Codeanywhere - IDE, Code Editor, SSH, FTP, HTML

Codeanywhere is a fully featured Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for your Android device or Mobile IDE which includes a code editor (or text editor), FTP client and SSH terminal console, that has been redesigned and reengineered to be light, fast, and mobile-friendly.

You can think of it as a Sublime Text or VS Code on your Android. Enabling you to code HTML, PHP, CSS or any other of the more than 100 supported coding languages.

The Connection manager lets you connect to any type of server protocol including; FTP, FTPS (explicit, implicit over TLS), SFTP (Secure file transfer over SSH). Also you can connect to third party services like:

• Dropbox
• Google Drive
• OneDrive
• Amazon S3
• Github
• Bitbucket

If you don’t have your own server, Codeanywhere can spin up a Linux container for you, either based on CentOS or Ubuntu. You can use the standard default installations or pick from one of over 50 pre configured including:

• PHP
• HTML
• Ruby
• Wordpress
• Drupal
• Magento
• .NET
• and many more.

Once you are connected Codeanywhere offers you a (FTP) File browser, which enables you to upload, download, rename, delete, update permissions (chmod), run custom commands and more just with the swipe of your finger.

Codeanywhere automatically lets you connect to any supporting server with it’s terminal client for Android including SSH, Bash and Telnet support. Terminal client features include:

• Full colour ssh terminal client
• Extended keyboard
• External keyboard support
• Telnet support
• Copy & Paste to and from the SSH Client
• Multiple tabs enable multiple SSH sessions

On top of all that Codeanywhere enables you to share and collaborate on projects or just a single file - from wherever you are, and of course quickly edit code with our keyboard that has been customised for developers on the go.

Codeanywhere makes developers forget what device they are working on and let them concentrate on getting work done - be it from the phone, tablet, or the desktop.

Key Features:
• Syntax highlighting of more than 100 languages
• Autocomplete for HTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript, Python and PHP
• SSH Terminal Client
• FTP and SFTP Client
• Dropbox Client
• Google Drive Client
• OneDrive Client

The features are great but the app I really buggy. Examples: * I can't remove a new line by hitting backspace. * The quick programming keys (like "{", "}", ";") disappear constantly while editing files. * It is very easy to miss the "save" button, and it is not clear wether you clicked on it correctly or not, resulting in an unsaved file. The only reason I give it 3 and not 1 star is because of the features. If you fix the bugs I won't hesitate giving this app 5/5 stars.

Well, at least ssh works, but the file explorer does not work in the android version at all. IOS app and the web version both work, but this app is in dire need of an update to make it whole again. Unfortunately its beginning to look like this project is no longer actively being developed. The last update in their chang logs was about 18 months ago on any platform.

Switched to codeanywhere and for a long time things were great. I paid for a full year on black friday. The tool is nice works when it's online. However, I cannot recommend them at all. You WILL eventually need to talk to support, and they will totally ignore you for DAYS or WEEKS. As a contractor I cannot wait a week or two to regain access to all of my client accounts. I moved on from them after the final bout of support and was so sick of their issues I figured I would see the year out from what I paid for and not request a refund. Well apparently I left my account on auto bill and was charged again and they are not giving me a refund now. They took a second full year of payment and are not even trying to make it right.

If you're an actual programmer trying to use this anywhere: phone, laptop, desktop... just don't. Unless you wanna spend money just to be able to access your files i don't recommend at all... free trial is maybe okay but after it ends the platform is completely useless, not even allowed to have 1 file let alone set up a simple website or program.

Tried to test on Samsung DEX. I have 10 minutes of usage and now i will list everything your product did wrong. The scaling in dex is wrong Web version: the submenus dont work Cannot change my account password. Created it through git integration -> cannot delete my account Arrows in menus do nothing When scrolling the page, i "outrun" the text loading. I cannot resize the app without being interupted with a notification about my trial time left. Resizing takes too long

I loved the web interface. The Android app was "alright". But slowly, this is turning into a nightmare. Web interface is getting more and more unstable, and the Android does not work on my Samsung Tab S6. Response from support was unhelpful, saying use the web app in Chrome on my tablet. What is the app for then?!?

The service is amazing, but the app... don't work well, I need to login every time and I can't open files, because haven't an file explorer list in project page or in another place... (On web everything work well, there are file explorer, the problem is in the app)

To show others your projects to others or restarting a service or server it's fine. For doing actual coding, bugs in the editor as others have stated prevent you from getting anything done. I have already tried to contact support, but was told that support was only available to paid accounts(i'm on the $7/mo freelancer plan).

Jef. L. Mar 18, 2019

Great features. The experience of using them , however, is bad. Typing is slow. Paste does not work. Opening a folder from the file manager feels sluggish. Needs a lot of work.

