The idea is great. Terrible in execution. It should just be a part of the main app or be able to access without going through the main app first. Also it crashes anytime I try to look at a transaction. The ideal would be a widget that you tap to turn the card on and off but requires a pin code at each use.
Like most everyone else has said, this should be part of Ally's mobile app, especially when you tap on any of the notifications it sends you, it tries to open the Card Controls app, and then says you need to use the basic app. Truly and mystifyingly bad. On top of that, the notifications I get are delayed up to half a day and so are utterly useless. An absolute embarrassment.
When this app is working it's great. Sadly the main thing I used it for no longer works. I had it set to give push notifications whenever my card was used and that was working up to the most recent update. After that update no matter what I do I cannot get push notifications. I've reinstalled both the ally and card controls apps, deleted their temp files, and restarted the phone. I talked to ally support and they said they'd forward over my issue to their technical team but I never heard back.
Broke after the last update. No longer receiving transaction updates, and even when I select Help, it's supposed to bring up an email that I can contact the developers with to provide info, but it does not. It just gives me the normal share options that any other app does. So I can't even contact the dev team other than maybe this review. Ally bank really needs to integrate these options into their main app, like every other bank out there, instead of having a separate app to install and use.
First, this should be a part of the main Ally banking app. There's no reason to have a separate app for this. Second, every time I click on Card Controls from within the Ally app I always have to do it twice. The first time pops up a message saying card controls should be accessed through Ally bank even though I am. The second click properly starts it. Third, since there's no way on the website to lock your card then we need this put into the main app so it always functions. I always keep my cards locked until needed. The chip cards aren't any more secure than non chip cards.
I LOVE that Ally provides so much control over your debit card with this app. It's just a bit hard to open as it requires you navigate to Card Controls from the main Ally app, and it takes a few tries sometimes to get into Card Controls. Would love to see Card Controls integrated into the main Ally app.
Good for turning my card on and off, but needing to launch it through the Ally Bank app is such a pain in the butt. Even if you get a notification that something needs to be done in card controls, it tells at you when you click on it saying it needs to be launched through the Ally mobile app. My guess is that it is to make it so they don't need to add the same security into the card control app. If that is the case it's a lazy solution.
I used to use it all the time. The only problem was alerts would try to open the app and give you an error that it could only be opened from inside the Ally app. Annoying. Now it "encounters an error" every time I try opening it from the Ally app. Useless since last update. Tried reinstalling and no luck. Please fix! Samsung Galaxy S6
Love the bank and love the app. It's not another prepaid account like most banking apps. It's a legit bank. and honestly it's far better then the well known Bank branches I've used in the past. I love the card control app as well as the mobile app. Great features. But most importantly when I've had to contact customer service I was treated like I had a hundred thousand $ in their Bank. When in fact I was down to 20 bucks. They have the best customer service I've experience. A-1 !!!
When the app was (keyword WAS) working, it was fine. Had no issues at all. Would get alerts immediately after purchases. Then they did "maintenance" app hasn't worked since then. 🤦🏿♂️
I think it's okay. I am not really sure of the settings in regards to limiting the locations. I was unable to set up a USA location per se. I also went to turn it off and it told me that my card would be disabled and I would have to call in to re-enable it. So that is definitely a downside of the card control. Don't know if I'll continue using it.
Worked fine until I tried to look at a recent transaction for a card. While on the "Recent Transactions" list for the card if you touch one of the transactions the app crashes. I never tried this before today so I'm unsure if it worked in older versions or not.
Push notification aren't working. I have had the app for over a month with alerts set to notify me of any type of transaction, but I have never received a single notification. I guess the app may come in handy if I ever need to temporarily disable my card for whatever reason, but as of right now it is pretty useless.
Works well on turning on and off card and making rules and etc. However, after you get a notification of a purchase on the card, it can't directly go to the transaction. You have to go in the ally app first to sign in.
So, a rooted phone cannot use this app to disable a lost/stolen debit card? That's ridiculous. This shouldn't even be a separate app. It should be integrated into the main app and it should be a feature accessible via the website. Simply because I'm a developer, I'm not allowed to increase the security of my debit card? Absurd. Edit: Ok, it's even dumber than that. The app won't open if SuperSU is even installed on the device! Seriously? That's mind-blowing. Simply obnoxious.
