I couldn't get sound for individual words at first but the developer quickly responded with the solution. You have to go into settings and switch text to speech to Google. In my case, the default was Samsung. I changed the text to speech setting to Google and also set the language to Chinese and now it works.
Have been using this app for years and the content is great. Just wish they could get the bugs under control, feels like they've been way worse the last free few years and it takes away from the experience.
Plenty of content but the levels are poorly curated - in each article 50% or more of the characters will be outside the specified HSK level. This makes it useless as a source of comprehensible input.
Lol 🤣😆🤣 Doesn't work "Learn mandarin??" It's an news/blog app and no mandarin to be found. None of the free samples would open. I can only assume this app has closed. 😆🤣 再见
My experience had been great but the program appears to have auto updated and now no longer works on my Android device. For the past week it has been stuck on the loading data screen. Support has promised a fix but it is still broken. I can use the web version on my phone in desktop mode, but it is difficult to read. Please push back the old version until the problem can be fixed.
Update on 7Dec2021. Still the same issues. Somebody coffee l contacted me ensuring they're working on the problem, but I don't see a fix action. If anybody have recommendations for a different app, please let me know, because this one isn't it.I am a paying user for 2 years now. More than ever, the app is crashing. Not sure why, but there are days I can't even get on. When I can, I enjoy the articles and the definitions and lessons that go along with them.
Great app, very easy to use and lots of content for all different language levels
Up until recently I would have given this app a 4 star to 5 star rating. However, the new UI is a catastrophe. On my current Android 10, the character spacing is terrible. Characters on one line are almost on top of characters on the next line. Changing size doesn't help much. And navigation is really a big step backwards in comparison the previous version. In short the new UI is a failure. Go back to your last version UI and just make small incremental improvements. Please.
Great app! Some feedback: - When doing word association in a quiz, dont display 'correct' in the middle of the screen as it slows me down and blocks my view. - Handwriting function to learn characters is slow and not useful compared to other apps. Not that important to be in this app, but an area to improve. - Clicking on a news title doesnt explain the character but instead translates it to/from English. What about allowing a long press for the character explanation popup? That'd be so useful!
A little slow to start but not as bad as other comments have indicated. A very wide selection with wise use of vocabulary. While my knowledge of Mandarin grammar still has much room to develop, I've never been left thinking to myself "that just doesn't sound right" as I think with some other, more vocabulary focused apps.
TCB is an excellent tool for self-study. The articles do not require too much time to read. I like to toggle between Simplified and Traditional characters to see the differences quickly. The live dictionary and keyword, grammar, and proper noun guides are very helpful. My favorite feature is the comprehension tests. It didn't take me long to decide to become a Premium subscriber.
I really like the app, I have been learning chinese for more than 4 years. But It was really difficult for me to learn and improve due to lack of materials. However, when I came across this app. I really found it very usefull. They post the articles as per your level. We can save the new words and review later on. This is the best thing. It also allows you to improve your listening. Best App.!!!!
This is exactly what I have been looking for for years. When I first started learning Chinese several years ago, I looked for graded readers but couldn't find anything authentic. I learn best by reading, but with Chinese it's tough going when you don't know many characters. This is the perfect solution. I love how in each article you can look up words you don't recognize by simply tapping them. The range of topics seems to be good as well, allowing for acquiring a wider range of vocabulary.
This is a very good app. Tons of reading material and always adding new stuff. Personally I'd like the English translation just to check my understanding, but it's not a deal breaker. It's so much nicer to discover new vocabulary through reading rather than grinding away at vocab lists. If it's within your budget then it's a must for mandarin students.
Excellent app! I love learning Chinese using authentic content that not only breaks down grammar and vocab but also exposes me to current news that is happening in China and around the world. Additionally their customer support was fantastic! I had an issue with my subscription and it was fixed within a few hours. I wish I had an app like this when I was learning Spanish back in the day. If you're looking to improve all aspects of your Mandarin I highly recommend this app as one of your tools.
