CBC News

A really good news app, it's simple, direct, and informative. Considering how bad apps can be, and the CBC's missteps over time (still unable to make an Alexa news flash skill that doesn't run on forever), it's worth appreciating when they get it right. One problem it does have - ads before videos go on far too long, and are terribly repetitive, so I don't play any. Need to be more like YT here and add a skip button. The same problem afflicts Gem btw, it's boneheaded and costs viewers.

It updated and now doesn't work. I click an article and it crashes back to main page. The earlier version was fine, so I don't know why they decided to update before the bugs were worked out. I'll just to to the website, 'cause it barely matters if there's a dedicated ap for this.

I downloaded this app assuming there'd be fewer adds than YouTube, but 17 in one video? Also, the same add played 4 times in a row in two ad breaks. This is... unpleasant... If it wasn't for the excessive, repetitive ads, this would otherwise be good. EDIT: Sorry, did I say 17? I just finished the video. There were 27 ads in total.

Literally clicked to read an article about a tornado watch in effect and was forced to watch a video ad. I've been getting annoyed with the volume of repetitive ads on the app lately but this is actually inappropriate and dangerous.

Mostly great but some stories from Radio 1 like As It Happens don't fit on my Android phone. The lines are about 10% wider than regular articles and it's too annoying to shift back and forth to read.

Ugly user interface and difficult to choose what to watch. For example, I don't see where the National, the live news broadcast is. If it's actually there at all. I only see short video clips. I'm completely lost on the app, so I'm uninstalling unfortunately.

I have an addiction to CBC radio and tv. B4 cell ph it was a transistor radio. I tune in to xc checkup etc when I am Stateside. The GREAT thing is the familiar voices of reason <> emanating from the airwaves give me comfort and a sense of belonging to something much bigger. Caution: unbridled patriotism. Of course there is another "Public Radio" but I think it's keeping things competitive which makes me feel my taxes are well worth it.

Searching for news has an unintuitive interface. Takes many presses to get the app to understand you want to enter new text, not search on the thing you searched for last.

You now get full screen ads (can cancel) in addition to the ads embedded in the news articles. Ads before video clips (cannot cancel) can run almost as long as the video clip, so I just don't watch most video clips. I agree with another reviewer that the search function is poor; it's easier to find a CBC article using Google.

I've stopped using this app. They have recently started inserting intrusive commercial advertising, which is (increasingly) "required viewing" before allowing access to the news article of interest. NOT ACCEPTABLE for a publicly funded hews service.

I just want the news in a clean simple to navigate format. I don't want it to integrate with tv or google chat or to be able to vacuum the attic. Stop reheadlining the same stories as click bait. Stop making new ways to navigate. And stop autoplaying videos. When a video starts you cannot stop it. This means that if I accidentally open a video story I disrupt those around me.

App used to be ok, now i updated it and it does not allow me to open any of the news stories from their headline tags. Completely useless unless i only want 1 ot 2 line news stories.

When I link to a video in a news articles, it changes the direction of viewing (profile from landscape) and then it rights itself. But the problem is when I exit the video it flips again but doesn't correct itself and I have to close the video looking at the screen sideways. Reorientating my tablet to profile to watch video does not fix the problem.

The ads are becoming too much. I accidentally backed out of a video after watching a 30 second video and had to watch another.

CBC continues to go down the path of bias, to the point of illegibility. It is unfortunate that no mainstream media source is able to avoid editorializing almost every single article. Please report the news and leave it up to the reader to form the opinion.

The app was great until those annoying pop-up ads. I have uninstalled it. I'll get my news from another source. The BBC app is great, so far.

It's good but when I get a notification of a story of interest, I click the link and have to scroll through a bunch of other stories. A bit frustrating, but a great site. .

User friendly app but the ads in the articles are way too sensitive. While scrolling through an article I have to make sure my thumb touches everything but the ad or else it opens it. It's very annoying - I don't have this problem with any other app.

The videos all have an ad before them and take a long time to load. Also the suggested stories for you are always selected on a very narrow algorithm, it is hard to find stories outside of what is suggested.

Keeps me informed the way I want to be. I had to turn off alerts, and use the app 'on demand' because it will assail anti-phone people like me with notifications. That's not a bad thing for most, but I prefer to check when I have time to read the articles. Highly recommend this app.

The videos are preceded by half of minute of advertising. Then the video plays but crashes over 90% of the time. This has been my experience over the last 2 years. They haven't been able to resolve this problem. Very frustrated.

Easy to navigate app for local and national news. I could do without the articles that link to pay per read news outlets, or at least an indication in the title before I start reading them.

The notifications do not group and as a result it crowds the notification area and tray. Edit 2: the app hangs regardless of WiFi or cellular data. Hangs for a long time and force closing or refreshing does not work

Video ads to read a simple article? Seriously? Used to be quite decent. Don't mind the video ads to watch video content but 15 or 30 second ads to read a short article is a bit ridiculous. Time to find a new news app.

Used to be a great app for news, but now its become riddled with ads and it's becoming too distracting to use. Considering how much funding CBC receives from Canadian tax dollars, you'd expect that their app would be ad-free for Canadian users.

Just updated to the new version and the app crashes EVER SINGLE TIME. I can't open or read anything now. Is this app compatible with older phones? I'm Android A7....

Keeps crashing when I attempt to open a story. Cannot read anything other than headlines. Update is useless, making CBC unreadable.

Straightforward app, I can get the news I'm after but the amount of ads on the platform is a bit crazy. Isn't this the public news service? I wish the developers would look at the Australian ABC app and take some pointers.
