When something is trippy, it means it’s a little weird, off-kilter, strange, surreal...
The word comes from the 1960s when people were taking the drug LSD (lysergic acid) and going on ’acid trips’, which often turned everything you looked at into wild, spiraling whorls of colour and movement, a bit like how an animated Van Gogh might appear.
The term they coined then to describe how things looked in terms of bright shifting and turning colour was psychedelic. But trippy has emerged from acid trip and applies to the whole gamut of experience in a less extreme way.
