Aircraft ADF Free

Aircraft ADF provides you with a GPS based aircraft radio magnetic indicator (RMI) instrument shown as a typical Bendix/King KI-227 instrument.
It lets you 'tune' aircraft navigation non-directional beacons (NDB) and gives you bearing and distance information to that NDB.It uses a worldwide navigation database (downloaded on first use) and is not restricted by radio range. It uses your device GPS position and heading to calculate bearing and distance to the tuned NDB.

This is the free version, with advertising and a five minute time limit. Upgrade to the paid version to remove both of these limitations.

Features:
- Bendix/King KI-227 face
- Worldwide NDB navigation database (downloaded on firt use)
- Digital Bearing and distance to station indications
- Option to operate as rotable compass card (just rotate with your finger!)
- Filtered and smoothed display
- no jitter or jumping!
- Support for portrait and landscape screens
- Support for multiple screen resolutions

Usage

IMPORTANT POINT 1
- Please ensure you have an active data connection when starting the app for the first time as it will attempt to download the radio navigation database.IMPORTANT POINT 2
- To function correctly, the application requires not only a GPS position fix but also a valid GPS groundtrack. It may be necessary to move your device to give the GPS the data it requires to make this calculation.Don't use it until you know its working! Until a GPS fix is obtained, or in case of GPS fix being lost, the ADF will 'park' itself at 90 degrees and '---' will be shown in both the bearing and distance text boxes.Tuning a stationUse the app menu to select 'Tune NDB'. You will be presented with all the NDB stations within 200 nautical miles of your current location. Selecting a NDB will tune it up. Hit your devices 'Back' button when you have selected your desired VOR.Interpreting the displayIf you have a valid GPS fix, the bearing to the NDB will be shown by the ADF needle and the top (or left in landscape mode) digital text box will show a digital bearing indication
- the course you need to fly to travel towards the beacon. The distance in nautical miles to the NDB will be shown in the bottom (or right in landscape mode) digital text box.Rotatable compass card By default, the ADF compass card will slave itself to the GPS groundtrack, making the instrument a true single-needle Radio Magnetic Indicator(RMI). However, you can manually turn the ADF into a rotatable compass card instrument using the toggle option in the app menu. Once toggled, you can easily rotate the card using your finger.

Pretty bad. Downloaded twice only to have the same problem. It says there are "No Stations In Range". I am less than 1.5 miles from an airport with multiple ILS system, a VOR, & an NDB. Ive tried to reboot, and recalibrate the phone but thats not the problem. My other apps that use them are working just fine. At this point Im pretty glad that I DIDN'T purchase the upgrades. I think I'll uninstall and just cut the loss right here. Nice instrumentation, but no REAL instructions on how to run it

More modern smartphones no longer have a dedicated MENU button, making it impossible to tune any NDB, which brakes the application completely. If/when the app is fixed by adding a menu button I'll give it more stars. EDIT- Four years on, reinstalled to check, but still no fix for the NO APP MENU TO BE FOUND. Goodbye, sorry.

I'm trying to use this software as it looks cool, but alas the software can't find my GPS signal or something. It keeps flashing the satellite symbol and then of course times out after 5 minutes due to the free status. If I can't get it to work at all, I can't exactly purchase or upgrade to the full version. And the web address for the developer isn't correct. UPDATE: I rec'd an email from the developer and he had me download a GPS test app. My GPS wasn't working the way I was expecting it too. So now I have that working and the app is working but still no usable ADF's in the area I guess :-( The developer isn't putting ADF's stations below a certain wattage into his database. Still has a web site address I can't bring up though.

I could use the app as a flight instructor , but then it would need a position derived from wifi , otherwise it does not work in a building. Better yet , giving it a start position using an icao code would then be even better ! Same remark for the VOR app

App isn't able to acquire satellites, at least where I am. It also seems to be for Europe only. In looking thru the NDB list, I only saw European NAVAIDS. Disappointed in Arizona!

This works really well. Database is huge, is really easy to use and is super accurate. You need to move to allow the GPS to aquire a groundtrack, which caught me out at first, but makes sense. Another really good app by Sensorworks.

I love all the Sensorworks apps! They work great, even the free versions, and are a fantastic learning tool for student pilots. It would be great if there was one app that combined all of the instruments so you could use them simultaneously. Keep up the good work.

Intructions refer to the app menu. You must specify or select which ndb for this app, or vor for their similar vor app, but menu is nowhere to be found. I am using an andriod 4.4.4 on a Samsung Note 4 and/or android 4.4.2 on a Samsung S3 with no sign of an app menu.

Database is not sorted, impossible to quickly find a station. Please add the ability to type in the desired freq. This would be a great training tool if I could tune it manually...

Cannot detect ndb in my country...

Tom. N. Dec 2, 2012

it doesn't display the ndb's for my area - near Albany NY. The same developers vor app does, and works great. This would be very handy for ils approaches which require adf to locate a decsion point, and ac's adf is flakey. Work around would be if you could manually enter an ndb, but you can't.

Easy And Efficient.......

It is better than the real instrument. This one uses GPS signal allowing user to home-in to any NDB (way point) on the installed database. It is not limited by poor radio signal on a real ADF. Being a pilot, I would highly recommend this app for other pilots.

Looks and works great on my droid 2. Nice to get distance on screen too. It's going with me in a glider on Saturday.

Just works, much better than the real thing! My phone does not have a menu button, but one can be enabled (on my HTC) through the phone Settings ->Displays and gestures. Also the app only shows an ADF indication when it is moving (since it is dependent on the direction of movement, right?!) Hope this helps.
