ActiveOBD for Subaru

The ActiveOBD offers a free and simple multi functional information display for your Subaru vehicle. Despite the initial stage of its development, the application is able to reveal some sensitive information missing on the display you might already have.
The ActiveOBD fetches the information directly from your vehicle via the OBD port and operates completely independently from the multi function display of your vehicle so you're absolutely free to use both in parallel.

Requirements:
- Subaru vehicle MY 2012+ (OBD CAN communication protocol)
- compliant ELM327-type adapter (see below).

Compliant adapters:
- OBDLink LX Bluetooth r1.2 (obdlink.com/lxbt/)
- RECOMMENDED;
- Vgate iCar2 Bluetooth / WiFi (http://www.vgate.com.cn/en/iCar%202%20bluetooth-240.html)

Conditionally compliant adapters:
- ELM327 v1.4-1.5 (including noname clones);
- ELM327 v2.1 geniune only (http://www.elmelectronics.com).

Unsupported adapters:
- ELM327 v2.1 noname clones.

AWD tab
- front wheels position
- Torque split front-rear (Lineartronic Active Torque Split AWD; solenoid duty) *
- front-rear Slit (over-rotation)Also:
- Coolant temperature
- Engine oil temperature

Info tabs
- Automatic transmission (AT / CVT) Oil deterioration degree
- AT / CVT Fluid temperature
- Fuel Level (percent of total tank capacity) **
- alternative Fuel Consumption counter since last refill ***and more.

Trouble Codes tab
- Diagnostic Trouble Codes (OBD DTC) with Subaru-specific description
- clearing trouble codes

UI tips:
- Menu is accessible an Android-way or by the title bar clicking;
- AWD/Info tabs: Long-click on the item (icon) starts drag and drop within the tab;
- Info tabs: Short-click on the item (icon) toggles the display mode (icon/description);
- AWD/Info tabs: Short-click on a free cell
- insert the new item (from the list of unallocated). Note: items availability depends on the vehicle, use this when connected.

Notes:
* The Subaru AWD system has some hydraulic pressure active constantly providing about 5% torque transferring from front to rear. Further torque distribution is done dynamically (on demand), ActiveOBD shows this dynamic value.

*
* The fuel level is a subject for fluctuations. The application needs about 5-7 minutes of continuous running before the fuel level value can be displayed.

**
* A standard fuel consumption calculation approach is based on fuel amount counter at the time of its consumption. ActiveOBD offers an alternative – a calculation based on mileage and fuel level (in percent). According to the current implementation the counter is being reset on refill (done with ignition switched off), just open the State mode after refilling – the fuel consumption counter should reset automatically.

You have to pair with the ELM327 device before using this application, Google Nexus guide (Pair with a Bluetooth device) :https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2819579?hl=en

I really like this app. It helped me when I needed to know the temperature of the transmission oil, which not a lot of apps offers! So, thanks a lot for that!!! Please add feature to connect with wifi obd2 readers, it will definitely increase the usability and become more compatible with different readers!

Can confirm CVT temp worked with 2017 Subaru Forester and using the OBDLink MX+ adapter. Thanks for creating this app for those of us who want to do these general maintenances. Holding back the 5th star only because I wish it could pull even more live data pids from other modules.

Please add enough layouts for all the gauges. Incase we want to use them we have to remove some gauges and put another one in place. If you can do it please do it At the moment there are 5 layout but about 50+ gauges Please make atleast 8 lay out space

Despite buying the recommended adapter (the obdlink lx) I'm stuck in limited mode. I've made sure the firmware is up to date and tried directly and through torque but no dice with the advanced functions. Hopefully the dev can push an update soon that will fix this since I'm certainly not the only one having this issue. Will update this review of that happens.

I have edited my review, because of MY MISTAKE. Original review: Worked for awhile and then I was bombarded with connection notifications and would not connect. Absolutely a spamming scan! The constant irritating connection issue I now believe was not the fault of this app, but a update issue with either the reader or my phone. The situation seems to have been resolved and I and again very happy with the app. I do apologize to the app creator for my previous review.

I got this app to measure CVT temp in my 2016 Outback. I have a BAFX (about 8 years old) adapter. It would not connect no matter how I tried. Torque pro would connect, but Active ODB would not...the Pairing screen would just sit there forever and never do anything. However, I finally got it to work. If you're having trouble, try this: 1. Clear your app cache. 2. Delete the bluetooth device (mine was OBDII), my phone says to "forget" it. 3. Restart the phone. 4. Let the Bluetooth find the OBDII adapter and connect to it. 5. Start Active ODB 6. Pick Connect 7. Pick Bluetooth 3.0 8. Pick the OBDII from the list. I tried everything above, but restarting the phone did the trick. I wish the app had more gauges. Maybe the premium has more, but the basic version has the CVT temp and that is what I want it for. I hope this helps!

Does not read error codes and caused a check engine light to turn on in 2014 Crosstrek. A previous version of the app could read error codes. I'm using OBDlink MX adapter. When the check engine comes on the cruise control does not work. *Response to the developer: The check engine light was first. It starts when the app connects to the obd2 adaptor, but not every time. The app can still read pids such as rpm and what not even with the check engine light on but can not read any error codes.

