Carat

PLEASE READ BEFORE INSTALLING
Carat is the first app to generate personalized recommendations for improving your battery life. After observing your use of the device for about a week, it will start to generate reports just for you.

Carat does not use GPS. It never runs in the background. The app uses almost no power.

Thank you!

Ever wondered why your battery is draining so quickly? Just install Carat, open it every few days so it can send data to our servers, and within a week Carat will start recommending Actions (just for you!) and even predicting the improvements you will see. Although Carat cannot measure energy use directly, it infers what apps are responsible using advanced machine learning methods.

And it's free!

As you use your device, Carat occasionally takes measurements and sends them to our backend servers in the cloud, where we apply cutting-edge algorithms to determine what steps you can take to use less energy. By collecting snippets of non-personal data from a large number of devices, Carat does not need to run continuously in the background. Nothing we collect identifies you, personally.

Carat will tell you which apps it thinks are hogs (they use a lot of battery) and which are bugs (they use a lot of battery on your device but not most others). Being a hog or a bug does not make an app 'bad', but a user trying to improve their battery life can use these designations to adjust their behavior.

Carat Features •  Action List telling you how to improve your battery life and by how much•  Device information detailing exactly what data we are recording•  Reports apps that are using lots of energy and whether that is happening on other devices, too•  Detail views let you dive down into the data•  Low-overhead sampling requires almost no energy or CPU•  J-Score tells you how your battery efficiency compares to other users•  Sharing features let you post/tweet/blog about your experience; more users means more data which means better recommendations for you

Carat started at the AMP Lab, UC Berkeley, in collaboration with University of Helsinki. It is under active development by a team of researchers in the NODES group, Department of Computer Science, University of Helsinki. We are constantly making improvements, adding features, and giving you more knowledge about how your device is using energy. Remember, knowledge is power!

Makes impractical suggestions about which MAJOR apps to disable or uninstall. (These are apps like Swype and Chrome, and others that most of us use daily.) Also the J score seems a bit 'optimistic' for my oldish phone. Finally it doesn't really seem to actually 'do' anything else but upload statistics, which the user must perform manually themselves. Uninstalled. 😶

It seems like people giving bad reviews don't understand the purpose this application. They also don't appear to know how to use it. It's fantastic at what it does and provides very useful infomation regarding applications power usage

I'm not impressed. Carat tells me I've got 5 bugs and 2 hogs. Ok great! Now what? There's no option to shut these apps down, no link to the device settings, no option to prevent these apps from starting up again... so what good is Carat?? Uninstalled...

Not real world score. 4 year old LGg5 scored 99, 2 month old Samsung S20+ scored 24, 2800 v 4500 battery.

Development stopt in 2018...

Need to read their website before judging.

As others have said, ny J score went from 32 to 99. Neither score was realistic. This phone, an LG V20 on Android 7, typically lasts 14-16 hours. At a J score of 32, it was showing a battery life of 8h 22 minutes +/- 49 minutes. At a J score of 11 hours 22 minutes +/-32 minutes. In addition it as saying I should stop/force stop Bluetooth Services (bluetooth is not on), and contact storage services, which can't be stooped.

I like this app in general with good information but most recently just crashes out. Please fix.

The app does not upload data any more. Is this a problem with the servers or the app?

The app is not working on my Samsung Galaxy S9+

I should have said Thank you to the developers of this app a long time ago but I would also like to say that the newest update has slowed the app down and it's not as robust is it used to be taking more time to send samples than it used to which is kind of annoying. With that said the app totally works and helps to get better battery life. Thank You again.

This is the very first app I install on any phone I buy. I have used it since they started, years ago. It sits there quietly, doing it's work, collecting it's information, and then, when it's ready, sends you a report complied by the fine minds of the research team behind it. It never fails, it never gives up, it is accurate, it is unobtrusive. The best example of a useful app - if ever there was one. Imagine having all the information you need, to make choices about how your device utilises battery?

I just installed an app to find out what is using my CPUs processor most, and guess what came up? Carat is the number one user and quite probably the reason my system is always so busy and stressed. I thought this app was a good product however it seems to be a problem now. Uninstall.

Taking way too many samples and data it has become the big considering removal as benefits are starting be outweighed by the drawbacks.

JAG. B. Jan 15, 2018

Got it for 2 days now lets see how accurate this is

Dan. S. Dec 14, 2017

Latest version refuses to send samples in. I have 4500+ samples that can't be submitted, no error message.

Kur. S. Jan 1, 2018

Ironically the carat itself became the bug it is trying to find!! Had really bad battery backup for the last month which became better when I uninstalled the app. My phone was always "awake" in the Android battery usage that stopped when uninstalled the app. Please do fix it

Latest version eating 31% of battery, must uninstall for now. Before that pretty good

Rob. A. Dec 27, 2017

I've been using this app for years now, but it is now being weird. I reinstalled it because I couldn't believe a battery life of almost 2 days has so low a j score. Then it worked for a while, then about the time the charging sampling was instituted, my j score was negative. That got fixed, but again I was getting scores that made no sense, I reinstalled and it has been zero for well over a week. I just now had it flash up with a score of 87, but then it vanished and saying zero again. Come on guys.

Tod. B. Dec 26, 2017

Used to be great. Crazy high battery usage after the last two updates.

Ron. W. Dec 19, 2017

Not sending samples. Uninstalling

Pau. J. Dec 17, 2017

Was good but now seems to be using a lot of battery even though it is only supposed to be running when I open it?? Uninstalling for now...

Nat. D. Nov 20, 2017

Lately it's using more battery than the hogs it complains about... I'm still hoping it gets fixed soon.

Jam. L. Nov 15, 2017

New version is a battery hog! Used to be unobtrusive. Now takes 10% of battery by itself and continually fires up notifications.

Mic. C. Dec 18, 2017

Used this for a while, latest version is chugging battery, ironic much...... Uninstalled.
