Briar

Briar is a messaging app designed for activists, journalists, and anyone else who needs a safe, easy and robust way to communicate. Unlike traditional messaging apps, Briar doesn't rely on a central server - messages are synchronized directly between the users' devices. If the internet's down, Briar can sync via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, keeping the information flowing in a crisis. If the internet's up, Briar can sync via the Tor network, protecting users and their relationships from surveillance.

I would like to see a pop-up chat head. If I'm not looking at the screen I will miss the flash notification across the top. I have missed a reply for hours. I like adding the contact without using my phone number. I was using TextNow and Text free but the constant ads drove me crazy! I think this is a good app.

Shows great potential. But needs ability to add photos (and video) in Forum, Blogs as well, to have any chance of mass adoption. Other things like voice/video chatting aren't so important as there are other apps for live chat. But images/video clips are absolutely necessary in the 21st century for an offline communication and information platform.

All features of this app looks awesome. I imagine it would be a great app to connect with friends and families. But I would really love to see some features that allows me to connect with strangers. Also, it seems this app does not support voice chat and video chat. Those would be really nice features if the developers can add them.

Useless app, doesn't work offline, drains battery life, a lot of features are still not available....... It's only wastage of storage and nothing else and lastly it's not worth it

This app is perfect for my family with one exception. When I try to use it with the Windows 'Your Phone' app, I just get a black screen. All other cell apps work fine when used remotely through 'Your Phone'. We use it within our family because covid brought the kids back from college and they are living in separate trailers on our property for the short term. Briar lets us all communicate even when internet or power goes down. It is a very polished chat application.

Bluetooth chat. One of the top three for communication with your kid without cell service. +Element and Threema. Skip phone number, refuse access to contacts, after installation remove access to Gmail, Chrome, and YouTube afterward. Safe kid. Plenty of offline video games available and offline educational options.

Thank you for the great app and ongoing maintenance. One configuration I would like to have is to be able to disable the Briar password.

Great app that allows for communications with an ad hoc system. It is useful in areas where commmuncation is degraded, limited, or non-existent by linking users together via Bluetooth. It's a very handy feature.

Best feature: can send app to another phone directly without internet using the phone's Hotspot!!! Biggest deficiency: it's an android only app as far as I can tell; Mesh network features work well.

It's a while since I last had Briar installed, now appears to be a useful high security message app. On one device (Android 7.0.0), it uses a worrying amount of battery (17%) when only lightly used, on other devices (7.1.1 & 5.0) no appreciable battery drain - not sure if this is significant, might be due to different device setups. Would like to see the ability to delete messages, and to send encrypted attachments.

Underrated secure messaging application, taking something good (Tor) and applying it to something many are desperately in need for (private and discrete contacting in dangerous situations) and making something better than the sum of its parts. Stability may be a bit off, but that aside, security and privacy are what matters for those who download the app. I'd give 10 stars if possible.

This is probably one of the best messaging apps ever. I didn't even know a messaging app ever existed without using data . I installed this app into two phones and turned off Wi-Fi off for both of them and only left Bluetooth on. The app worked perfectly and no delayed text messages. I never knew that text messaging apps existed without ever having to use data or a Wi-Fi connection. I'm glad this technology exists because this would be very good in an emergency situations. Love this technology.

One of the few apps that seemed to work without an internet connection, some small issues that I found: unable to send video or pictures and additionally you can only add people who you are physically in contact with, in a emergency their maybe other people trapped or folks you want to communicate with who are in the area but you can't physically meet. Overall however seems to do does basic communication okay

I uninstalled the app after I noticed it inserts a non-removable notification in the notifications feed. Will try again next year.

Suspiciously, the app rapidly drains battery so fast. Even in WiFi mode only. Battery won't last 3-4 hours with this app. This issue render the app to the point as almost useless to have, to communicate. If anyone says because there's no server, that doesn't make sense. Talkie do better with battery on WiFi.

Secure but lacks basic necessary features. Clean, mess free interface with low resource demand. Consistent connections over p2p. Lots of nice features like blogs and groups. However, there is no way to back up your identity. There is no ability to share photos or files rendering the adoption of this tool problematic to the average user.

It will be great app if it allows video file to be sent, then it will also act file sharing app via local wifi connection, then we we will not need separate app to share file like video and documents accross device.

app severely and shockingly power exhaustive. drains battery faster than what it can charge in background. please fix. this is not okay. i have to uninstall app due to this issue.

JG. S. Mar 9, 2021

Not sure but it seems as if this app uses a little too much battery/ram? Also, not allowing touches with overlays active? Better to have an option to disable that. Being able to send files is sort of important(please add). Works flawlessly(so far) without google play services(awesome, thank you).Plans for a Linux pc version? Thanks for everything. Appreciate it all. Also, this app works flawlessly without google play services. Thank you for that.

I have tried to get people to participate with me and have Briar in case we plunge into a new dark age and are severely restricted with thought and speech. Briar allows big groups to have social media, blogs, chatting and all encrypted and can be done without wifi, with wifi, through TOR!! Bluetooth too. Briar uses uses the connection open to use or you can turn off connections. Contacts shared by encryption through blutooth too. A community online without need for snooping connections!

Love this app. enable bluetooth messaging by going to settings..whenever contacts are nearby (this should be default). This app could use bluetooth to bluetooth mesh hopping. Instead it uses forums to sync whenever you come into range . takes 1to3min to refind each other if you lose contact.hope it was just the devices.ill keep testing

Can you use the without wifi or internet and bluetooth

Дми. Х. Aug 7, 2020

Guys, great app, thank you from Belarus:) Few moments I've yet noticed: 1. You should rethink the messages times. I mean these "sent 2 minutes ago" under each message. I would do this like that: add a real time, when sender sent this message (f.e. on the left of message bubble) and a real time when receiver got this message (on the right) 2. Maybe it would be great if you add the way of connection to each user ( either bluetooth or wifi) 3. Please, remove the transition animations:D

From a journalist's point of view. Good idea. Lacks image and basic textstyles (Bold/italics etc) to be of use. No error messages on connection problems. This doesn't help to solve the problem. Therefore a good starting point.

Only works via Bluetooth. "Wifi" and "internet" connections do not work. Looses messages.

Installed on a phone and a wifi tablet. Turned off wifi routers at home and disabled mobile data on the phone. Didn't work at all. Tried cycling bluetooth and wifi on both devices, still nothing. GalaxyS9 and ASUS Z500. Great idea, failed implementation in my case. Two stars because it at least works with internet connection, with man in the middle.
