APP PERMISSIONS IN PLAIN ENGLISH

Here's why this app asks permission for certain things, in plain English:

First off, we're using the Android 6.x Marshmallow APIs, which means you you might be asked to allow the app to do something — say, access your SD card — while you're using the app. That's a good thing!

★Photos/Media/Files & Storage: These two permissions are used so you can upload images and the like to our forums. They're also used for downloading our podcast and from our wallpaper gallery.★Wi-Fi connection: This helps us better serve our award-winning content to you. It's used for analytics and to make sure nothing's going to kill your connection or anything.★Full network access/prevent device from sleeping/view network connections/set wallpaper: Gotta have network access to use the internet. Sleeping has to do with playback, and wallpaper is for setting your wallpaper in the wallpaper gallery.

Have a concern about a permission? Ask us! We're happy to help. Email [email protected].

FINALLY ...

Did you really read this far? Good for you. You rock. Thanks for downloading this app. And stay tuned for the next version, which will be even better than this one. Namaste.

UPDATE: After having not used this app for months, I just opened it only to discover that there is nothing in the feed newer than 4 months ago. It once had useful information but I found the random full screen game adverts with full blast sound so intrusive and annoying that I virtually stopped using it and I'm guessing many others did too. I see the need for some ads, but these were really really infuriating and I absolutely hate them! It seems that AC have now abandoned it too...

Please please fix this app! I've been a loyal Android Central reader since back in the day when it was a spin-off from Palm Central, and while the ads are annoying (OMG, defaulting to sound-on? Really?!?), I can deal with them. The feed not updating in a week, though, and refresh not working means we're stuck without new content. Desperately in need of an update!

For many years this app was my primary source for Android information. However, in the past few weeks it has stopped working. Nothing displays under any of of the section headings, such as Home, Forums, Videos, Podcasts, Wallpapers, etc. I have deletng the app and the app cache, and reinstalled several times to no avail. I finally decided to uninstall it. Please fix this app.

This used to be a great app, but in the past week has completely stopped updating. I have deleted app cache, then data (which resulted in losing all articles from the home view - absolutely nothing displays under any branches!). Tried clearing phone's cache partition - no change. Uninstalled, cleared phone's cache partition, reinstalled, and still a blank app. I finally uninstalled it after using it for many years as my go-to Android information source.

Love reading the site and listening to the podcast. I also understand the need for ads, but having full screen video ads that start blaring their own audio and cutting off whatever music, podcast, or audiobook I'm listening to is ridiculous. Banner ads and things like that are an understandable need. But don't fullscreen ad me and expect me to keep using the app

Over time, they have had to add a lot more advertising to keep it free. That's fine. Looking at a phone screen worth of listed "articles" meant looking at twice as many ads as news entries, but you didn't have to click. (I've actually bought some things.) Now, the ads are persistent, full page, irrelevant, disruptive, annoying and embarrassing. They pop up with every single article, sometimes after you have been reading for a bit, completely destroying the experience. So (heavy heart) - deleted.

The ads are super frustrating and annoying. I have been using this app for years even going back to windows phone. Over the years the articles with sponsored products have increased, which makes it difficult to navigate, but now the full screen ads playing audio are just terrible. Sitting in a quiet doctor's office it is awful having that blaring out of my speakers all of a sudden.

I have been using this app since 2014. This was always a great place to get information about Android devices and developments. And it all is. Now for the only issue. While I understand the need for Ads (people don't work for free) the ads have gotten worse over time. What would start as a little banner ad in the middle or bottom of an article turned into a banner ad separating every 4th article while scrolling, those were fine. However the full screen ads are getting out of hand.

App experience has become poor lately. "Articles" are simply ads for things which have been clothes and air fryers. When you do find an article worth reading, be prepared for full screen pop up ads. Really disappointed with an app I used to rely on every single day. Currently looking at other options. That being said, it is possible to pay a subscription fee to remove ads. I would absolutely do this if the quality of the articles improved, and it removed the sponsored posts and "Ad Articles"

Used to a great app that I'd check all the time. But the new ad model really is bad!! So much so that I'm really thinking about uninstalling. It has way too many ads now and even worse, there's no way to exit the ad before the timer is up. When the new ad model was released, it wasn't that bad as I could instantly press 'back' to get to the article. But that has since changed and now nothing works until the timer is up. Please change it, but then again, we'll see if I'm still around to see it.

