This is a nice app. However it is awkward to use on a tablet computer that has a screen resolution in the ratio 3:2. The Chess board takes up too much of the screen, with little space underneath to display all the variations. DroidFish has a similar problem, but DF can redisplay itself into landscape mode and can place the text at the side, if the tablet has auto rotate on. Chess Openings does not do this. It stays fixed in portrait mode.

I found this app to be very useful. I can't speak about tablet operation but on my phone it works well. It's much easier to explore openings with this app than with any book I've come across. I can see the variations available and how they're likely to develop, along with the name that identifies it. A great aid to expanding my understanding and chess game play

I found it to be quite useful. I use it in tandem while playing other opponents on another chess app. Except, It's a little confusing at first if your a novice like me. I wouldn't mind if there was some kind of tutorial on how to use it for newbies included. However, if you spend a little time messing around you can figure it out for yourself. And let's be honest if you can't then you probably shouldn't be playing chess. LOL

Nice app, and I found another use for it: when a chess book doesn't have enough diagrams for my level, I enter the first moves on the app and 'sometimes' I find the exact game to be followed, move by move. When the game is not on the database, it would be nice to have the option to keep playing for both players (instead, the board just locks).

This interactive app teaches chess openings, as they are actually played, or have been played, at the top level. At each move, it arrows the best, or at least most common, options (with optional opening-name labels), as well as listing them, alongside statistics for each (number of games, and win/draw/lose ratios), and the current opening-name displayed as a title. Way better than a wallfull of chess books! Be sure to turn on the arrow-labelling in Settings if you're interested in the names.

I noticed it's not possible to analyze until game is open. So each time I want to check current position I have to open one of the games, make all the moves until the position I was looking at and then click analyze. Not practical at all. Analyze is very important to see why some opening moves make or make no sense. If this is fixed I will give it 5 stars.

Nice app, two problems.. 1. There is a play back one move button but no play forward button.. I.e if you've played through an opening and need to play back and forward again to memorize, you can play back but not forward so you have to replay the moves again.. 2. No stockfish analysis included. This is freeware, I don't see any reason why we're shouldn't have computer analysis since opponents can make random moves not in your opening tree and you need to figure out the best response.. If this two can be added I'd give it a 5.

This is the best chess openings app I've come across. At every stage of the opening it shows and rates the available moves, giving percentages for win, loss or draw and the number of games that that move was made in, putting the most played move first and the least played last. It lets you backtrack as many moved as you like to see how different variations develop and will give the opening's name when enough moved have been made. An excellent tool for learning & my favourite chess app.

Its great that the chess openings are covered in detail, and its a good app for cbess enthusiasts but i would like to mention some points. #Please give an option for one move back , otherwise everytime we have to start from initial formation. # add an option so that the users can atleast make a move , if that is not in orthodox opening. #if possible add some analysis option .

Ive known how to play chess for a long time, but I wanted to understand it on a better level, with openings and responses to plays, this app does just that. There are a few things I would like it to have, but that's simply to make it an all in one, it is not lacking in its intended purpose. For something free it's just amazing what the developer took time to do for us.

Informative for those who want to improve at chess. Tactics etc all make a better player. Once you've done all the puzzles, you can start again, so when situations arise on board, you hardly have to think, automatically you move. I haven't done all puzzles and I've improved. Great stuff. Cheers Trevor.

Good app overall. Just one nitpick: The colours of the squares on the board are inverted (you can see this by looking at where the queens stand in the starting position, they should be on the squares matching their colours).

Navigation is terrible. The early moves show all the available move options but then they suddenly stop and you have to manually click through a list of games in that position to find the next move you want. I upgraded to pro expecting this to solve this, but no luck.

I have looked at a few chess opening apps, this is by far the best, you can look at an opening and also you can check out how Grandmasters played that particular opening, you can go through the game move by move and you can guess the moves along the way. To top it all off, it has plenty of quizzes. In short, you have just about everything you need to build an opening repertoire. Very easy to use, and I like the fact that the chess board and the pieces are among the best.

5 stars because I'm learning so much. I only wish there was a list of the openings, where you can click and be taken to only that opening with each variation as subsections that you can also click and see the whole line and the method of calculating and how to read the percentages should be explained in detail in a dedicated section in the app

Excellent app. Shows all the possible openings move-by-move, with a percentage chance of a win or draw for each. Easy to use for the first few moves of a game to prevent a serious blunder, and is a great visual teaching tool.

You can't even have the board with right coordinates. e1 needs to be black and it's white in the application which is completely wrong. With the board that is included right now, in order for the board to make sense you need to flip the board and have white pieces in the 8th and 7th rank which can be very misleading if perhaps beginners learn from this that the white king's bishop is black which is completely false. When they see how it actually looks they will get confused.

Absolutely an exceptional app for chess player. If improvement needed is just to summarise all the openings and make short notes on it so the beginners can understand basic concepts of a certain opening, while playing as black or white. All the gambits all mentioned , and that also correctly, but pls add more games of GM'S to see in an certain opening for free

An excellent app for all chess players. The upgraded version contains an immense library of games for easy step by step analysis of positions. The positions and game variations are easily searchable. Definitely worth the upgrade in my opinion.

I found this unintuitive to use. there was a quiz mode but no teaching mode. what opening name is this? play the moves of the following opening? I couldn't tell you, there's no sensible progression. there's a jumble of possible moves all represented by arrows, and a manual search function that doesn't go through the moves sequentially. this seems like an app for people who don't need an app like this because they already know everything.

Solid opening library. It's quite a passive tool. Would be great to have opening-specific quizzes to really test your knowledge. Still handy. Also explanations of why moves are good/bad would take this to a whole new level.

Dj. F. Dec 10, 2019

The app is absolutely great. I give 4 stars because there are green arrows all over the board which is good for amateurs, but annoying for professional players. There is no option to turn off the arrows. App developer, please fix this.

IF you upgrade for a very small fee, then not having an engine to play on with is not really an issue. There are lots of Grand Master games to play through. All the decent openings are shown and easy to understand.

Jos. S. Oct 23, 2019

Great set of openings, but what about openings that aren't commonly played? Maybe I'm just not good enough at chess to see it, But when I'm playing against an a.i. sometimes i get into a new game in two moves. Does no one really ever make the moves an a.i. does and if so, why is that a bad move?

Well laid out screen with coloured arrows guiding you easily through opening options. Opening book seems comprehensive. Great feature takes you to list of games with any current board position. The only reason I have rated it 4 stars not 5 is that the games are fairly old, with newest games in the paid version seemingly from the era where Kasparov and Polgar were toward end of careers and Carlsen and Nakamura at beginning, with no dates given for the games. Age of opening book is not stated.

Car. M. Nov 24, 2020

Just what I needed. Clear way to understand the variants and connections between openings. Just clear and practical. The statistics gives also a nice understandong of the choices, and it supports the openings until midgame phase is started. Great app

Sur. s. Dec 21, 2019

It's a nice to do exactly what the name suggests. There are a lot of openings with almost all variations. One suggestion would be to add the reasons for some initially absurd looking moves for others to understand easily

A. G. u. Mar 21, 2019

I likw the way it shows the variable openings in one screen. A little crowded, but lots of info. Best if you use the app with a physical board, then you can really explore.
