Best feature: Definitions are followed by examples of the word as used in sentences and phrases, including special expressions or idioms. Regional differences are clearly marked, as well as slang or offensive uses. Audio pronounciation is clear. Each time I look up a word I learn much more than just an English equivalent. The examples give a sense of the living language.
This app (the premium version) is pretty darn good. Not as complete as the unabridged hard-copy version, of course, but still very usable as a quick resource. As a Spanish professor, Collins has long been my choice as a bilingual Spanish-English dictionary. It is based in part on the excellent monolingual "Diccionario de uso del español" by María Moliner, which is highly authoritative and impeccably accurate in terms of actual language usage, as its title implies.
After trying various "free" dictionaries, I paid the money for this: and was delighted! Worth every penny: a really professional tool with loads of real-life examples (which are very important: English speakers will often imagine they understand the word from the cognate English, but meaning and usage in Spanish are often significantly different). Grouses? I can't find the all-important conjugations, which annoyingly seem to be available in the Apple version. "Word of the Day" is often amazingly eclectic. I would like to be able to download the "favourites" list. V. positive: google playstore recognises your devices and (hopefully!) will allow it to be installed on a new one (my mobile is playing up, and will need to be replaced).
This is a very good and comprehensive dictionary. I use it all the time and it has everything I need. The company was extremely helpful when I had a problem reinstalling it on a new phone. Highly recommended.
Privacy issue: this app requires access to personal media (photos, etc.) under the guise of storing dictionary results. I see no reason for this -- thanks but NO <<<
expensive, no audio even if you pay. unusable if you use it for free because of the ads.
Is pretty good, but I have found that I cannot rely on this dictionary alone. Another negative is that links to other words do not always work.
One of the best dictionary ever I like it and I'm using it on a daily basis, thanks Collins.
OK so far. Looks nice! £18.49 is the most I have ever paid for an app so it had better be good. How could you NOT use it in offline mode?
Completely wrong definitions for first 2 words I looked up - desengaño and ilusión. Uninstall it.
Easy to use with all the words in the right place. Great dictionary
The website has better functionality and less intrusive ads
Better than the Oxford in that it has Spanish pronunciation audio
Very detailed translations.
even having given it a decent rating (and paid for it ages ago) it is still nagging me to rate it .. doh!!
At first sight seems most useful. Time will tell
Not as good as the old iOS version, but still good
worst. its totally paid. Spanish dict is far better than this
Very useful and practical
Doesn't need anything else, it's excellent!
Lots of great examples.
Underwhelmed, for an app costing the same as an actual dictionary I am disappointed that the word definitions are so terse and do not usually contain examples of usage. Verb lookup is unusably slow. Also word of the day on the notification is different from what actually comes up.
Notifications are bizarrely disconnected from the actual word of the day. Today's word of the day notification said the word of the day was "feather", but on opening the app, the actual word of the day is "lodacero", meaning sink-hole.
Confusing that there are two similar apps. Too much nagging to rate the app- (every time I use it). Conjugatoms not integrated well. I want to click on back verb and then see that verb fully conjugated in every form.
Good, reliable dictionary for everyday purposes and normal reading. Annoying habit of popping up a message asking me to give it a 5-star rating in the app store even though I actually paid for it, but hopefully that will stop now I've rated it.
This dictionary's examples are helpful and thorough. The app could be improved by the addition of links to verb conjugations and to linguistic and regional abbreviations.
It's a good app and I can give it 5 stars but will give only 4, you know why? Because there is this annoying message that pops up everytime I use this app to give it 5 🌟. It's persistent! Don't force users to like your product. Fix this and trust me guys ratings of your app will improve a lot.
I find this dictionary most helpful - it gives examples of how to use words for most of the entries. Also, it is very easy to use.
Just try it for a few days, must say that it works best
PROS: Excellent content from Collins, on a par with Oxford. CONS: No “share” integration to select and look up words from other apps. Search functionality is very limited; there’s no full text, example or idiom search. The extra content on grammar, pronunciation, abbreviations, etc. isn't included (many dictionary apps do include this). Favorites don't sync across devices. There's no setting for defaulting to Spanish or English search. This seems to change depending on use, but a setting would be better. Word of the day behavior has improved slightly, but it is still confusing and not customizable. The interface has a busy, adware-like appearance. On the home screen of a paid app I don't want to see "Invite Friends" and "Rate App," as if these were features for my benefit. The nagging “rate 5 stars” popup is especially annoying. I much prefer the WordWeb dictionary interface for which currently only the Chambers dictionaries appear to be available.
