Alert SA

The Alert SA App is an official Mobile Application of the South Australian Fire and Emergency Services Commission (SAFECOM) and provides users with timely, relevant bushfire information in South Australia. The App displays bushfire warnings and alerts, Fire Danger Ratings and Total Fire Bans, with users able to create up to 10 Watch Zones, specifying areas of interest to them. Users are encouraged not to rely on one source of information during bushfires, and to access other channels such as www.cfs.sa.gov.au, CFS Facebook and Twitter, a battery powered radio and the Bushfire Information Hotline: 1800 362 361 (TTY 133 677).

I wish they would stop making updates that remove features. Last year when there was a major fire, the mapped burn zones would show up, like they do in the website, but for some reason not now... only the polygons showing.. its a handy thing to see how far a fire is actually spreading and which direction. Don't want to have to switch back and forth between app and web when clearly its using the same info.

Could be a great app, too hard to tell what fires are going or complete. The map needs colours to denote status or if the fire's complete, remove it. The list needs options to segregate fires into status again with colour codes. Notifications need to be timely. During the latest fires my wife was 5 minutes faster than the app using the cfs website on the same router I was using, it wasn't service related, 5 minutes equals death out here.

Wasn't visible in play store as of time of writing so was slower to find the new release but early use of the app is promising. Clean layout, minimal links and text - straight to the point. Loads fast and hasn't crashed when checking all available links. Questions at time of review: Wondering if there are colour coded banners for different events or urgency of attention? Also, for. Simplicity sake even if listed under more information, it showed which appliances were responded to events?

My experience with App during Cudlee Creek fires: Notification settings need to be fixed & filterable. Need option to filter out notifications for fire bans and other unnecessary info, only need alerts for new fires in watch zone. Needs an option to filter between "complete" and "going" fire incidents on map. The map gets extremely cluttered and hard to determine new (going) fires from extinguished ones. Would be nice to click on a fire in 'list' view and go straight to that fire in map view.

I find this app a bit frustrating, I would like to see some colour coding of the fires like the actual CFS page. Instead of having to click on every fire to find out it's status. Imagine missing one and not realising the fire is still going in your area. The colours make it easier to see the risks for yourself. Please add this feature in further updates.

The app is quite easy to use but it doesn't give you notifications about all incidents in your watch zone (by design) I suggest making it optional to have all those notifications if you want or turn them off if you don't, there was a fire on my street a couple of days ago and I didn't get a notification about it.

This app won't give me alerts. I've uninstalled and installed twice. Set my watch zone twice and gone into settings to adjust everything. There is a fire close by but when I go into the info it doesn't give a distance just says 0 kms and keeps showing 0 minutes for when it was last updated.

I've downloaded the app and configured my watch zone, but no alerts were received. After reading your FAQ I realised this is by design, not a bug. "users were receiving too many notifications. ...push notifications will only be sent to users when a Bushfire Advice, Bushfire Watch and Act or Emergency Warning Message is issued for a fire in your Watch Zone, or for Total Fire Bans". I would suggest, make it configurable when creating a zone, so the user can choose what notifications to receive!

Could not get it to come up on screen and had to go to Google play each time i wanted to access it. No problem getting the nsw fire app when travelling. Not enough information to help anyone to make important decisions. The NSW fire app is amazing. They need to work towards creating same style which could save lives. I hope someone takes actions asap for us all.

This app needs a way to disable notifications for burn offs, like keep the alert in the app but I dont need an alert for every burn off in my alert ereas. Clearly the developers have never heard of alert fatigue, the number of in consequncial alerts has made the app useless. Well Done! SA Government you the best at tech 💪

It is frustrating that this app doesn't show the burnt area like the CFS website. Instead you just see an enormous polygon vaguely associated with various generic and confusing icons. To get a sufficiently detailed spatial understanding of the fire I typically find myself opening up my laptop to view the CFS website. Also the alerts seem very 'spammy'. I don't want alerts when an incident severity is downgraded!

Very handy app, but when pressing for more information on an incident the CFS incident report opens as a desktop format page that requires a lot of horizontal and vertical scrolling to read properly on a mobile device. It would be more user friendly if this was fixed to display properly for Android devices screen size.

ALERTSA ISN'T DESERVING OF THE 1 STAR MINIMUM. Years ago when it was first introduced it was a great app but the wheels fell off the wagon, support for it was discontinued & around the start of this year it was revamped. I'm a South Australian, I find the idea a great one but this app is terrible, alerts don't automatically come with an map, you have to search for it and only few alerts to incidents in watch zones. Another free app, specific to SA does it better SAFires (not just fire alerts).

