Chess for Android

Chess for Android consists of a chess engine and a GUI. The application accepts moves through the touch screen, trackball, or keyboard (e2e4 pushes the king pawn, e1g1 castles king side, etc.). An optional "move coach" highlights valid user moves during input and last played engine move. Full game navigation buttons enable users to correct mistakes or analyze games. Games import and export as FEN/PGN to and from the clipboard or via sharing, load and save as file, or are set up through a position editor. A draw by stalemate, insufficient material, the fifty move rule, or threefold repetition is recognized. The engine plays at various levels (including random, against itself in auto-play, or free-play, where the game can be used as a "magnetic chessboard"). The user can play either side and, independently, view the board from the perspective of white or black.
The application supports the Universal Chess Interface (UCI) and Chess Engine Communication Protocol (WinBoard and XBoard), which allows users to play against more powerful third party engines or even play tournaments between engines. Engine setup features time control, pondering, infinite analysis, hash tables, multiple threads, endgame tablebases, and opening test suites. Recognizes Chessbase compatible engines.

Yes! Finally, a way to record a game I'm playing with someone on FB, correspondence chess, and keep it current (using free play mode). I can take a screenshot after each of us moves and post it. It's a nice big board, good pieces, and color options. I can flip the board, too, since I'm playing black. I can exit the game and when I start it up, everything is just the way I left it. The only thing that would be nice is if I could save multiple games instead of being limited to one.

Cool app! But... The default engine's levels are skewed incredibly tough. I'm a 1600 lichess player and I find it difficult to win against level 1 — it plays like lichess computer level 5 (out of only 8!). This should not be the lowest level above random.

I enjoy this a lot but there needs to be a way to disable notification everytime you let the cpu make a move or you castle etc. It bogs down the app and gets annoying fast. Edit: These are not SPOKEN MOVES this is a text notification when the computer makes a move on your behalf.

I'm no good at chess. I don't have time to play real people at chess. But in spare moments instead of idling away on some meaningless activity I work at what could loosely be called my chess "strategy." I will probably never win a game on this app but getting a little closer than I usually do is always a nice thing.

Thanks for providing this fantastic app which I use with the DGT board. I want to report a problem with taking back halfmoves when playing with the DGT board. Shortly the take-back only works when I first take back the half-move on the board, then press the take-back button. For example, I play e4 on the board, the computer replies e5, I play Nf3 on the board, the computer replies Nc6. Now I click the take-back button. The software undoes Nc6, but after a very short while, the computer replays Nc6 and then makes a White move. As mentioned, when I first take back the move on the board then press the take-back button, everything works fine. The problem occurred with the DGT Bluetooth board and DGT SmartBoard (USB connection). If possible, please check that once in a while. In the meantime, thanks again for the great app.

The best chess app I've come across by some margin. Plus no ads! To be able to offer a draw would be a slight refinement worth considering.

Unplayablly HARD. Lowest easiest level chews me up like I'm playing Magnus. I'd love to play more, but man, losing every single game is defeating my morale. Great game. 5-stars but I think I'm uninstalling? I can't decide.

I have used this game for 3 minute blitz practice for many years now. I installed Komodo because I have another excellent chess for Android game. I would have given this developer 5 stars but the program only applies the 3 fold position rule when it needs it. For those who find this game difficult get the book Morphy's Games of Chess and play like Morphpy and you will easily beat this program! All in all it is an excellent program - not on par with Shredder for tournament practice however.

What a joke. The engine keeps on resigning at the middle of the game. My reply to the dev: The engine I use never resigns with other chess GUIs only in this app. It's resigning even though the position is equal.

Im rated just above 1400 and I can't beat this game. It doesn't have an adjust difficulty setting, not that I'm complaining but wow my 0-17 score against it is embarrassing. It's fun though, small app does just about all you would want a chess app to do. 0 lag

Different people want different things. I'm a club level player and only care about human opponents but I want to improve. For my requirements this app is the perfect training tool. I use it to set up positions copied from a book on endgames and practice repeatedly against the engine, which plays well and never gets bored. It took a while to discover a key dropdown menu (press finger on screen for a moment and it appears). Once mastered this is a very good app and a pleasure to use. No ads!

The menus and interface aren't intuitive maybe because I'm used to Winboard on my PC. Also I've been trying to analyse a position from FEN but I can't see the engine's analysis. However I can make it play against me. Can anyone help please? All in all I think it's the best free chess app but I've given only 4 stars because there's still a lot of work to be done to make the interface and menu more user-friendly.

This game is extremely well made. The graphics are simple, the code is simple. There's no fancy animation, no ads, no calls to action, no mess in the UI. Because of that, it runs super fast. And it has a lot of features. You can play against a friend or the game itself (which plays very well), or set up custom piece arrangements to do experiments or end-games. If you ever pull out your phone for something to do, play some chess against this app. It turns your brain back on very quickly.

The game looks pretty slick on android platform. One feature which is missing is that the human player can only play as white and not as black in the game. It would be nice to have a feature to switch sides and invert the board at any instant. This would enable the human player to ponder moves from a opponent's point of view. Another feature which is nice to have is the computer playing both sides in the game in a fully automated way. The game seems like great work in any case.

Great app. One small thing is that when I copied the pgn of a game the tags for who was playing who was incorrect. Also I do wish it could be possible yo go back and look at all games played in a tournament!

Very good. I was in a hurry with that last review (above single line). Actually this is probably the best and most sophisticated chess program i've ever used for Android. Lots of options, lots of features, connects to a real chess board, import other engines, it does everything. It's 2d but i hate 3d anyway and any self respecting chess player wants 2d as 3d is just for show really (like super fancy chess sets that are mostly for show not for play). Is there an opening book addition feature? That might be nice too. The older PC chess programs have a text file for your personal opening book.

All you need in an offline chess app and nothing you don't. Elegant, solid, and totally brutals. Level 1 will eat you the moment you make a mistake, so it's not great for beginners; but it's nothing a yasser seirawan book can't fix. I play most games as Black(switch sides, flip board), but occasionally I win. If you play tightly and stay flexible, your human insight can juke the algorithm and beat it at its own game, which is quite rewarding. It's great for practice and study.

Great app the engine is so strong . Also good for analysis and learning . Then how to i resign a game using the app?

Ash. s. Mar 6, 2022

One of the best chess game. It also helps to learn chess to new player.

It is a chess but I always keep losing and it pauses automatically

Great chess application! I really appreciate that it's not overloaded with arguable (and often unnecessary) functionality other chess apps have. I like simple clean design of the pieces and board. Thank you for implementing the custom board setup functionality. I have a book of my own that I use to learn different chess combinations and it's so handy I can just set whatever the combination I want and practice on my tablet. And thank you for making the app ads-free!

Played chess for years, this app is insanely hard. It's just not fun. Uninstalling. I have gotten close once on level 1.

Mic. H. Jan 7, 2020

Brutal, even at the lowest difficulty level. This merciless piece of software destroys you in minutes unless you are a very experienced player. Not recommended for beginners or out of practice players trying to get back on the horse. There's no learning curve here, no fun. I'm sure professional chess players and masochists can add two or three stars, but I'm not one of them.

This is a very good, very versatile chess app- best I've found. But I don't know how to interpret the built-in engine output-- for example "[6/9]332" in green under the board. It doesn't actually show moves.
