ArtLens

ArtLens allows you to personalize your experience of the Cleveland Museum of Art’s world-class collection, and explore layers of interpretive content for artworks in Gallery One—CMA's innovative gallery featuring art, technology, and interpretation—as well as on many featured works throughout the museum's permanent collection galleries. Visitors to the museum itself can scan the actual artwork with ArtLens to reveal hidden content and may link their ArtLens to award-Winning Collection Wall in Gallery One.
The ArtLens application main features include:

• Near You Now – Using the museum's indoor wayfinding technology, you can discover artworks in the collection that have interpretive content, such as film and audio, in any gallery. You can also use this feature to browse through the collection on a path you set yourself in the museum.

• Scanning – Employing innovative image recognition software, ArtLens can recognize artworks in the collection seamlessly, offering access to additional interpretive content. A special icon indicates which artworks have this feature. This content is only available on-site.

• Tours – Select from both museum-created and visitor-created tours. The mapping feature in ArtLens helps visitors locate specific artworks and navigate tours.

• Today – Get a daily snapshot of exhibitions and events occurring at the museum.

• Favorites – Save favorite works of art and share through Facebook or Twitter. You can also create personalized tours which can be shared with other visitors.

The Android version of the application also includes:

• Search – Quickly find favorite artworks that are currently on view by artist name or title.

• Top Ten – Explore the ever-changing list of visitor-chosen favorites, as well as our curators’ top picks of must-see artworks.

• Related Artworks – Discover hidden treasures in the collection from any object based on its collection, time period, and material, using the dynamic recommendation logic developed for the Collection Wall in Gallery One.

Launch the app, but be patient! The first time you launch ArtLens, it takes approximately 10 minutes to install and upload the collection to provide a more streamlined experience, but, we promise, it’s worth the wait.

Immersive, informative way to tour the museum by yourself! The actual ArtLens exhibit was underwhelming and the app occasionally crashes, but overall I love the layout, information, and ability to favorite items from the collection.

It's great when it works, but it generally doesn't work so it's not that great. Continual force close errors. Gps/wifi is just broken. Great idea.

Found no way to back out of the app with the Android back arrow. Have to "kill" app - to shut it down. ArtLens 1.0 was WAY better! Run on Nexus 6 with Android 6.0.1-May security patches.

First off, there is no signage anywhere to let you know about this app. I kept seeing "Artlens" by select pieces. That must be an app, I thought. Checked. Started to download...realized it was big so I canceled. Jumped on the free Wi-Fi and tried again. As someone said, I'm halfway through my visit at this point. Would not download on the wifi. Crashed at least 3 times. Many similar complaints so it's not just me. I have a pretty high end phone too. #fail

This dumps me out frequently in the must if something good. That said, the possibilities are great for this type of application.

I like the idea. The scan feature never worked, and it's not entirely clear how the scan feature works. The initial download took so long I was halfway through my visit before I could use the app. Maybe the app could load images on demand?

Doesn't work on Android. This is the new version downloaded today. Continuously crashes.

Loved the app. I had to uninstall because i just don't have the room on my phone. I'll most likely download again n again though. Loved it! ❤

Helps me to navigate the many, vast galleries! Try the Easter Egg options when you get to artwork with the iris or headphone symbols!
