Really great app if you want to do some crosswords on your phone. I searched through a lot to find myself here and mostly what's out there are ad-servers. This is clean and ad-free. It's snagging puzzles from leading papers, so you're getting good ones to solve. The font is lovely, the interface is good, and the simplicity of it all is outstanding. The dark mode is just a really odd screen dimmer and could use some love and attention and some of the settings like the error detector don't stick and need to be turned on for each new puzzle, but these are small complaints for something so entirely awesome!

Great crossword app! My only complaint is that the dark mode has poor contrast so it's difficult to use, with the phone's blue light reducing night mode on it's even worse and nearly impossible to use. The tablet interface is very nice, it would be great if progress would sync between devices so that could use my tablet at home and my phone when on the go.

This app is handsome and I appreciate its import feature. But the navigation settings need more options--especially one that makes the cursor jump to the beginning of an unfinished word , as other xword apps do. And you should be able to check a word without it being solved for you. The forward and back buttons are awkwardly placed. And altho it has a rebus feature that lets you put several characters in one box, the solve feature doesn't recognize it as correct so you can't check it.

Best of the crossword puzzle games... Basically an aggregator of puzzles from several really good sources. Has an error check function that shows mistakes on the fly, which is actually a lot of fun. 5 stars are well deserved.

Great crossword solver app. I do wish night mode was more readable (the black of the letters is pretty close to the gray boxes), but the app itself is very customizable and gives you lots of options for solving. Also, the patch notes say LA Times should work now, but it does not appear to have been fixed for me. LAT is one of the better free ones available that I've found so I hope it gets sorted out!

I am loving this app for crosswords! The interface is easy to navigate and I do like that it one of the few free crossword apps that can handle rebus squares. The handwriting font is cute and makes the experience that much nicer. I do wish there were an easier way to import crosswords to the app than to open each one individually. I have a collection of .puz files I would love to swap over from another crossword app that is no longer supported, but there is no way to do this easily.

Overall, a great app. But it has several flaws that really don't make sense. It's little things, like backspace not clearing errors, having the direction change button in an awkward place, the keyboard being too cramped, that kind of little qol issues. They aren't dealbreakers though; that's because it functions as a crossword app should. It fetches correctly, it stays up to date with changing formats (so far), and is well laid out visually.

Would love to see support for the Wall Street Journal too - that's the only reason I still have the now-defunct Shortyz installed. Also seems to be a minor glitch on tablets where if you double-tap a square quickly to select and change direction, it has a tendency to mess with the crossword zoom - which can be annoying if your screen is big enough to show the entire crossword at once and then it zooms out

Great app, easy interface, no ads! Update: Still love this app. Latest version says WSJ is fixed but not for me. Any suggestions on how to get that to download? Update2: thanks, got the LA Times back but not WSJ. Still a great app! Updated app on 9/22/21, no WSJ. March 2022 It's back! Haven't checked in months but WSJ is here again. This app continues to be the best. Thank you!

Fantastic app. Meets all of my crossword needs. More puzzles than I can possible keep up with - just the way I like it!

Mat. F. Feb 28, 2022

Just started using the app, but already came across a puzzle that used shaded squares in publication (NYT) but these did not show up in this app. Also noticed "linked" clues do not highlight. These touches would improve this app tremendously.

Best crossword app I've found so far. I really wish it had a full-screen mode to maximize screen space for what can be a cramped presentation (if it does, I can't find it in the settings). Update: An option to sort by date both ascending and descending would solve the issue of having to scroll through many screens to get to the oldest or most recent puzzles.

This was a great app for me up to a few weeks ago. I used to download an "acrosslite version" of the Private Eye crossword and alphacross app would import it (a .puz file), and allow me to (attempt to) solve it. Now my phone says I don't have any app that opens .puz files. Can you help please?

The best crossword app available. I do wish it had more support for external keyboards. I would love to be able to navigate the puzzles using the arrow keys.

Excellent crossword puzzle app. No ads that I've experienced. No crazy graphics or special bonuses to reveal extra letters. Just a great no nonsense crossword puzzle. I love the errors option, which shows when errors are made, which is easily selected while trying to solve each puzzle. 100% what I was looking for. Thanks for making this incredible app!

Gar. F. Dec 24, 2021

The questions it poses are general knowledge and not specific to the region/country - this is an important feature. Layout is pretty good for a cell phone. Would be handy to "slide" to another page where you could see more than just one clue (down & across). Also handy, if there was a button to display hints (letter/word).

A. W. Feb 27, 2022

Could use a dark mode and an option to "pencil" in words to differentiate guesses from sure things. Besides that this is a perfect crossword app.