Content is OK but app is pretty poorly done. It forgets your preferences (show/hide Pinyin and font) so you have to set them every time. Reported the issue thru the app but got no response. Dictionary definition pop up gets in the way. The lack of sentence definitions, and word definitions that may be wrong in the context, can make things more difficult than in a competitor app (you'll definitely want another dictionary app open when reading).
This app is great! the lessons are easy to work and well balanced to all levels of Chinese proficiency. My only hope is that their flashcards aren't intuitive. they feel last minute and neglected. it also appears that the team will be adding video, which would be an exciting and welcome addition!
This app is great in the sense that the articles are really well written, new material is constantly added and it's actually super interesting. However, the actual app itself is just terribly designed. Compared to Duchinese, the app is really, really amateurly made. The UI is a mess and not well designed, the dictionary is slow and half the time doesn't retrieve the words, there are tons of other bugs too. Generally, the content writers can't be praised high enough, the stories are way more interesting than DuChinese, but the app designers need a lot of criticism for how bad the android app is. I'm not sure why it's so bad but the UI and UX really needs to be improved, the content is so great but the poor functionality of the app really disrupts the experience. I hope they'll improve this and I really do want to continue supporting this company for its great reading material.
Upside : The lessons are good. It has stories and articles with playable audio, with questions after story for exercises, video lessons, all classified accordingly. Downside: Almost everything is premium. I would really consider premium account if everything works properly as the contents worth it. However, subscription choices always loading. Video also can't be played. P. S: It would be perfect if there is translations for full sentence and sentence pointer when audio played for articles.
I really like the news articles, while the levels sometimes only roughly reflect the news articles vocabulary, there are some really good pieces, so it's a very practical approach to study, pick up some more relevant words outside of HSK and also read something informative. Listening to the articles also helps a lot for studying. The only problem I see is the amount of articles available depend a little on the level - the higher the more content.
Really good opportunity for listening and reading practice, and lots of new vocabulary, but very very buggy. Can take a few tries before it loads properly, interface has a lot of lag and can be very blocky, sometimes the audio files wont load at all and the all has to be restarted, can be frustrating. Would recommend but hopefully there will be updates to fix this
Wonderful app. I enjoy learning through reading the most and this app provides excellent material, well categorized by skill level. Also provides users the function to save, and later study, new and unfamiliar words. Currently, the only issue I experience is that words will occasionally fail to have a definition appear when clicked on but it looks like a bug or error in code, rather than "a lack of information available.
A great learning resource that definitely helps improve my chinese. Stars removed because finding the standard subscriptions (as opposed to the week/2 week unlocks) is impossible in the app. The flashcard system is clunky and unintuitive. The dictionary pop up bugs out a lot. If they polished this up a little then I'd be happy to pay more.
Brilliant product, have used it on and off for a few years, from HSK 1-6. Slight preference for the web version, but app works equally well. Worth the Premium subscription, particularly if you use it regularly! Thanks for the hard work that has gone into making and maintaining it, would love to continue to see developments.
Excellent resouce, excellent content excellent app and excellent service. Resource: Having premade articles at my level at my fingertips means I can always be improving my Chinese. The dictionary system is smooth and convenient. Content: The articles are interesting and varied and always new ones too. Great motivation. App: Everything is clear and intuitive. Nothing interrupting my study time. Service: Got a prompt reply helping with what turned out to be an issue with my phone settings.
Customer Service is very responsive. There's very limited resources I can access for my level (unless the same goes for all levels) without premium. I may buy it, the articles definitely seem like what I am looking for, but we'll see, still a bit out of price range. Maybe just 1 month while I have time.
I've just wished they had some English translation of the text so I can check that I'm actually translating the information correctly. It sometimes is hard to know if I'm understanding the information in the right way. There is another Chinese language learning app that allows you to toggle the English translation on and off which is really handy so you can check if you are reading the texts correctly. Apart from this, I really like it up and have renewed my subscription several times.
