I avoided updating this app for years because of how they changed how many gestures it takes to save a post to your profile. It used to be hold thumbnail, click save. Now it's, hold and click three totally different areas of the screen. If the old app hadn't broken down I never would have updated. Looking for alternatives. Also the thumbnails are tiny in the new version, smaller than the height of the post. Why?
Video ads autoplay when scrolling now. So you'd be scrolling along and suddenly the video advert starts playing with loud audio! No obvious way to mute it either. 👎👎 (03/27/2022 update) Bad ads have NOT been removed. PNC ads are one example of said noisy ads. (04/26/2022 update) Another noisy ad is something called Byler real estates. This one is particularly annoying since it starts with a sharp, loud jingle.
A longtime user for years, it's the best app for browsing the platform. Continues to stay updated and modernized, an absolute must have!
Good customization options. It's a bit hard to get used to, coming from the official Reddit app. The video player actually works, though.
New update makes it so you can't exit a comment without saying yes on a confirmation screen, overriding the back button. Infuriating bug that needs to be fixed.
the introduction of auto play ads with sound is the last straw. Update 5/14/22--Still happening and forced me to uninstall and go with the reddit app. Congratulations, you lost ad revenue from an avid user.
Been using this app since I started using Reddit basically. It's pretty great except it really hasn't updated alongside the new Reddit. For example, no built in i.reddit, v.reddit, gyfcat, or redgifs support for uploading images/gifs/videos. Can't see profile pictures, no instant messenger functionality, etc. If those features could be included this would 110% be the #1 app for Reddit on the platform.
I've been using BaconReader for about 7 years. I use it multiple times a day. There are some ads, but they're not really too intrusive (except for maybe that one I see a lot at the bottom that's white and very bright, which is a bit annoying when I have my brightness down right before bed). Other than that, I love it and I've never had a problem with it!
Very long time user, unsure why but posting within the app (picking a photo) doesn't seem to work. When you select image from gallery (photos) and hit post, an error comes up on many subreddits which states "this community doesn't allow links". Ask engineers is one.
Constantly crashes when switching from other apps. I am fully updated and made sure the app has enough memory to run on my tablet. I love this app, but the constant crashes are very frustrating.
Works perfectly fine. Does the job. Misses a few Reddit features but not ones that I care for. Would give it more but ads have recently started being able to play music which plays over everything.
Whenever it saves images, it takes between a minute to two minutes to save now. If I go to my browser it is instant. This is a dealbreaker after paying, and being a user for over 10 years.
Clearing the cache seems to have worked for fixing my "thumbnails only" issue. Great support guys, thank you!
Been using this app since 2012 and the new update has regressed the "Save To Device" option. It now saves a blank image that doesn't appear until after 1-2 mins. Feels very archaic and dial-up like now.
Updating my review to reflect the recent fix to v.redd.it links. Out of every app on my phone this one is probably my most used, and in all that time I have nothing negative to say about it. Deserves the 5/5 with all the features it gives and frequent updates. Would recommend. E: Editing review in the hopes that the app stops asking me to leave a review.....
While searching my email, I stumbled on receipt for buying this app back in 2013. So, for almost a decade I've been using this app and felt I should drop a review. No software is perfect but BaconReader has been a smooth sailing so far. I've tried few reddit apps over the years but this is the only UI I prefer. Very simple & lets you focus on reading and doing crucial actions like voting, navigation etc with ease. The only thing I miss is the chat feature. Don't know if it's possible though.
Bacon reader has been my go to for years to browse reddit in my phone. And the one app that I always recommend to my friends. But I simply cannot endorse an app that has ads that play sound as you scroll past, with no options to disable the sound. I understand the necessity for advertisements within a free app. But not being able to quietly browse through the app anymore. Is an immediate uninstall. I'll find elsewhere to browse reddit. A shame really, you guys had it right for so long.
Initial issue resolved. Usually works well. Sometimes has difficulty loading some post formats.
Even on huge, the text is too small. Ads everywhere, sickening.
I've been using BaconReader for longer than I've even had a reddit account. It has had steady updates for over a decade, reasonable price to remove ads, and absolutely fantastic user experience. I barley even use Reddit on desktop anymore, because of BaconReader. I'd say more, but there's a character limit. 10/10 with rice.
Just got the scare of my life as an in-app ad played random music at full blast out of my phone. Ads that make noise unexpectedly are the quickest way to make me uninstall your app. Other than that I like it.
I purchased the premium version many years ago and they must have changed their premium app because I can no longer download it. I contacted their support and they were of no help. Buyer beware they will do nothing to help you.
I've used the premium version of this app for years. It is absolutely the best app for reddit. Easy to use, looks good and runs smoothly. However for the first time since I've started using it, this current version seems unstable. It takes a long time to open the app, sometimes gifs or videos don't load and even the comments sometimes do not load even though the post did. I'm sure the devs will fix these issues soon but right now it is not super nice.
Easy to use, filter and search without over complicating it.
I'm now getting ads that auto-click when I'm scrolling. I'm not clicking on them. If I put my finger on the ad to scroll then it instantly opens the link to the ad. This isn't how my phone works with any other app. This only started happening in the last few months. I will update back to 5 stars if this is fixed. Alternatively, if there was an option to report an ad and then not see any more of those specific ads, that would mostly fix the problem.
Used this app for years, but having crypto ads, which are bad enough, but ones that play obnoxious music?? I understand you need ads but I'm not going to be bullied into buying a premium version via horrible adverts.
I've been using BaconReader for close to 10 years now, it's my primary means of browsing reddit, and I greatly prefer it over other reddit apps. That being said, I purchased the premium version back in 2019, which no longer exists. There's a new premium version that's since released. I understand when services disappear or old versions phase out, but from what I can tell, instead of rolling the old premium into the new one, the developers just pocketed my money and called it a day.