Swa. M. Mar 17, 2022

The best crossword app I could find. It's got a range of publishers with varying difficulty, meaning I can play the difficulty I like.

Ati. J. Apr 17, 2022

Great app. Would love two more things: Arrow keys and an option to reveal a word or a square.

LJ. H. Mar 23, 2022

Great app I've used for years but now I can't access new NYT puzzles. I get an error whenevee I try to login thru Google for my NYT subscription. It's been this way for months.

Jas. O. Nov 21, 2020

An outstanding crossword app! It does not have its own built-in puzzles. Instead, you choose subscriptions to various sources, mainly newspapers: NYT, LA Times, USA Today, and some lesser known. Turn on all the subscriptions for just one week and you'll have close to a hundred puzzles of various themes and difficulty levels (Monday is the easiest for most). The interface is clean and easy to navigate. Most importantly, it is that unicorn app that is, somehow, FREE WITH NO ADS!

For some reason, I've never been able to keep my focus at most games for the longest time, except crosswords. This app is very well designed and the fact that is is ad-free means it's also free of distractions, and I love this app for that. Although, I'd be really happy if the developer(s) could code in another custom keyboard with arrows in, it would really help with the word selection.

Love having a number of crosswords to do each day, and the functionality in general is solid. However, some crosswords have trouble downloading from time to time. For example, for the last two weeks or so and although I remain subscribed, I have had zero crosswords from LA Times; I'm unsure why. Furthermore, on an older version, I was unable to punch in numbers and punctuation, making entries easier. Please resurrect this feature!

Sus. S. Sep 10, 2020

I enjoy many features if alphacross. I especially like the Los Angeles Times puzzles as they get harder as the week goes on. The app is customizable as far as whether or not to skip filled in spaces, when to show errors and even has a choice of two fonts. It used to have a button below the puzzle where you could select "across" or "down." Not sure where that went but it's still fairly easy to change direction by taking on the puzzle itself.

Glad I found this app after Shortyz has been abandoned. It looks great and works very well. So far I have three bits of feedback. 1) LA Times crosswords don't seem to be downloading at the moment. 2) I would like to have the option not to have the app automatically jump to the next word. 3) I don't see any way to get back to the list of puzzles while doing a puzzle -- in other words, no way to exit a puzzle without restarting the app. Thanks!

Rog. S. Sep 24, 2018

So close to being perfect...especially with easy download of NYT puzzles. I would love to see three additions to the UI: 1) it would be nice if simply tapping the toolbar would change the direction of the clue -- as opposed to having to target and hit the little symbol -- it's a completely unused space/action at this point; 2) it would also be nice, if a bit crowded, to have the option to have both the across and the down clue shown at the same time on the toolbar; and, finally, 3) why not have a slide left and slide right on the toolbar accomplish the previous and next clue, as opposed to a left arrow that you have to target and hit, and a right arrow on the keyboard that you have to target and hit? Thanks for listening and please keep up the development!

I recently switched to this from Standalone Crosswords, which has a great solving interface but has slowly been getting buggier over time. I really appreciate the browsing, auto-downloading, and file-opening in alphacross. The solving UI is decent but could be better for users of large phones (I have a Pixel 3a XL). First, with such a large phone, there's a fair amount of blank space under and above the puzzle, and I really wish that blank space could be filled with the clue for the other entry crossing the current square (without pulling open the whole clue list drawer which pushes the puzzle off the screen). Second, because the grid is pretty far from the keyboard, it's annoying to have to reach up to the grid just to do things like move to a different blank square in the current entry; it would be great if there was a control for that near the keyboard (eg, Standalone lets you swipe left and right on the clue). I also find the logic of always jumping to the next clue when you fill in the last letter of the entry (even if there are earlier blank squares in the entry because you navigated to it from a crossing entry) to be annoying. But it's an attractive, non-buggy, modern Android crossword app, and I'm really happy it exists (and would be happy to pay for it too!)

Hello developers, I really appreciate the additions in the latest update but now I have encountered a problem. I have a Samsung S8+ with a curved screen at the edge and with the new update, the touch screen at the edge is very unresposive. For instance, i cannot select a square at the edge, cannot reveal hints by swiping the screen from the right. I did not have this issue before the update. Could you please look into this matter?

You get 3 to 5 or 6 puzzles a day. No Ads. You could pull each one of them up separately yourself, but you'd have to search, and on each web site you have to watch a commercial before you get to do the puzzle. Plus, the individual web sites don't always work. This App is very convenient and enjoyable. Plus, you can download them on your phone, and do them later offline. I never miss a day!
