CamSextant

CamSextant allows measuring celestial objects altitudes with your phone,
similar to a marine sextant. The app uses the phone sensors, camera and GPS.
Point the phone to a celestial object and capture the name, altitude and time
for celestial navigation calculations.

You can calibrate the sextant index, by reading the sea horizon altitude.

On screen celestial objects (Sun, Moon, 4 planets and 150 stars).
CamSextant has perpetual Nautical Almanac.
Best way to identify navigation stars and planets.

This version calculates the Deltas for the each altitude reading,
and the Astronomical Position (for two or more sights).

If you have a marine sextant at hand, you can correct the phone readings with it and get some real celnav work done.

Nice for celestial navigation training. even without a marine sextant.

A great app for your survival toolkit. Also very useful for radio enthusiasts to measure height of objects on the horizon to establish your maximal possible transmission range.

I really like this app but the problem is that the star map is off and most of the time it misidentifies the star that you are shooting. I think it would be quite accurate if not for that.

Me and boys were driving on the highway and wondering how high the clouds. we realized if we only had the angle to the clouds and the distance to right under it we would have enough information to estimate it. It worked! To verify we used the Freedom Tower, and we got the answer within 200 feet. Very impressive.

Confusing. Even after using built-in GPS on the phone, the sun doesn't match position.

Why does such a simple app runnat 3 fps? Hell, the one that shows the stars and the one that shows mountain ranges runs 20 times faster. Quite literally.
