Calvin's Bible Commentaries

One of the most influential bible scholars of all time, John Calvin, although controversial, is a force to be reckoned with. His commentaries reflect an incredible command of the Scriptures, as he sought to integrate the entirety of its teaching by combining a solid exegetical method with a pastoral insight that is often neglected in commentaries today.
Calvin strikes a balance between passion and restraint, often infusing his writing with a distinct quality of controlled intensity. Scholars now recognize Calvin as above all else a teacher. He sought to open the Word of God in scripture to the common people from whom, he believed, the Bible had been withheld by the scholastics, monks and priests of the Roman church. By recapturing scripture's simple, genuine and natural sense, Calvin returned scripture to its rightful place in the church. His sole object as a teacher was "to lay down a pathway to the reading of sacred Scripture for the simple and uneducated."
John Calvin (Middle French: Jean Cauvin; 10 July 1509 -
- 27 May 1564) was an influential French theologian and pastor during the Protestant Reformation. He was a principal figure in the development of the system of Christian theology later called Calvinism. Originally trained as a humanist lawyer, he broke from the Roman Catholic Church around 1530. After religious tensions provoked a violent uprising against Protestants in France, Calvin fled to Basel, Switzerland, where in 1536 he published the first edition of his seminal work Institutes of the Christian Religion.
Calvin was a tireless polemic and apologetic writer who generated much controversy. He also exchanged cordial and supportive letters with many reformers including Philipp Melanchthon and Heinrich Bullinger. In addition to the Institutes, he wrote commentaries on most books of the Bible as well as theological treatises and confessional documents, and he regularly gave sermons throughout the week in Geneva. Calvin was influenced by the Augustinian tradition, which led him to expound the doctrine of predestination and the absolute sovereignty of God in salvation.
Calvin's writing and preachings provided the seeds for the branch of theology that bears his name. The Presbyterian and other Reformed churches, which look to Calvin as a chief expositor of their beliefs, have spread throughout the world. Calvin's thought exerted considerable influence over major religious figures and entire religious movements, such as Puritanism, and some political historians have argued that his ideas have contributed to the rise of capitalism, individualism, and representative democracy in the West.

More than awesome app. It is easy to use! I like how you can swipe your figure on the screen to go to the next page without exiting the text your are studying. I use this app frequently as I prepare my sermons. Best Calvin commentary app I have tried.
Apart from my Bible apps, this is the best app on my phone! I can't recommend it highly enough. The fact that every single Bible commentary written by John Calvin can be accessed so easily and free of charge is absolutely amazing! I highly recommend this app to anyone who wants to grow in there understanding of the Bible. It is also a powerful tool to use when preparing to teach or preach from the Bible. I'd love to see every Christian download and use this app regularly.
I have Calvin's commentary in book form and use it daily for my devotion. The app is handy for when I travel I don't have to bring my books. Calvin was one of the greatest theologians wish we had more like him to day. Another great theologian is Wilhelmus A Brakel who wrote the Christians reasonable service well worth reading.
This app is great it does everything specified.it is really helpful and an essential for anyone who wanta to understand the Bible more it has really been a blessing and its quick to navigate compared to having the actual books.
Excellent..but lacks various books, no fault of the app though.. I think Calvin died before he could complete them. Romans 8:28 all things work together for good for those who love God and are called according to his purpose May God give us all clear discernment of His perfect will for our lives and keep us from procrastination, Also, may HE galvanize, fill us with passion for action to do His will and spread the word, in lock step by being an example by obeying HIS word. Good app. I have purchased the no add version and it is good. The navigation in the commentary section needs some improvement, but all together it is a good app.
Very convenient to have the beauty and wisdom of Calvin's commentary so handy at your fingertips. The easy pop-up Bible references are a good help too, adding to the force of Calvin's reasoning.

One of the best Bible commentaries app. I used it a lot as one of the study reference. The other advantage, is verse by verse commentary, which helps in focus on the context and make it possible to formulate critical opinion and questioning your own believe and faith.
I love the many translations, it helps me to get a clearer picture of what the intent of the original word was intended to convey.
John Calvin's commentaries are a great read anyway, but having them in a format like this is even better. I highly recommend this for all who love God and who desire a faithful presentation of His truth...
This app didn't have all the Books in the Bible. There are some ommitted books that are needed to be added. Thannks. More Grace

None of the commentary is missing. Calvin simply never got around to writing a commentary on a few books.
with the exception of ads, this commentary has been so helpful for my studies and growth in Christ Jesus.

Easy to use and invaluable!
This app is useful (I have the paid version and the printed books). But in this app, many parts are missing. In the commentary on Daniel, for example, Calvin's preface and prayer at the end of each lecture are missing. That is unfortunate since they provide a useful insight into his application of the text. Quite a few paragraphs are missing. Daniel 9:11 is missing. Typos need fixing too - some are so bad the word is not obvious. Some cross-references are wrong. Many footnotes are missing.