The recent fires in Adelaide Hills showed up some user issues. Firstly, circular watch zones with km radius means multiple messages where they overlap...Or a ton of irrelevant messages for zones not in your area of interest. 2nd the old system of the flame icons changing colour on the fire map, blue, yellow, red was better than the current where everything is in black. Once a fire has been downgraded perhaps they should be removed from the map so that current, dangerous situations are obvious.

I've loved this app before and am glad that it's back. I hope to see more features and improvements especially when determining watch zone sizes (currently min of 5km) and hope to see it can go down as much as 1km or 500m so we can have more information on what is really close by.

Thanks for improving the app. Over the day, the map fills with completed jobs, making risk assessment difficult. It would be helpful if active fires were a different colour from completed ones. Or there was a filter for active fires only. Thanks

Maintenance of data in this app seems to vary between errattic and non-existant. E.G. fire is contained on one day and alert sent. Yet 48 hours later, another alert is sent with the same status. There have been no intervening status changes. Also, alerts are available on other websites, sometimes 3-4 hours ahead of this site. This calls into doubt the usefulness of this app. "Fires near me" is more cumbersome but it is accrate and timely.

App is essentially useless when it doesn't send you any notifications despite all the notification settings being on. There's been a bushfire advice and watch an act for a fire within my zone today and yet NO NOTIFICATIONS! Facebook appears a more reliable source for information and notification than this app. FIX IT.

Needs a lot of work. At the moment self monitoring cfsscan and cfs website is more efficient than this app. Make it so we can customize our own alerts instead of waiting for an emergency broadcast. Incorporate more accurate info from relevent apps and sites. Add alerts for ambulance, fire, police and weather like the old app did and make the alerts customizable. Living in the country i used to get alerts for which roads had grape spills or even chemical spills. Needs alot of work to be useful.

Does the job, only grizzle is when using the more info link the page that opens doesn't quite fit to screen,i gave to scroll page left to right, right to left to read info, Dunno where the fault lies, however having to do it in a stressful situation wouldn't be ideal Thanks

Strange app. Sends me an alert, then when I try to look at it, it tells me it's expired! It also sends me alerts for areas hundreds of kilometres away, despite having set up a watch zone.

A. G. u. Dec 22, 2019

This app works well enough, alerts me if there is any type of warning issued in my nominated zone. The only down side is that you can't tell the status of the incident by the icon, you have to tap on the icon to find out the status. After the Holland rd/ Cuddly Creek fire, there were more than 50 icons contrated in the one area. Very hard tell of what is going and what is complete at a glance. Apart from the push notifications the CFS website is better.

A. G. u. Dec 12, 2019

Only provides limited details on fires only not on any other incidents the CFS might be attending. Clicking on the "more information" button doesn't give you more information on that incident only general information. There is no way to gauge the size of a listed fire other than to leave the app, go to to the CFS website and look up the fire to see what alarm level it is at and the number of appliances and aircraft attending. Still needs a bit of work.

One year later, still beed different colour marker for 'going' VS 'complete' incidents. Very difficult to assess risk on busy fire days without this distinction. Link to 'more information' for a given fire just links to the CFS page, not more information about the specific fire. If getting an alert and opening it, going 'back' closes the app instead of taking you to the map so you can assess risk.

This app is a waste of time now. It used to be great give you alerts of a fire nearby. It's absolutely useless. You get no notification look for the smoke yourself. Stay safe. Another government app that is rubbish!

A. G. u. Dec 20, 2019

Great that it's back but need to fix the 'more information' link (leads to a 'dead' version of cfs website) and allow tailoring notifications as needed. When a fire happened less than 1km away I got no notifications. Then trust is gone so you end up back on cfs pager/website. Isn't our learning from today that people nearby should be made aware before the fire becomes out of control? What psychos gave "feedback" that people wanted LESS notifications? Those people obviously don't need the app.

A. G. u. Dec 20, 2019

So far 2 stars guys. Well done getting it out. Compared to "Fires near me NSW" and "Vic Emergency" this app has a way to go. Several fires occurred in in my watch zone but Zero alerts! Hard to believe all Australian states don't just use a "Fires near me" or "Vic Emergency" licence or whatever and port local data to established great apps.

A. G. u. Dec 16, 2019

In my opinion i think its not very easy to setup and it deffinitely needs more control options over the alerts it produces, and if its got em, i cant see em. I tried setting two concentric zones around where i live in the adelaide plains. But now its telling me about fire bans in the mt lofty ranges which are 80km away and not at all relevant to me. I dont want junk mail messages that state the bleedin obvious. I dont want my phone bleeping away at me all day with irrelevant information.

A. G. u. Dec 30, 2019

Nice and intuitive app. I would suggest making it easier to tell if an incident is still going or complete, such as by using different colours.

Chr. W. Nov 3, 2020

Works well on my phone. It would be great if it was made so you can select your own separate notification sound so it different from the normal Android sound.