I was trying to see is this could be a good system to share my code with my group for a project we were working on. Turns out, it's horrible. The app is a complete mess and requires you to go through multiple different screens to access your projects. Sharing them is another nightmare that none of us have been able to work out. I know I'm on the 7 day free trial but I was expecting the program to give me total access for those 7 days but I'm only allowed access 2 HOURS A DAY to edit my files!

Ale. F. Mar 25, 2019

Surprise! you have to create an account for a 7 day free trial... there is no notification in the play store indicating there is in-app purchases or subscription requirements. false advertising and shaddy as hell. code editing shouldnt require an account! scam!

Max. B. Jun 30, 2020

Used to be OK, though a little buggy. Now I'm stuck with only free plan functionality even though I'm a paid subscriber. Support is nonexistant... Wrote them 4 times over a week. Their only response was it should be working send printscreen (then silence). I would keep away.

For small things like restarting a service: perfect. For writing code while traveling: awful. The file explorer does not even work, when trying to open a connection.

A. G. u. Mar 6, 2019

the fact that you can directly open files from github in the app instead of copy everything is cool but that's the only thing. Otherwise the app doesn't work at all, it keeps freezing you can't type anything

There is a reason this company currently has an F with the BBB. I should have never given them my billing information. I used PayPal and fought tooth and nail to get some money back. Forgot I had bought the trial... The service never worked and there is no one to contact, no email response, no phone number, only a broken ticketing system with a link that has been broken for a year now. PayPal couldn't even get them to respond. This trash should not be allowed on Google Play.

Has a stupid pay wall, and faulty cursor placement. I had to readjust my cursor about 5 times before I finished a sentence. Not usable at all by me. It's an amazing concept though, it just needs to be executed better.

Azu. G. Aug 21, 2020

This application is horrific mess of engineering. This app is what initially motivated me to try Termux + Vim on my phone, the best decision I've ever made. That was over a year ago. Today, nothing in this app works. I see some mildly negative reviews by users, but the usability of this is zero. Not even partial usability, zero usability. The one pro of this app? It has pretty colors. Termux + Vim are monochrome (by default, anyways), yet the difference in ability is so painfully evident.

Tee. P. Mar 16, 2019

great idea bad execution. The app doesn't like to cooperate with the user making typing things into it rather difficult and tedious. I feel like it could be superb if these issues were fixed. Just feels minimally tested...

Ern. R. Feb 20, 2019

I like the app but the special shortcuts that apear above the virtual keyboard are glitchy. I would like to disable them but that option doesnt apear to be available.

Dan. Apr 2, 2020

So it says trial is expired and when I want to go to dashboard to check pricing it asks me login with an account I choose google and it comes with an invalid client error , I sign out login with google wich goes fine and then repeat above steps to get the error again , I cant buy the app or even check pricing in normal way ....

Trash, slow and configuration instructions are soooo bad and useless. Can't believe that they only give you 120 minutes a day, if you're using it for free. How am I supposed to test it if it's this bad, don't bother downloading it.

Ber. E. Ç. Mar 24, 2020

Application experience is very poor. Every pixel of app is fault. TAB key not working and close keyboard, I can't erase new lines, I can't use quotes. Terminal screen not work properly. And I spent my money over it. Just Delete!!

Gab. S. B. Mar 13, 2019

There was a time when Codeanywhere was actually free, with a really restrictive one container limit but still, free. Not a free trial, it was free for real. Now that time has passed, and even this one container now have to be paid for. Like, how many free users you had? Was it such a loss to maintain it for free? Did you really had to start asking for miserable 2 monthly dollars from poor students from even poorest countries to keep yourselves at profit? I don't think so.

Man. C. Jun 29, 2021

Edit: Internal Server Error when I try to login. Meanwhile they are making ads on Facebook. Beware! DO NOT BUY! On desktop it is very good. But here on Android its almost unusable. No support as well, even for paid plans.

Sha. R. May 1, 2022

They stopped updating you can't "code anywhere" anymore they didn't officially discontinue this software but it's done last updated 4 years ago

Ben. L. Aug 12, 2020

The app is OK but selecting text and a few other things can be pretty buggy so there is definitely room for improvement.

Mat. F. Sep 11, 2019

Never using this again. Keeps losing connection, and when it does, it loses all new coding. What a total waste of my time. Avoid at all cost!! Now how do I get my years subscription back?

mik. m. Dec 8, 2018

great bit of kit apart from saving doesnt always work, so its hit or miss. support is absolutely terrible, they often dont reply for weeks/months on end about bugs. news on ticket 39851 please?!!?

Ada. L. Oct 22, 2018

The first screen was asking me to create a codeanywhere account. I thought this was an FTP client and code editor. The first screen should be about opening an Ftp server. Anyway, I don't want to make an account for a data mining cloud service so this is getting uninstalled.
