The update is very annoying. You used to be able to filter your elevation more. Now once you hit 1,000 feet, the next option is 2,000. Why did this change, what if people want a max elevation gain of 1,200 feet? The app is also slow to load, especially if you're trying to look at photos. Being able to enter in values for the filters instead of the slide bars would be better.
Good to research and download. But not great. It's difficult on a phone to look at a cluster of trails to see where each trail goes do to the box that will hover the other trailheads. Plus when you zoom out to see where the trail leads, if the trailhead leaves the window, you'll lose the whole trail. Which is very frustrating when trying see long trails.
I love many things about the app! it's been a companion on so many hikes and some of the recent upgrades have made navigating offline less boggy. One thing I still find frustrating is searching for trails. When searching on the map, you should be able to pan around the map without losing the selected trail map. It disappears if you accidentally pan away from the trailhead point marker.
Usability could definitely be a lot better, it just needs simplifying down a lot. For example remembering base map preference, making it easier to explore an area of the map without trying to constantly show you routes, not defaulting to your current position when trying to correct the compass to North, and lots of other little niggles. I do miss the simplicity and ease of use with the viewranger app... it still feels like there is a gap that needs plugging following the loss of viewranger.
Very mediocre experience. Have had a subscription for a few years and never loved this app but it seems to be getting worse... useful for finding hikes, but that's about it. Won't load information about a hike half the time (it just hangs), and the offline mode is atrocious. Even if you save a map, you need internet to pull it up and initiate. Plus navigating the app is slow and the user interface could use some improvements. Edit 5/11/2022 - offline mode STILL doesn't work. Terrible app.
Good for: 1st glance info or seeing what trails MAY be in an area. Bad for: core map features; panning around or trying to select a trail that is surrounded by others continues to be a nightmare. What you would actually want from an outdoor app is slowly being pushed to the wayside for data collecting and revenue features like the new Community tab. Looking at reviews is also a futile effort. Authored by misinformed users, they often don't actually contain valuable information about a trail.
A good GIS for hiking, easy to use but yet with a critical flaw: how hard it is to download offline the maps with a premium account. Three friends and I experienced the same problem: inifinite downloading for certain maps which end up working after days of retrying, clearing the cache, stopping the app and rebooting the phone. Without this major bug, this app would be perfect for hiking, but in its actual state, I can only recommend if you are able to download your maps many days beforehand.
Trying to use the map is a nightmare. Especially if you're trying to look up a specific place or trails nearby. It just keeps resetting back to suggested nearby places rather than what you actually search. I've used this app for years and suffered through this aspect, but recently it's gotten much worse
I have the pro version and it works great IF I connect a portable charger as it really drains the cell battery but that is ok since i have it all attached to the bike. My one issue, and why not a 5, is that for some reason the lifeline does not update my contact's map as I travel. It used to do great but now not so much. I did discover, I had to disable my VPN but not sure what else. Being well over 70 this is sort of important to me. I do have great data reception wherever I go. Thanks.
I find this app difficult to use overall. Also a lot of the trails are not well-described and often mislabeled. An example: it lists a trail by my house as a great hiking trail where you can walk your dog on leash. This trail is actually a mountain biking trail and not open to the public without a membership...? I don't really trust driving out to places based on recommendations from this app.
The only useful feature would be the downloadable trail maps. But that feature is withheld from the free version. Don't know what these guys are thinking. On top of that, the app keeps losing connection and dies. Quite useless. Much better to just use Google Map instead.
I'm enjoying being a Pro member with AllTrails. I love how you can see the different maps, especially the light pollution one. I also like how AllTrails auto uploads my Garmin data onto the website so I can publish the map in the 'Suggest as a New Trail feature.' I don't really like how the filters aren't very effectively reviewed. For example, if a trail is an Out and Back, it will be coded as Loop. Or if a trail is Via Ferrata, but actually isn't... It's a bit disappointing after doing it
A great app to find almost any trail in Colorado!! Easy to use with pictures and reviews for each trail letting you know the difficulty, I haven't looked into it yet but I'm pretty sure you can post your own pictures too if you don't like the ones you see and you take better pictures than post your own with a review👍 haven't used it in about a year but I used it up by a Crested Butte and Gunnison Colorado and it took me to some amazing trails, great app for us outdoorsy people 🤙😎
There aren't really any ads, which is awesome. I love this app because it allows you to make your own trails, so even if you're not on an actual trail, you can still follow it in the app to get an idea of how to get back. My only problem is that it doesn't have a satellite camera view, which makes it harder to know exactly where I am, because all I'm seeing is just green blobs, some lighter green blobs, and some roads.
Subscribed for a year. The maps are good and trail descriptions by the community are helpful. However, the app performance is terrible. It drained my battery on several occasions - not something I can risk while hiking. So I don't recommend relying on this app when out on a hike, only good for planning.
I like the features but the update is trash. No visual/ feature differences that I've noticed, but now the app crashes and refuses to load way more often, and if you go in your search to view a trail and go back, scroll position is gone, brings you back to the top of the list. I like being able to save trails, see the maps, photos, and reviews, but there is improving to be done. If it ever gets fixed, I'll gladly pay for the service.
The glitches are incredibly annoying. Zooming in and out removes your highlighted trail while searching. Why not highlight every single trail on the map, keep them there at all times, and assign each one a different color? There are so many no-brainer fixes that could improve this app. I've been using it for 5+ years and the same issues persist. This is why I will never pay for pro. Also, been screwed when the app shuts down or won't open when you lose service. Hoping for a good competing app.
Edit needs serious work. The only thing I have ever tried to use edit for is because I have started to navigate later than I actually started, or because I hit finish when I paused instead of resume. Also, resume should replace the pause button, and finish should be the new button to the right. And edit should allow you to connect to the work you just finished so you have an accurate trail instead of broken pieces due to partial uneditable inputs.
Update: I've been a pro user for a long time, and I've emailed Support. Please bring back custom sorting. Since the last update, I lost the ability to custom sort the trails in each of my lists. Custom sorting allowed me to prioritize the trails I planned to go so that it is just a matter of going down the list. I can still do that on the web, but the trail order does not even reflect on the app. Please bring back that feature! I am limping without it!
It used to be great. This "new & improved" version is terrible. It took forever to connect to my full bars signal, making me force it to stop, clean the cache and try again. For the first 15 minutes on the trail it had me walking backwards, but looking beside me. I couldn't get it to show "direction up". I finally did, but whenever I turned my screen back on, it would change back to "North up". A massive leap backwards. I'll go find an older version and turn off updates.
Not a good app! I won't buy this again. Poor maps, very hard to understand with map layout. This map seems wrong a good portion of the time. Don't know if your on the trail or not. This annoying icon stays on the top left of phone even after the hike and the is no easy way to get rid of it. I used to like this app, but the past year, it seems to really be failing.
Love this app, use it all the time! I end up using it for most of my camping, hiking, bike riding or whatever trips. It's so convenient and informative that it's become my go-to starting point for any outdoor excursion, from a romantic picnic by the river to Appalachian Trail backpacking. It doesn't always have links to park websites or pricing info for camping or permits, so follow up research is sometimes needed. It's best for browsing potential trails in an area or finding maps and photos.
