300
It says error code 404 and never let's me sign in..it's just a regular water heater

Edit: after over an hour on Tech Support hold, and then waiting 2 hours for a call-back, finally got a CSR that was able to do something on their end and the app finally is working!!! Serial Number Not Recognized. I've tried the QR code scanner, I've tried entering it manually, I've tried deleting and reinstalling the app... I've entered the SN so many times I've just about got it memorized, but "Not Recognized". I paid EXTRA for remote access to my hot water heater and it DOES NOT WORK.
