Unlike Clipper, you can buy a ticket instantly, don't have to tag off, and can't accidentally tap twice. The five star rating mostly reflects how utterly awful Clipper is, but this app's ticket purchasing is convenient and well designed. It doesn't have good schedule information or trip planning but CaltrainDroid already has that covered.
Thought I was buying a ticket in advance for when I needed it. Sunday night for a trip Monday morning. Rather than storing the ticket for use the ticket became active right away for a 4 hour window when the trip I wanted doesn't even run. Waste of money since app orders are non refundable. Now I have to buy another ticket. Totally second rate app.
Worst mobile ticketing app. Unlike NY MTA, NJ Transit, and Chicago Ventra (all of which I use), Caltrain does not let you buy tickets in advance and activate later. So it doesn't work offline and doesn't let you bundle purchases. There was a one-month delay in support for Android 9. Very disappointing.
This app is powered by transitsherpa, just like the Muni app. It works well. You do need to register and provide your personal information, but I'm comfortable doing that as I already have for registering my clipper card. I like that it doesn't need to be reloaded like clipper and you don't have to tag off.
it is convenient and I don't have to stand in line. however, sometimes it doesn't work and I've gotten tickets twice because the app failed as I was boarding the train and there's no time to get a paper ticket. I would try to open app for minutes, it wouldn't open and I've been given a citation
You need to create an account and give up your information (name, email, phone numer) to be able to purchase tickets. There is no direct Credit Card, PayPal or Google Pay Options. I personally find tgis very annoying. One more outlet and password to keep an eye open for.
Easy to use and buy tickets. I do recommend buying your ticket at least right before jumping on the train because they can tell and will give you a ticket! I wish they would feed the schedule into the app vs bringing me to the Caltrain site which is terrible enough on its own.
This app is an unmitigated failure. I cannot pay for my ride using a credit card. I cannot pay for my ride with PayPal. It crashes anytime I switch apps to autofill passwords. There are more good Android developers in this town than anywhere. Find one.
The app doesn't really have time tables. It has a link to the web time table. So you can log in, wait for the app to load, navigate to information, then click on timetable, then it will load an internet browser to pull up the time table. Just bookmark the timetable on your mobile phone and save yourself the aggravation.
Great to have a way to pay for tickets on mobile, however the app itself could do a better job of rendering train schedules instead of linking to the Caltrain website. It would be great if they could integrate the functions not other apps in terms of train schedule presentation.
When the app works its's great, but 50% of the time I open it, it freezes - and the only way to back out is to restart my phone. The app then works properly when restarted (yes I keep the app updated).
How did Caltrain make this app worse? My main use cases are: 1) When is the next train at station X? 2) What train do I take to get some place by some time? Instead of a clean mobile interface to answer these questions, you have a crappy web browser that just takes you to Caltrain's non-mobile website (tiny text, way too wide). I have a web browser for that. I expect more out of a dedicated app.
its great for the most part. Way better than the past version of the app that you barely can do anything. need to incorporate schedules and real time status for delays for all in one app
Great app! An essential if you take caltrain. You can purchase tickets and find the timetable easily. I do wish they stored tickets. I hate worrying and rushing to buy a ticket as the train arrives.
What a joke. Got a citation because the app wouldnt show that I had purchased my ticket. To make matters worse, after I'm cited I check my mail and see that I was charged twice for the ticket I allegedly hadn't purchased. Now i have to waste my time appealing the fine, which doesnt even appear on their other site yet and I'll probably lose anyway. You keep raising the fares but all we get are crappy apps that don't work for consistently late trains that are overcrowded and kill people regularly.
it does what it's supposed to do exceptionall well and fast - buy tickets. would be great if there was a way to setup monthly pass on the card and autoload, but not complaining.
Looking up the timetable is a less than mediocre experience. Would highly recommend the Caltrain app by Interprone if you just want to know the schedule in an easy to use format.
they need to show a time table! nothing brings me more comfort than seeing whats the next train station. it would also be nice if the app could update delays in real time :( not good enough compared to other options
App keeps freezing up & not opening. It just stays on the red screen :( ...makes it difficult to buy & show tickets.
Simple. Saves past fares you've purchased. I wish it didn't link to the caltrain website for things like maps and timetables though. Would be nice to have those in app.
This is a joke in terms of app quality & functionality. I gave it the benefit of the doubt just to experience the official Caltrain app - a genuine disappointment, for sure. Use Caltrain Droid (for schedules at least). Can't speak to the ticketing functionality in the app but that is so terrible via ClipperCard / IRL, I can't see it being any better. Feel free to contact me if you need product/UX help.
Too many clicks, you should provide an option that enables a default payment option if I want it. Wheres my Clipper card option? You realize many phones can read the NFC.... Also, why can't we get notifications that the train is late via this app?
Very simple (schedules + daily tickets + daily parking). I'd totally shred my Clipper card if it allowed purchase of monthly passes + parking, but it's a solid, working, and bug-free (so far) MVP!
UI needs further adjustments. Currently getting a simple receipt is very difficult as you have to use the mobile browser and not the app.
If you're looking for the Caltrain timetable, this isn't the app. Takes you to a pinch and zoom webview. Hope they change that in future versions.
Works fine for buying tickets when you're in a rush. App could have more features for sure and pull data more elegantly but it does not deserve all the hate.
Really great app!!!! For whenever you don't have your clipper card with you or if you don't have time to head to your nearest Walgreens to reload your card. Super easy to use.
Useful app (only one that let's you buy caltrain tickets) but it's strangely clunky in places. There's no option to consult train schedules, which is bizarre. Purchasing tickets with Google Pay also requires 4-6 taps from the checkout screen. It asks me to re-select payment method from the menu every single time. Purchases are also laggy with no progress indication - I can see how this can lead to duplicate ticket purchases as others reviewers mentioned. Frustrating.
