Formed in 1949, and nurtured over the years to its present heights by the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his worthy daughter Sheikh Hasina, the party stands for democracy, nationalism, socialism and secularism. The party has been at the forefront of all major national struggles and movements of the nation and country, including the Language Movement, Liberation War and the fight for democracy. It stands for the people, especially its disadvantaged and marginalized segments, and has made a name for itself for taking Bangladesh in a progressive direction over the years. Standing as a bulwark against regressive ideas, terrorism and extremism, Bangladesh Awami League not only represents the best of our past, but also the hopes and aspirations for an optimistic future of the country.