I enjoy the content but the app experience has gotten much worse in the first quarter of 2019. It is now plagued with interstitial ads that often play sound. There should not be ads that automatically play sound in an app made for quietly reading articles - it's a terrible experience. There are better ways to generate revenue. And now (July 2020) there are interstitial ads that can't be closed.

This was permanently on my Samsung S7E/8.0 and was a great resource. Now the framework only opens for a brief moment on my BlackBerry Key2/8.1 and then closes itself. It has become useless. Update: it now does not even try to open! It just dumps me back into whatever app I had open before. Uninstalled again. UPDATED: all now seems good with the latest upgrade.

Not sure when it happened, but I'm getting full screen ads on my device with every article I open. Uninstalled the app, not worth it to read the same "ten reasons why I love this" article rehashed 10 different ways. I dont mind ads, but full screen ads that make me wait to read, not for me. especially sound ones with a 10 second timeout.

And. W. Feb 14, 2019

This latest version of the app adds truly intrusive Pop-up interstitial ads that you would see on knock-off Candy Crush apps. Also a lot of articles these days are sponsored ad pieces rather than news (separate issue from the app itself). I really have been an Android Central loyalist for many years. I understand the need to make ends meet at Mobile Nations, but the direction I am seeing in this app experience makes me a little concerned.

Cha. S. Sep 21, 2018

I loved this app for years. It has always been on all of my phones. My current phone's storage started filling up recently so I went to storage settings and sorted my apps by size. Surprisingly, this was at the top!!! The app size itself was fine, the cache size was reasonable, but there was almost 3GB of User Data!! How is this even possible for a news app?? Somewhat suspicious. Sorry Mobile Nations, long time fan, but I had to uninstall.

Phi. K. Feb 25, 2019

Ads, Ads and even more Ads. I used to use this site for news. It was a great site for all kinds of Android news. Lately all these "articles" on the site have become advertisements for something. The full screen ads on this app have become very intrusive. Some will blast the sound on startup. i get companies need to make money via advertising, but this is ridiculous.

Pau. C. Sep 20, 2020

I stopped using this frequently since 90% of the content seems to be sponsored. Used it today for the first time in ages and I was served a full screen ad that I couldn't exit (5-second countdown, but still). Immediately uninstalled and saved a few MB of storage on my phone - there's a tip they won't give you on AC!

Tod. S. Mar 29, 2019

After looking at this app on an almost daily basis for years now, I sadly had to uninstall it today after an ad unexpectedly blared music at me - twice. I don't mind seeing unprompted ads, but I can't have them playing audio on my phone when I don't expect it. That's an automatic uninstall...

Gre. S. Mar 2, 2022

It is March 2nd , 2022. App hasn't updated on several days. No new content. What's going on? After the most recent update the app crashes every time you open it. I have version 3.1.22 that was updated from Google play.

Mat. L. Mar 8, 2019

This app has become more of an electronics deal source than an android news source. It's a shame. It used to be the best place for Android and phone news. I had been considering uninstalling for a while due to this but the full screen ads were the last straw. Great podcast though. That is still informative.

edd. t. Mar 2, 2022

Not sure what's going on but in the last few days articles have not been updating and there is no images only text. Have been using the app a long time now and this is the only issue I've had.

Chr. M. Dec 15, 2021

Ads are ridiculous--banners pop into the feed as you scroll on the main page for every five or so articles, and you can't even read a single article without a full-screen timed ad with sound. TOTAL DISRESPECTFUL GARBAGE.

Cha. K. Mar 2, 2022

App no longer works. Says connection issue. Deleted and reinstalled and still does not work. Most recent articles/links are from 3 years ago after re-installing.

And. R. Apr 28, 2020

Though Android Central has been my go to for Android news for years, it has been over taken by advertising from articles that are just sponsored links in disguise (50%+). To pop up ads before each actual article. It's to bad really, from an app and site I use to use daily, to something I check maybe 3 times a month. I understand that everyone needs to make money but there is better avenues that doesn't hurt your journalistic integrity.
