About Belo Horizonte:

Belo Horizonte, or BH, is the capital of Minas Gerais and has almost two and a half million inhabitants. The city has a dynamic economy, and is among the top five cities with the highest GDP in Brazil. It is known as the world capital for “botecos,” the Brazilian version of a pub, and has a thriving nightlife. It also has important international museums and beautiful urban parks.

Whoever visits BH should visit the Minerão Stadium, where the most famous soccer match in Minas Gerais takes place, Cruzeiro v. Atlético Mineiro. As far as religious sights go, the Church of Saint Francis of Assisi is famous for its architecture, designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, and the Portinari murals on its walls. The beautiful Liberty Palace is the seat of the state government. For those who want to enjoy a little nature, a visit to Mangabeiras Park to watch a sunset is a good choice.

BH also has a few malls for all preferences and price ranges. The neighborhood Barro Preto is the best place to buy clothes and shoes at good prices. If you’re looking for artisans, head to the Afonso Pena fair on Sunday mornings. The Central Market has more consumable goods, like cachaça and cheese.

As the boteco capital, BH features great bars with great bar food throughout the entire city. The botecos are very traditional, and the Boteco Food Festival annually gives out awards to the places with the best appetizers. Try some of the typical local dishes, which many say are the most delicious in all of Brazil. If you prefer something more sophisticated, you will easily find some of the best restaurants in Brazil as well.

Belo Horizonte has a subway, but the lines don’t serve the most popular tourist spots. The bus is the best way to get around, and smartphone apps can track the preferred rounds. The taxi system is also one of the best in Latin America, and on the BHTrans website, you can calculate the fairs. A tip: the airport has a bus line called “Conexão” which will take you downtown without any stops. Because the Confins airport is over 40 kilometers away, the bus is recommended because taxi rides can be over 100 reals. Renting a car offers more freedom and comfort, but the roads and geography can be difficult for a visitor.

Crime rates in BH are similar to other major Brazilian cities. You should avoid dark and deserted places, especially at night, and don’t show off flashy items. Keep you valuables in sight to avoid pickpockets and thieves.
