The user interface needs major work. I gave it a good try and played yesterday and today, but it is so frustrating to use. The board should be rotated 30 degrees so you can fit more in the screen at once, and the 5 resources along the bottom should be moved over to the left for the same reason. Dice can go along bottom left. The trade is ridiculous. Some of the trade resource icons are way too tiny. Also, the position of the offer/request (red/green arrow) changes so sometimes you have to really pay attention. They should be in the same place / order all the time so you don't have to really waste time trying to figure out which one is the offer. The trade interface is also not intuitive in how it presents what you have and what you're trading for. It shows you what you'd have after the trade, which is weird. Would rather see what what I have now. Also, holding a phone in portrait mode is way easier - there should be a portrait mode. The "X" button to cancel a trade is way on the bottom left, so you have to take your right hand off the phone a lot - should be able to just play with both hands on the phone as much as possible. Also, after a certain point in the game, I can't zoom out enough to see the entire board. Using an S10e. This would be okay for a free app, but I am requesting a refund because this is the most frustrating game play from a user experience perspective I've had in a paid app before.
This game has great visuals to match the original board game, but that's where it all stops. This has to be the laziest CPU programming I've ever seen in a game. They don't know how to program a smarter playing CPU, so they just programmed in dice and card manipulation. If you start winning by a few points you will find your numbers won't be rolled for 4-6 full turns. Then when they are, opponents all of the sudden have all the sabateur and master merchant cards and your back to 2-3 cards.
I want to love this game but the dice rolling in single player mode is a complete joke...I have screen shots to prove it. Last game I played 7s rolled nearly twice as often as the next number which was the 9...interesting that I didn't have any city or settlement on a 9. Constant 7s so they move the robber back and forth and take all your cards. Love Catan but this is really unplayable.
Purchased game but the basic offline campaign is still unavailable unless purchased for an additional fee. Most of the game still locked after purchase. Also had to create an account to play the game after purchase, and was unable to play without account. Developers will have to rethink their strategy for how they want to sell a locked game.
Stalemate? It doesn't think so. This game needs to figure out if any more moves can be played. I've been in a game for about 10 full rounds without anything to build. All Cities spent, all roads used, and no free intersections to build settlements. All development cards are gone too. A mechanic to detect that would be helpful. I don't know if anyone will win this game. I could quit and restart, but still. More of an idea than a criticism. Fun nonetheless.
This game is a lot of fun! The only problem I've found is that the computer cheats terribly. The true odds of certain numbers being rolled clearly do not apply to this game. So often the computer will make 11s, 12s, 2s, and 3s roll more often if it benefits the computer. There have been so many times where I clearly should be getting more resources, but the computer gets more and they get all the opportune development cards. Catan needs to make the dice more realistic.
I absolutely LOVE this game, but every single time there's an update I lose my campaign progress and it is infuriating. Also, the bugs are ridiculous! There is nothing more frustrating than playing an online game with others and AIs only for the game to continually freeze and force close, because the AIs are trying to pick a resource from their gold token. I play it daily and am always pulling my hair out. It could be SO good!
Tried to play my first game online and got through about 30 minutes of gameplay before the game froze for my friend and then for me. Could not reload the game afterward. Tried to start another game with just one friend and could not get the game to let me to play. It skipped my turn on the opening round twice, froze the game, then only allowed me to build a city before it crashed altogether. I wish I could give this game 0 stars because of how buggy and ineffective it was. I wish I hadn't paid $5 to find out that this app just doesn't work.
Buggy! When you leave a game and resume it later, autozoom is turmed on again, the annoying comments are turned on again - even though the corresponding options are displayed as "off". Not even turning them on and off helps, one has to bear autozoom and stupid comments until the end of the game. Furthermore, it would be very helpful if trading could be disabled entirely - I do not want to trade with AI players and have to deny an offer in almost every turn!
Seems designed to be hard to play unless you have every card and mechanic already memorized, know exactly what resources and cards you have at any given time, and never look away from the screen. You can't look at your progress cards or even the settings when it's not your turn, which makes the turns take longer (especially because you want to turn every feature off). Frequently pops up to kick players, even if their turn just started.
New UPDATE: If playing the new free expansion maps (especially ones that has islands), the game would freeze up when the islands' specific number is rolled. I would have to close the game/app, come back to it, and re-roll. Other than that, everything else like the classic maps and modes seems to be running smoothly.
IT'S F'ING DISGUSTING HOW MUCH THE AI IN THIS GAME F'ING CHEATS!! It makes it almost unplayable! The game actually adjusts the rolls/dice outcome according to what the situation is, in favor of the bots!! (If it wasn't for this, I'd give the game a higher rating!) I like the classic graphics! Game play is fine. There are a few bugs (esp. with the trading mechanism). Would like to have my Development cards displayed during the game.
