Belo Horizonte, or BH, is the capital of Minas Gerais and has almost two and a half million inhabitants. The city has a dynamic economy, and is among the top five cities with the highest GDP in Brazil. It is known as the world capital for “botecos,” the Brazilian version of a pub, and has a thriving nightlife. It also has important international museums and beautiful urban parks.
Whoever visits BH should visit the Minerão Stadium, where the most famous soccer match in Minas Gerais takes place, Cruzeiro v. Atlético Mineiro. As far as religious sights go, the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi is famous for its architecture, designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, and the Portinari murals on its walls.
