The Old Testament deals mainly with the relationship between God and the nation of Israel. The Pentateuch deals with the creation of the nation of Israel and God establishing a covenant-based relationship with Israel. Historical books tell the story of Israel, its victories and successes, as well as its defeats and failures. The poetic books give us a more intimate perspective on God’s relationship with Israel, and his yearning to receive the worship and obedience of his people. The prophetic books are God's call to Israel to turn its people away from idolatry and unfaithfulness and to return to a relationship of obedience and spiritual faithfulness.
Instead of the Old Testament, the "First Testament" might be a better title. The term "old" refers to something "old-fashioned" or "out of date", which is far from true.
The New Testament is subdivided into five sections: the Gospels (from Matthew to John), the historical section (the book of Acts of the Apostles), the Pauline Epistles (from Romans to Philemon), the General Epistles (from Hebrews to Jude) , and prophecy (the Book of Revelation). The New Testament was written between 45 and 95 AD, in the Greek Koinè dialect (ancient Greek, spoken in the time of the first century AD).
The Gospels give us four different accounts (without being contradictory) of the birth, life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Gospels present Jesus as the promised Old Testament Messiah, and lay the foundations for the teaching developed in the rest of the New Testament. The Book of Acts recounts the works of the Apostles of Jesus, the men Jesus sent to the world to proclaim the Gospel of salvation. They tell us about the beginning of the Church and its rapid growth during the first century AD. The Pauline Epistles, (written by the Apostle Paul), are letters addressed to specific churches, teaching official Christian doctrine, and the practice that should follow that doctrine. The General Epistles conclude the Pauline Epistles with complementary teaching and practice. The book of Revelation prophesies of the events that will take place at the end of time.