I play this game all the time. However, it is super frustrating when you can just tell the game is stacked against you. AI players go out of their way to take from you even if you are last. The game obviously knows when you have 7 or more cards and will for sure roll a 7 on your turn to make you discard. One time, I lost nearly 20 cards to robber and monopoly in a span of 3 turns. But overall, it's a decent game, but you are definitely punished for being in the lead.
Decent, fluid, gameplay. I can't see the stats though; everytime I click on the stats the app crashes. I have also had to re-download at lease 20 times; I'm no sure why, but I am prompted to do so before I can use the app. It's always about a 70'ish megabyte re-download. I never know when it will happen, which makes me not want to use the app.
Unbalanced Rubber Band Physics. I love Catan the board game but this is just junk. Rolls favor the AI to the extent it's impossible to win. You can get out ahead but once you do, in the late game you'll get 2-3 resources a round, I didnt have any 8s and I watched it hit 8 four rounds in a row. Then all of a sudden they go from down by 8 to winning placing a road and a settlement each round, and drawing two victory points. Played this game for hours and won 2. Garbage!
Great game! It's getting closer to pure random rolls, but still the game rolls against you after you gain a lead, and your automated opponents cooperate with each other against you even when there is no individual advantage for each NPC to do so... it used to be ridiculously slanted, but it seems some tweaks have taken place. Thanks, overlords of the Catan Universe, for listening!
AI cheats. Some quirks but close to board game. PROS Looks good; Game play similar to boardgame; CONS AI has crazy streaks of luck, or rather you may have very unlucky streaks; Expect to be battered by the Robber; Forced trades; Extra ships gets stuck between settlements; Roads interrupted by AI but you can't. *Interface is too simplistic, have to do everything via a menu; Any actions can only be completed during turn, even settings; Cannot turn off animations, takes unnecessary time.
Updated: The online version doesn't work. I paid for this app, but even if you're able to register, the online version wont start. Disapointing Second problem has to do with the game fairness. I played over 200 games at "Hard" level and it's very difficult to win. Not because the robots are "smart", but because the dices distribution changes. the probability of getting a 2 on each dice is around 3%. the probablility of gettting three consecutive 2 is 0.01%. However, you'll see that happening a lot if you play against the computer. Suddenly you're leading by 5 points and the dices roll are highly biased towards the computer and then you finally loose. The developpers of this game clearly took a shortcut to make this level "hard", which brings out the fun of the game. Conclusion: Very fun game in real, but the app has serious flaws that makes it not enjoyable.
Deeply disappointed with this app. For a game that you pay for, you expect a certain level of quality and user experience. What you get is tons of bugs, app crashes, and poor usability. Online is near unplayable due to it being difficult to navigate, limited communication options, and old game design. The boardgame Catan has the potential to be a great app, though this version fails to deliver. With the money they generate from purchases, surely they can invest in fixing this disaster.
Just downloaded and played 2 long games. Full of bugs. When choosing a card to play the system plays the card beside the one you choose. Resources not registered when clearly the map shows you as receiving them. Got kicked out of games a few times. Great lags in loading game to play. More to come. How can Catan charge people these prices to play such a bad product ? Please fix these issues.
I have a samsung s8+. Same issues as the others. It requires additional data to be downloaded but no option available to do this. I have tried adjusting the resolution but the work around does not fix the problem. It appears to be a waste of money at the moment until the app is fixed but it seems like it hasn't worked for a while now. I wish that I had read all the reviews beforehand. I wouldn't have purchased the game if I had. Please refund my money.
And we're back with a big that doesn't inhibit gameplay but seems like an unnecessary toggle if it wont work. Please keep the "Opponent's Comments" off if I toggle the switch to OFF. It makes me seem like you want me to see the same 4 lines in solo play as if that is adding to the hours of my experience. If you're going to keep it in, take away my ability to control it.
More often than not game plays wrong development card in expansions. I looked for in game way to report and nothing was obvious. Also for solo play I'd like a "undo" sometimes I click the wrong thing because the controls are a bit clunky and you're just stuck with the mistake or in the case of the glitch whichever random development card it selects.
App updates constantly and nothing is ever fixed. All settings get reset every time it updates. "random" number generation for dice rolls, has become progressively worse. If I roll a 7 on my turn, I can close the app, reopen and 7 will roll 2 or 3 more times before I get another number. 3-4 7's in a row? Opponents numbers get heavily favored until they have 9 points, then suddenly the opponent forgets how to play. 45 cards and they can't trade them in and build a settlement suddenly? Bs
Bought the expansion packs to the game to get the full experience... my experience so far is awful ... players take too long to play or leave the game and sometimes when replaced by computer the game just stops ... the computer doesn't play at all you are then forced to leave the game ... do not bother with this game , there are many bugs as well ... some of which kick you out of the game when playing ... its frustrating!
