Choice of Broadsides

A swashbuckling naval adventure, in the spirit of C. S. Forester's Hornblower or Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin books, with a dash of Jane Austen. Choice of Broadsides is a free text-based game of multiple choice.

A little shorter than I hoped, with the story ending a little abruptly. The vast timeskips and fast promotions allow for little storytelling and character development. But after all this, what do we get in return? One naval battle. One. This game tries to do a little bit of everything, but ends up falling flat in every way.

Meh, it's a thing. Not the best or worst text adventure I've ever played. A bit short, but considering you don't have to pay for the whole thing I won't hold that against anybody. The story is fun - if a bit basic - and your skills actually determine what choices you should make. Overall a very well implemented mechanic. Definitely for you if you don't want to commit to some massive 200,000 word novel.

I've played through it a few times now and, though in some areas there is a bit of repetitiveness, I still really enjoyed the whole experience! My only complaint would be the abrupt ending, some gameplay past the rank of Post-Captain could be really cool! Other than that the game is great and I can't wait for new/similar content.

Fantastic, story can be changed from even the smallest of details, and plays with ideas such as honor, loyalty, mutinies, and uses stats like RPGs, and they do have a severe effect on the gameplay. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves Choose Your Own Adventure, swashbuckling adventures, ans has patience to wait 20 minutes after the story ends, because it's definitely worth it. ps: On the ads, if your offline, no ads pop up.

A damn good role-playing game with a nice step-up in diction and overall narrative quality from prior Choice games I've played, especially Life of a Mercenary. The spiring ups and downs (wavelike, you could say!) is an innately satisfying and gratifying endeavor, and picking the option of female is quite the fun thing on its own purely in terms of the simple differences in speech and reversed social status. Overall, really damn fun game, even with ads!

Very short but expertly written. The only thing I lacked in this was that it ended so shortly. I felt like I got to know my crew and my stats really did affect my different playthroughs. Best way to improve would be a little bit of customization of your ships and the potential to buy more/different ships. With the potential to even have a fleet and spend all the hard earned money from your prizes

This was a short but unexpectedly fun game, interetsting plot and historically realistic. Was nice to be able to play for free and with minimal adds. It would be nice to make more of the books 'free' but with more advertising instead of teasing people with a few chapters.

Very entertaining but sadly too short. When I got to the ending it felt as if the story was just getting started. Had lots of unexplored potential, fun nonetheless.

Awesome! I am so proud of myself! The game brings out so much more in you. I have always loved war and ships, and this game combines them both! I would only like to see a bit longer and more frustrating campaign, more conversations and if possible pictures of what is happening

This game will always have a special place in my heart, despite how short it is. You'll get engaged with the characters as they're flushed out pretty decently and a lot of the choices play on your morals. Truly a masterpiece of a text based adventure, it's just too bad that there wasn't more substance.

This one is free so you can't expect as much from as it the other ones you pay for. But it definitely isn't high on my list of ones to replay. I also find the stats a bit confusing to follow, so that might play into that some.

A short and sweet game. Fun with good replayability value. For a free game, you really can't ask for better - Good quality writing and an interesting little plot! Also, as others have said, playing as a woman character is a whole different experience and very entertaining. Definitely give this game a try!

its enjoyable, but not nearly long enough. to get alternate endings after I speed clicked- you can do it in 2-3 minutes, while reading enough to know where you are. just when it starts to be enjoyable, it ends, suddenly

Overall, this game is pretty solid. It's totally free to play through, has believable characters, and is just fun in general. My main complaint is how railroaded and linear it feels, but other than that it's a pretty good game.

it's a one time thing. a really well made one time thing, but i just deleted it after playing it and finishing 2am instead of sleeping haha. It was amazing, and there was a lot of action and it really felt like the story depended on me!

It was such an interesting story. The game made me believe as if I was really living in the place and circumstances of the character, and that too without any graphics at all. I request the developers to make a sequel to this.

A worthy addition to the Choice Games collection. A bunch of different choices that actually effect the story and multiple endings means you'll keep coming back for more.

Excellently written, and presents you with some interesting choices. I just finished a story at age 35 so it looks like there is a lot of replayability. I highly recommend it!

Out of all the games this has the best story. Its the most realistic. When the Gaulish Lieutenant died I actually felt bad. I hope there could be more stories in this genre...

Really enjoyed playing this game, the choices to be made are logical and easy to make, always enjoyed reading books by Cs Forester and this game reminds me of the Hornblower series which I really enjoyed. Will wait for the next story with anticipation.

True to the Patrick O'Brien series such as Master and Commander the game is great for being a choice oriented story although brief as it was I had hoped to get my blood thirsty rating up in the 90+ range and betray my country in favor of piracy in the far east where at the given time of late 18th century one could have gotten away with it at least for awhile ARGH! ☠️

This is a really good game. Every second, I really feel immersed, like I am in the game. And it's just naturally a great game. I recommend this to anyone. And also, the writing is really good. I can understand it very well. Although I noticed some typo in the game, but nothing's perfect. The author is a good writer.

Unfortunately the game seems to have a very big penalty system. Every wrong choice seems to penalize you harshly, but the reward system doesn't seem to reward you as much

As a deep Hornblower fan I live this game. Only is way too short! Finished it in one afternoon. However do not regret a single dollar I spent - was a lovely reminder of my favourite sea adventure novels.

Its one of the few good interaction books. No pesky luck related combat or such. Good route doable without any skills or so. Choices related to requirements and no freaking luck. Yes its one of the few goodies here.
