Having offline access to Grog's Knots is a great time saver. Stumbled across the website after being tied of making it up as I went. The app has saved a few camping and fishing moments in a pinch. I always hesitate to purchase apps as they usually end up sitting idle but not this one. I didn't think the app had the description which was upsetting but its in the details from the menu button at the top right.
Had his app for years - it's good! Most knots are covered, are in categories and searchable. All have step by step photos to help you learn. Written instructions and you can easily go back and forward between each step. There is also more information about the knots, discussing strengths and weaknesses.
This is a comprehensive reference about rope knots. You control the anamation's speed. No physical book can provide an anamation. And, the app can be moved to external SD memory. Moving an app to external memory is really easy with "App Managger 3".
Great app. Everything from the design to the content is well thought out. The fact that I could get a step by step guide with quality pictures to tying an eye splice on my dock line while sailing with no service yesterday is well worth the few dollars the app costs. It's also been a lifesaver while rock climbing when I dropped my belay device halfway through a multi pitch rappel and I used the app to properly tie a munter hitch to get to the ground.
Only issue is that for surgical knots, you can flip the animation but they are not labelled right-handed/left handed, so as a default learners see the left handed version and look retarded in the OR not understanding why they have to put the needle driver in their left hand to do the knot, vs keeping it in their right hand as the method was designed for. left handed people will like this set-up though. Would like to see some netting knots too if you find some good ones.
I've used this app for years but had forgotten to leave a review. It's genuinely fantastic as I don't tie knots enough to remember them all, and sometimes you know you need a specific knot for a particular load or to suit some other practical requirement, and the vast majority of the time, there's one here. Cheers.
I have a lot of similar apps, this one's the best. I have used this app to help train CERT and SAR volunteers more than the actual course material. It's more complete and easier for most of they see it rather than visualize with static images.
Contents is great and application works like it should and doesn't rely on Internet which is great for a newbie sailor like me. My only wish is for it to have a bit better look. Design is clearly from targeting Android 5, which at this point is ancient.
Each description should also describe risk of loosening and ease of and requirements of undoing. It would also be helpful if knots coult be found by purpose and if descriptions were searchable. I know I want to join two different size ropes/cords/lines but I dont know the name of a knot for that purpose. The app has favourites.
So totally worth it. Found the website and thought it was by far the easiest way to learn new knots, and was thrilled to find out that there's also an app that I can use offline on my phone! The design of the app isn't super polished or perfect, but it gets the job done.
Great selection of knots for all purposes! Animations are clear and easy to follow, with additional text and explanation. #PyrateApproved
For the price, needs option for animation to loop. I have to let go of the knot to hit replay. Otherwise great. Will give 5 stars when fixed.
Hands down the best way to learn knots. You can go frame by frame with each step in case you are slow, like me :) the app is very intuitive and worth every penny
Incredible app that can be easily used to learn all manner of knots. Whether you're into camping, climbing, scouting, s&r, sailing, or even just decorating, chances are good that this app will teach you the knots you want to know.
Excellent app! Thanks to the dev. Could you check the "Square (Reef)" knot as the order seems a bit off, also the animation kind of stops halfway. Keep it up! 😁
Awesome app but would love the ability to create multiple custom lists. I am an Assistant Scoutmaster and Merit Badge Counselor and would love to have separate saved lists for the knots that pertain to different merit badges.
Only just opened it but looks good so far. Little gripe/suggestion. Have a section for tools. You use a tool that looks like it was once a coathanger so a section on how to make useful gear would be great.
The best depiction of knot tying techniques possible. The most complete list of knots and line details available on any format. The absolute best!
Ok the app it's self is a five star! but after a broken phone forced me to reload my app's, i was upset to find out it was going to cost me to download the app again, so i fired off an e-mail to Grog,he called my back within 30 minutes. and explained that something must have gone wrong, and that he would look into it. (yeah right i said to my self) later that day i had an e-mail returned that explained that he had found the 7year old account and explained that all i needed to do was log in to google play under that old account and the problem was solved. so of the best customer serviced backing up this great app, Thank you for your help Grog (Alan Grogono)!
Pretty good. I refer to this often when I need a bit of a slower guide to a new knot or when an illustration isn't quite right.
I've used the site quite a bit over the years teaching scouts basic knots. I was delighted to find that there's now an app. I would love to see the app get a Technical section like the website to describe rope terminology and rope types. I looked all through the apps and didn't find these rope basics.
Best app I've ever paid for by far. Worth its weight in gold. The range is great, the diagrams, the text that goes with it. Can't fault the app in any way.
My go-to knot app. The use of sequences of real pictures makes it easier to relate to as opposed to 3d animations.
The 2018 version of Grog Animated Knots let me move this app onto my storage card. I'm glad to have it on the storage card in order to save room on my Android device's memory.
Nice app, pretty clear instructions. Been using it for a while to make some pretty neat knots. Just wish it were on Google Family so my kids could more easily use it for reference.
Excellent Knotting App. Searchable index, ABoK references, clear animations, developer responds quickly to feedback.
This app is well worth it! I've used it all too often when trying to figure out a knot. A real life saver!
Great app, would rate 5 stars but for two things. 1: Novices like me would really benefit from the ability to have the animation play at a slower speed. Maybe 50% would suffice. It's not easy to manually flip through the steps while learning a new knot. 2: $5 seems a bit steep, but overall it is a very useful app to learn knots. Highly recommend.
