BPM-Detector

New!
Unlike the others, this app actually LISTENS to the music using the phone's on-board microphone. Simply start the app, and the BPM is updated once every seven seconds. The app works best with music that has a strong beat.

Select either 60-120 BPM or 100-200 BPM to get estimates in those ranges.

Choose from either the modern or old-fashioned skin.

Switch the app into "nerd mode" to have a look under the hood. Watch as a spectrogram is generated in real-time (choose color or black & white). Below the spectrogram you will see the rate of energy change of the music. Peaks represent beats or other musically significant events. Once every seven seconds, the bottom of the screen displays a chart with the candidate beats per minute. The largest values are the most likely.

Note that the app also works on music without a strong beat, but you may have to snap your fingers, clap, or tap on the screen to the music to help it register energy transitions correctly.

For fun, try beatboxing while running the app!

It all works great but it would be nice if you could store it on the SD disk (internal memory) instead of only to phone memory. You app makers need to make your apps that way because these phones barely have enough indigenous memory to support all the crap that they come with.

My friend and I use different BPM apps. This one gives a different BPM than the others... And its wrong. I don't know if the phone could effect this, the version, IDK. But this app simply does not work properly. My phone: HTC one vx, Jelly Bean

It doesn't work very well for me, probably because of my instruments (fiddle, flute, accordion) that don't usually have the "strong beat" that the description recommends. I found that it spent most of its time trying to figure out my speed, would display a number, and then erase it quickly. The number also jumped around wildly. I tried it out with a few friends, and while they agreed that I was playing with a clear rhythm, my (android) phone wasn't very good at getting the beat right. It worked pretty will with a friend's guitar, though, and I also tried it with my mandolin, which worked. But if you have a "smooth" instrument, you probably won't find it very useful. And it does use a lot of battery.

Played with it for a few minutes. Couldn't figure out how to access the menu or settings. I wanted to try out the nerd mode to understand why it was getting random readings unrelated to what I thought I could hear, but I could not figure out how to do that. The only control I found was to toggle between two BPM ranges, but that didn't seem to do much. Even with no music around, it seems to detect random BPMs. Confused. Perhaps following more of the standard Google Design Principles (or Material Design) would make things easier to understand.

Trying to learn tremolo picking. The spectrogram and amplitude graph let me quantitatively see how uniform my tone is.

Sorry guys, great idea but the app seems to pickup sounds other than beats and thinks they're beats. New Order - Tutti Frutti 177bpm according to your app. I don't know the actual bpm for the song but 177 is wildly out.

Beat measurement is a tricky thing to automate. It gets basic beats right. But it takes long and sometimes jump around

it does what it is supposed to do, and additionally can show a full spectrogram upon request. Nice example of an app which is both simple and - if you want - detailed nerdy.

I tried touching the app using an thick cloth and still it gives an pulse which is fluctuating (the call was kept on my desk)....

It may work well for some music, but shows wildly different bpm every few seconds during the same song. Back to tapping.

Great app, works well for lots of varied music. Not sure why the original version was deprecated and replaced with this one instead of being updated but oh well...

Not totally accurate but good enough for what I wanted to use it for. Gives a general idea of the bpm. Very useful.

I am using this on every dancefloor to verify that the dj is too slow again ;)

Might not be perfect, but good for closing in on a bpm for a starting point.

It is a very accurate app. We used it today and it actually helped us quite a lot. Kudos to the developers for this. Great job :)

Thanks to this amazing app I discovered that my kitchen tap drips at 140bpm! Amazing insights :)

The new edition of this app is a big improvement over the original: more accurate and gives the correct beat, provided you correctly set the range. As always, much better than other apps that require you to tap the beat to get a reading.

Keeps changing back and forth and sometimes doesn't even give a bpm.

I will give it 5 stars when it can go 2 decimal places ;) thanks for your work on this. Very useful!

Does exactly what you'd expect. Highly accurate for not being a precision tool!

I use this to make sure that Trance DJs are playing at 138 bpm or more. :-P

Clapping fingers at rate <60 shows 120 (no other sound at all).

The numbers are completely random. The application uses to microphone to gather data.

Works pretty well especially for a free app, has been on point or very close every time

Great tool for beginners to use while learning how to match beats, or pros who are inebriated and/or distracted while checking out some booty in da club! Thanks!!