I turn the card controls off for security. When I attempt to turn them back on for a purchase, they revert back to "off, not allowing the purchase. This has happened numerous times. I've spent hours on the phone with support. This became a huge issue when traveling. I moved my money to another bank.
Recently had to replace my card. I'm not getting any notifications on the new card. Tried turning notifications off and back on to no avail. I love it when it works though. It's what helped me quickly figure out I needed a new card and I could disable it before more damage was done.
Will not allow you to disable all transaction types. I can understand the warning, but it should accept this anyway. What I want to do is disable all transaction types for all my Ally cards, then only enable them if and when I want to use the card, then disable it again after the transaction, this will provide me with maximum security, especially on cards I rarely, or never use. Please allow the option to disable all transaction types.
Good app for keeping your account secure, but it would be better if I could have a "widget" on the home screen for locking and unlocking the card that I tap and authorize instead of going through the bank app, the account, the tasks, switching to card controls, and finally changing it.
This app has caused me so many headaches. The app will show that the card is on when it is not. I can't tell you how fun it to find out your card is not working at the checkout line in the grocery store, or trying to get gas. The uninstall/reinstall suggestion from the help desk is a complete waste of time. Once you download the app and link it to your card it's over. There doesn't seem to be a way to unlink it. It's gotten so bad and so frequent, I'm switching banks.
The app worked great until this week. The on / off settings are not registering so my purchases declined. When I try to view the transaction history the app shuts down. An old disabled card showed back up on the app. Now my good card is hot listed.
Don't add this app, it will lock you out of ATM's. They are having a lots of problems with app's program. Even after removing & unsubscribing. They were unable to fix the issue at first. It took lots of patience, a couple of days to resolve and too much time on the phone. Horrible app.
Yes, this app should be part of the main app. The worst thing about this app is that it sends push notifications, but you cannot respond to them directly because you can only access this app through the main app. If this were truly a stand-alone app, that would merely be annoying (3-stars?), but as a half-way integrated app, it's useless.
Works as advertised. Only issue... I thought I had turned off my new card for several days, but it was still active. I didn't realize it was actually my OLD card that I turned off, not the new one. I suggest that devs delete the old card or have newest card show first, by default. TIP for those who don't know...if you replace your card and want to turn it off, swipe screen left to access the new card.
Ally is my favorite bank, but this app needs a lot of work.. this should be a part of the banking app and another issue is sometimes it shows card transactions instantly and other times there is long delays, even though signal is fine and the transaction is already posted on the main app.
A terribly designed app. The only way to make it work is for me to go through the other bank app and click on "card controls" through there. Trying to go through the app specifically just gives errors.
I love it. I think all banks should have apps like this or notifications about your card sent to your phone or email. I've caught so many unauthorized purchases and luckily with card control the purchases are block every time. Theft has gone up since covid lock down and I'm so grateful for this app saving me from loosing any money.
Worked great for years. Helped me avoid fraudulent charges on my account. Now it doesn't work at all, and hasn't for nearly a year. Not sure if ally has given up trying to make it work or what. Honestly, I love banking with ally, but this is a really bad look for an online banking company. Also, why should I have to download a separate app just to monitor transactions? Seems like in 2021 they could make this work. Invest some money in an app developer and get this going again ally.
Notifications for new charges are delayed by several hours, so if your card is compromised, your account would likely be cleaned out before you know to deactivate your card... and any interactions with this app just redirect to the main Ally app, making this app completely pointless anyway!
This app is helpful, but could use a bit of tweaking. My suggestions: when a notification of card use pops up, it tells you that ally must be launched. Understandable, certainly. The issue I have is you login to ally, then have to select other functions, then launch card control, and manually find the item the notification was for. Why not simply launch ally, to verify security, then immediately after logging in take me right to that specific charge. Another issue: It notifies me of my card use, but not my fiance's whom I share the account with. Perhaps all transactions using cards, or an option to notify for any transactions on the account would be helpful. Then finally, once you view the charge, all you can do is put notes on it. Why not add the ability to dispute a charge right into the app? I have had it happen where something billed me and they weren't supposed to, but I was so busy I just let it happen because there wasn't an immediate way to dispute it.
