Bhagavad Gita

The Gita is acknowledged to be one of the profoundest books of Indian spirituality and yet, in India itself, there is no unanimity of view about the real message of the Gita. There are innumerable commentaries, from ancient times to the modern, all attempting to reveal the hidden secret, but often coming to not only divergent but even contradictory conclusions. Amongst them all, there is one commentary which we believe stands out because of the manner in which it has been able to enter into the spirit of the Gita and to relive its spiritual essence and, while denying none, it is able to look at the truth behind each of the various interpretations of the Gita with a deeper insight.
That work is “Essays on the Gita” by Sri Aurobindo.

In the words of the great scholar Kapali Sastriar, “It constitutes a standing monument of his luminous contribution to the literature extant on the subject. It enters into an elaborate discussion of the many lines of philosophic thought with their practical bearing on life that are dealt with in the Gita and vividly brings to light the great synthesis arrived at therein of the three major paths of yoga, viz., jnana, bhakti and karma — the lines of knowledge, devotion and action.”

Our purpose in preparing this app is to present the Gita in the light of Sri Aurobindo, based on his commentaries.

This app is meant for the spiritual seeker who turns to the Gita for the Light to illumine his path and for the strength to follow it. It is meant for the person with a philosophical bent of mind who would like to understand its many-sided thought and rich synthesis. It is meant for the one who would like to enter deep into the spirit of Indian culture and it is also meant to help the sincere scholar in his search.

The app therefore contains a variety of material, presented in a manner which is easily accessible and usable. It contains the following sections:

1. The entire text of the Gita. The verses are given both in Devanagari and Roman transliteration followed by English translation, anvaya (the prose-order of the Sanskrit words) and word-by-word meaning.

2. The entire text of the “Essays on the Gita” by Sri Aurobindo, which forms volume 19 of the Complete Works of Sri Aurobindo, published by the Sri Aurobindo Ashram Trust, Pondicherry. It also contains an edited version of the English translation of Sri Aurobindo's Bengali writings on the Gita, and a few more writings of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother on the Gita. A brief life-sketch of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother have also been given here.

3. Several subsections providing specific information:

a. Chapter Outline: A verse-wise synopsis of all the 18 chapters of the Gita.

b. Chapter Summary: Summarises each chapter of the Gita.

c. Memorable Lines from the Gita: 80 frequently quoted lines from the Gita.

d. Names of Sri Krishna: Explains all 40 names of Sri Krishna appearing in the Gita.

e. Names of Arjuna: Explains all 22 names of Arjuna appearing in the Gita.

f. Arjuna’s Queries: A list of all the questions asked by Arjuna in the Gita.

g. Subject index: This covers almost all the important concepts or topics occurring in the Gita, listed alphabetically.

h. Pada or Quarter-verse index: This lists all the padas or quarter-verses of the Gita in Devanagari script according to the Devanagari alphabetical order. The same list is also given in Roman script following the Roman alphabetical order.

i. The Mahabharata: The Gita is a part of the epic Mahabharata. Therefore the main story of the Mahabharata has been given in brief.

j. Sri Krishna: Sri Krishna is the Divine Teacher in the Gita. The story of his life and a few passages from Sri Aurobindo and the Mother have been included here.

There should be an option to play the entire work continuously. Each feature should be accessible from any other feature instead of having to go thru home. The main features should be accessible through touch icons, rather than through menu items. Having said that, it's probably the most appropriate app on Gita that I've found for my purposes. Addition of just the meanings of the shlokas in writing in other languages, one of which could be chosen as an option, would add immense value, I believe

It's a great app, but please fix the audio player. When you go to the next verse, the player lags. Maybe you can consider giving download option for all audio verses so it remains in the system and doesn't lag.

Great app. Made with lot of love for the subject and knowledge. Minor technical issues exists, can not type the letter य using the app's keyboard in Sanskrit Dictionary. य is printed as च. Key mapping is wrong.

5 star. Absolutely amazing app. Simple to use. Informative. Intuitive. A must have for everyone who needs to know the Gita in its true essence. Sri Aurobindo expounds on the basis of realization rather than a mental idea or thought.

This is easily one of the best Bhagavad Gita apps available online. The only downside is there is no option to save/bookmark your favourite shlokas. Please add this feature. I absolutely love this app.

This is perhaps the best app available on the immortal spiritual classic of Bhagavad-Gita. The Gita has been hailed as one of the greatest self development books produced by mankind and as a sure guide for self realisation. The beauty of this app is that it gives us the Sanskrit language audio and text of the classic together with its meaning in English and detailed explanation in the form of insightful essays by the great sage Sri Aurobindo. Heartfelt thanks !

Devnagari keyboard is now ok. In sixth adhyaya noticed mismatch of shloka and it's tataparya, padartha and translation. Similar mistakes could be in other chapters also. This is very good app. Request developer to give email address for bug reporting from within the app.

With this app, search for any app on bhagavad gita is over, as there can't be any better than this. It has all everything I wanted. It would have been even better if there were more words of commentary and interpretation by Sri Aurobindo.

I'm a student of Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education. I'm just overjoyed by the content in here! I can learn Sanskrit anytime, anywhere & at my pace, and most importantly read Sri Aurobindo's translation & more that he has imparted. Though the dictionary is buggy, doesn't delete if mistyped a letter.