Galaxy S9 (android 10), VLinker MC+, 2019 Subaru Forester. Only shows IOS OBD2 adapter available to connect to not the android. You can only configure the gauges and graphs when connected to the vehicle and it's running otherwise the buttons are not active. Would be easier to read if background was white with black digits.

I have to lower my rating for three reasons: 1- CVT Deterioration Ratio removed from the new app. 2- Steering direction removed from the new app. 3- Being not able to setup the gauges without connection is annoying. Update: I reviewed the developer reply and the first point is still not clear. I am assuring that CVTF Deterioration is removed from the free available parameters. I have a SUBARU XV 2014 and I used to have it before the new GUI update.

Used to measure CVT temp for a CVT fluid change, it worked perfectly with a cheap BAFX bluetooth ODB reader paired with a phone running Android 10.

I like new interface. More grater than before. More flexible. I using it for my family two subaru forester, 2014 2.5L and 2015 2.0 DIT. WORK VERY GOOD. Only two things: please add scroll indicator and screen number indicator. please add configuratin save option, or add different screen config switching option. Will be Good if add backup with Google drive or account option. Once more: add offline work option for after drive analitics. Big thank's!

Doesn't seem to work well with a 2020 Ascent. The old version worked better. I left the beta program to abandon the new version, but it's still here. E: thanks for the smart a$$ reply. Hard to believe you can mess up functionality that worked prior. Ef this noise, uninstalling.

Hi, does not work with my forester 2017 8 months ago and also now. Pls help fix and thanks. Cheers. Update: wrote to developer about connection hang at step 3 of 4 with downloaded report under menu option who nicely advised I need to remove other obd SW polling data which was indeed the case. Plugged directly into the car obd port and while not stable and short lived, I saw for the 1st time the AT/CVT like Martin 😃 Pending more help from developer .. to be updated and rating changed to 3. Tks.

Awesome app, works great in my 2015 XV. I run it constantly and I enjoy watching information change with changing driving conditions. For example, I see the CVT temperature increase when driving up steep hills. Thanks to the developer for a great tool to work with my Subaru.

Gives all the necessary live data readings for a subaru. Challenging at times to get these critical readings from other obd2 apps. Drop down readings of trans temp, engine oil temp and coolant temp is brilliant. Only issue is with frequent dropped connection. Hopefully an update can fix that issue.

Got the appropriate reader ("budget choice") and now works beautifully. Using the random one I had prior didn't play well. Check here then buy the adapter. Odd manipulations to change dials etc but hey it works!

Bought the obdlink lx and it would not pair. All other apps paired just fine. I am really disappointed, I saw a video of this all and the obdlink lx doing exactly what I needed it to do. Hopefully it needs an update of some sort to be compatible. Btw I have a 2014 Subaru Forester XT.

The description for this app says the recommended OBD adapter is "OBDLink LX Bluetooth." I bought that specific adapter (for $50), set it up, installed this app, and got a message saying "Incompatible Adapter... Please refer to the Google Play description for details." The app doesn't even work with the recommended adapter!

Edit: Used to disconnect all the time, but some recent update fixed it. It works well now. Good work. Great app Subaru impreza 2018 - pixel 3 xl - Veepeak bluetooth OBD2 scanner Edit 2: Beta version never connects

War. K. Dec 22, 2021

Really good for Subaru. Lots of features not on other apps.

Ric. G. Apr 13, 2021

Works with my "cheap" 5 year old BAFX adapter and 2021 Outback XT. Used mainly for CVT temp and info. Took a few minutes to know which bluetooth (3.0 in my case) and to customize readout and charts.

Don. K. Mar 28, 2019

It keeps connecting and reconnecting to the ecu all the time, sometimes displays some data for few secs. Adapter Vgate, tried with few different devices, same result.

Sen. M. May 8, 2021

Doesn't work - will not connect - uninstalled. Torque Pro works great, I could never get this one to connect. It just sits there trying to connect then kicks you out.

Bea. X. Apr 9, 2022

I wanted CVT temp and it gave it to me so i have no reason to give it less than 5 stars.

vic. w. Jul 21, 2020

Will not show transmission fluid temperature on a 2020 Subaru outback. This was the reason we got the app. It seems to only show the information already provided in car info on the head unit. Using obdlink LX

Gar. M. W. Apr 26, 2020

Have not been able to get this to work despite buying one of the recommended Bluetooth adapters, Vgate Ipro. Also while Torque Pro connects okay the Active OBD plugin inside Torque pro does not work.

Mar. F. Feb 29, 2020

This App does not appear to work with the recommend OBD. I purchased the OBDLink LX Bluetooth, and the app will only work in "limited mode". The info needs to be changed or the code revisited to allow the recommended OBD to work with the App.

Ree. Oct 5, 2019

I purchased the recommended Bluetooth device for this app. The app would not successfully connect to the device. The problem is not with the Bluetooth OBD device, but rather with the app. I know this because I was able to successfully use the Bluetooth OBD device with apps other than this one.

Jef. S. May 24, 2021

Works great on my 2010 Forester with a generic odb II I bought 7 years ago. I just can't find any way to upgrade to a pro version to show thanks
