Very suspicious that the app wants access to my accounts. It works but there's definitely room for improvement. I like that it does include Mandarin but Cantonese should be prioritized and not in random order mixed in with Mandarin words that aren't used in the common vernacular. The app also crashed the first time I used it so it may not be stable. Also, some kind of handwriting input option should be available and prompted for, otherwise, user can't input Chinese writing w/o having to download
Love that this app does English-Canto translation!!! So many apps out there for Mandarin but not Canto. While the app isn't perfect (every once in a while, a pronunciation is off), majority of the time the pronunciations are accurate. Would love to see the vocabulary bank be expanded for even more words, especially relating to medical, human anatomy, and other useful vocabulary for daily life. Thank you to those who make this app possible!!!
A great resource, but with one big problem. The English text-to-speech tool the app uses is less than accurate, to say the least. For instance, the audio clip for the name Fang On Sang is read aloud as "FAYng AWn SAYng". It also pronounces Chan like it rhymes with 'man'. But other than this, it's an easy to use tool with a vast database.
Really extensive database for translating between Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. It helps me as I'm a Canadian born Chinese who needs help translating for family members often, so it bridges those gaps for certain specialty words. I would suggest improving the UI, or even adding things such as Word of the Day to make the app more interactive and educational.
Good app. It has the words I am looking for most of the time. I like how it also pairs the character you ask for with other characters, so i can see how the character can be used. There are, once in a while, discrepancies between the app's suggested pronunciations and the proninciatons suggested by my 商務詞典. Not sure which is correct.
can type in english, traditional or simplified chinese input. output contains the traditional and simplified characters and english translations. I like how there's a lot of related words and in the term itself the phonetics with the number system is present. However I would like the cantonese pronunciations to be fixed as many of them are not accurate (especially the cantonese 6th sound).I would give it a 5 star when that is fixed.
It exceeded my expectations, as someone who originally knew how to speak basic communicative Cantonese (with very basic knowledge of Chinese) and would like to expand my vocabulary, it's a good app. The translation from English to Cantonese is not as good so you might have to go find out the Chinese form before getting to the Cantonese. However, expect for certain longer phrases, the Cantonese pronunciation is also on point. I would give it a 4.5
Been using for few days. I am American born Chinese, and I use this to help converse with my parents (primarily speaks Cantonese). I like the range of vocabulary. I like that it translates to Cantonese and Mandarin, and gives the pinyin. I'm not giving 5 stars because it runs kinda slow, and sometimes it freezes and crashes.
As a learner it's probably the best canto/English dictionary app I've found, however it tends to prioritise sentences over individual characters, and I can't seem to see any logic in why. As an example, if I search for 叫 (to call/order/ask), 亂叫 (to rudely shout) is the top result.
I like the app but some errors occur whenever Im using this app; some words cannot be translated properly or it just doesn't give you any translation at all, even though there is a proper word/character for it ( I live in Hk for almost 4 years now,so I know)and etc..I really hope you can fix this errors soon.
I think overall this app isn't so good. It should have as many or more, or better features than Pleco. Please fix it. And also, try to install a feature where the user can change the colour of the app to their own preference. Thank you.
Like most ABC I'd forgotten a lot of my Cantonese, both spoken and written. This App helps me a great deal in relearning what I'd lost. It will recognize written English and Chinese, and translate accordingly. It also lists additionally suggested phrases and sentences. I like the history figure to review what Id searched; and best of all, a favorite figure to add words and phrases to your favorite list for instant recall.
Works very well! They don't have a handwriting option in the app but if you download a different chinese input keyboard it's a easy fix. Very helpful reference as it can pronounce the words in cantonese and manderin.
The only setback is loading translation results for long time(approx. 10 seconds) in older smartphones(before 2016's devices), all other aspects are excellent, it helps me even discover unfamiliar words in my own native language - Cantonese.
Very useful app. Having both Cantonese and Mandarin pronunciation and traditional and simplified characters is particularly helpful. Only downside is that the app hesitates occasionally.
You can't distinguish between which language you're translating from. Sometimes it will not even show a translation of a word I typed in English and just translates things how it wants by the similarity of the sound. If I type "she" or "it", it won't translate that word. It will show words that sound similar in Cant/Mand or Eng words with that as part of the word, like it will show "shell" or "suitcase", which makes no sense. I know they don't translate in the same way, but it should explain it.
As we all know, Cantonese is a hard language/dialect to learn. Google translate does not support Cantonese and we don't have pin yin to help us with pronounciation. This app has helped me increase my vocab and understanding of Chinese characters. Best of all, it's free! Thanks guys!
I've reviewed many apps in Playstore, this is by far the best in terms of learning both written and phonetics of English, Mandarin and Cantonese dialect. Keep it up.
Great App, if you are a self learning kind of person and cantonese is on your plate. The app is very straightforward and vast. The best part for me is we can hear both eng and cant words.
I lived in Hong Kong and learned Cantonese to a conversational level many years ago. This app makes it very easy to brush up and either relearn or learn new words and phrases in both written and spoken Cantonese Chinese.
Very helpful. My Cantonese is fluent but sometimes there sre terms I forget how to say, it's so good to have an app that translate English to/from Cantonese (majority is only Mandarin). I really love that it also has voice pronunciation. 多謝你. 大部分翻譯App都係普通話, 而我已經好流利. 可以確認我廣東話發音正確有好大幫助.
This was great to improve my diminishing Cantonese. Awesome to find something that is English - Cantonese and not just Mandarin. A funny coincidence I found, was finding the amount of idioms/proverbs that are somehow related to some words, and Cantonese has A LOT.
It is the first Cantonese dictionary app that I've used, but it doesn't have many idioms, it doesn't have many definitions for individual characters, and it need pinying for the Mandarin pronunciations.
English or Chinese input. Written text output are large font to see characters properly..Can read your word in a sentence format. Ads don't bother. Recommend.
It's convenient, but the pronunciation of some words is vague and unclear, especially in Cantonese.
slow, with ads, and couldn't even provide the most basic of words like "water". must be somthing better out there.
I'm a Cantonese Canadian, but there are words I don't know how to speak phonetically. This app is such a good reference for me to search for words I don't know how to say.
This app is not helpful at all. i cannot find the Cantonese words when i type the pingying and if I do find it the app does not show the meaning. This is completely useless.
Easy to use, shows how each character is pronounced and works well.
A reasonable dictionary. In addition, phrases using the word are offered which is a helpful feature. I prefer more phrases. However people unfamiliar with the Chinese language may find this unhelpful, maybe even confusing. On the other hand, a reverse lookup with an English word can be very confusing as it returns a thing with the string of letters embedded in it. Perhaps, the developer makes a setting to turn off or on this feature.
