I don't understand why Amazon bought a perfectly good app just to make it worse in every way. The comics are all at a much lower resolution than they were on the old app, comic pages don't fill the screen as well as they used to, many of the splash pages no longer rotate when you try to view them in landscape mode, and the layout is less intuitive. It is an ugly, broken mess.
The current version is inferior to the one preceding it. It is quite glitchy. Some functions work for a while and then for no discernable reason will stop functioning properly. This is especially the case with the library sorting function which has decided to be very hit or miss with series groupings. Half of my series which were formally grouped together are now shown as individual issues and are randomly scattered through out my library. Not a plus, to say the least!
The new version has been a terrible experience. They removed all of my comics from my tablet and given an unintuitive user interface in return. Unfortunately, I have a big investment in their comics and now only have this or kindle to read them with. The old version was adapted to comics. The new version seems to be a straight adaptation of the kindle app I used to love this app, and I hope they can improve it. I can't even download comics anymore! I'm not buying comics from the app anymore.
this used to be a great app, but since the Kindle merge its lost so much functionality. navigating the discover lists say for the 2000 item deals for new content now goes back to the beginning every time you look at something to see if you might want it, goes back if you actually buy something, and overall is just a pain. can you not get it to remember how far we'd been looking and pick up there or add some filters or just anything to return useability??
I absolutely hate the interface after the redesign. Would recommend to frustration enthusiasts. This is a minimum-viable product, it has an interface as unwelcoming as Amazon Prime Video and can't do basic things that the Marvel standalone app can (rotate screen, change settings easily... just a complete reduction in quality-of-use).
On the plus side maybe this will get more people to support their local comic book stores. Because on the downside this is the worst user interface I have ever seen, a colossal step down from how it was before. It used to be really intuitive, but Amazon somehow came to the conclusion that they should remove every good feature comixology ever had
Big step backwards. Hopefully Amazon gets the message and some sense of functionality returns soon. This update is a huge fail. Surely some user experience testing prior to release would have made it ridiculously obvious the update is nearly unusable in many ways... I won't bother repeating the issue as they have been covered really well by other reviews.
I've been using Comixology for years and it has always been an amazing app. Amazon in their infinite wisdom have completely destroyed it. It isn't even a shadow of it's former self. I would never have imagined giving Comixology up but, Amazon has shown they are absolutely clueless when it comes to what made this platform so great. They have gotten rid of a lot of features that were useful such as a synopsis, credits, a few preview pages and direct links to other books in the series on one page.
The merger with Amazon's system has been disastrous for the app. The search function is terrible and it's nearly impossible to locate what you're looking for. The new version is a massive step backwards for the quality of the app and I'm reading fewer comics because of it. I wish there was another digital vendor because I'd leave without hesitation.
No filters for deals, search can't find deals. The GUI tries to direct the user rather than enabling the user to search and filter. For example, if I look through the "Deals" section my search bar is removed, which prevents me from easily finding a comic I want to buy if it's there. Instead I'm expected to dig through the entire catalog that doesn't even have the decency to be in alphabetical order.
Was great until the recent update which merged it with Amazon. Now there appears to be no way to add to cart or buy multiple issues in a single transaction. My bank blocked my card after I had to make ~10 £3 transactions. The filtering also isn't as good as it used to be and is pretty counter-intuitive. Sometimes a unified approach to all your apps isn't the best option.
It is with a heavy heart that I give this review of the comicology app. It used to be an absolutely amazing piece software to read digital comics...but now it is a dysfunctional, confusing and actively repelling app. Amazon has taken something wonderful and ruined it. I can only hope they MAYBE wise up and revert the changes...but I'm not holding my breath. The only reason this is a 2 star rating is because of the catalogue.
This app used to be good. But now I can't recommend it really at all in anyway. All of the books that I was reading, my progress has been lost, previous progress of the books that I read before entirely lost. The UI is slower less responsive, and generally just poorer than it was in the previous version of this app. All in all, it's a horrid experience compared to what it once was. Do not recommend if you can use another app or even website to read comics do that instead
The app (post-amazon) is now pretty rubbish. Comixology was originally a targeted platform for comic/graphic novel fans. Now its a generic mess. If you're an enthusiast of something you want to be able to explore and find things that you weren't necessarily looking for but still catch you interest. Amazon have stripped that out of the app by cutting away any category or genre searching and any other exploratory features. It is now essentially a search bar with a fat rack of "prime exclusives".
The app was just fine until the latest update and merge with Amazon. I had all of my comics downloaded to my device, hundreds and hundreds of them but the latest update wiped them from my SD card and it wants me to do it all again. One of their new features listed is faster downloads but that's a lie. It's no better at all. It took me A LONG TIME to do it the first time and now I have to do it again. Way to ruin it Amazon.
It was a great app for digital comics before the update. Now it treats single issues and tpb exactly the same when searching, you have to scroll through 100's of individual books in the sale section (with half of them not even discounted) just to see what's on offer and just the general usage has taken on the worst parts of Amazon's seach functions.
Updated to 1 star - Pages are disappearing and Amazon/Comixology support are ducking for cover and bouncing me around. I don't want to think about how much money I've wasted on comics on here... Original review - This highlights the issues with digital ownership in a locked ecosystem. You have to select every single item individually, so if you have a large comic collection it takes forever to download. The actual shop is poor through the app and the deals section has no filtering.
The content selection is great. The prices are generally fair. The Unlimited subscription is a great value. However, the switch to the new Kindle-style has been jarring. I miss the Smart List feature. My Comixology wish list is gone, replaced by my Amazon wishlist. Navigating books feels less intuitive. This is a step down from the old Comixology app. Unfortunately, when it comes to digital comic books, this app and service has zero competition, and Amazon knows it, so we readers get whatever lame app they give us. I tried Barnes & Noble, but their comic book selection is rather paltry.
I used to use the app all the time, there were occasional issues but generally it was easy to use. I've read maybe two comics since the merge and it's been far more difficult than it should be. I feel bad because I have a big backlog that I might struggle to get through now unless there are some major changes to make using the app easier.
The change to the Amazon/Kindle platform completely butchered the service. Purchasing and searching is an absolute pain. No cart anymore. No real sorting of library. Categories of genres and types (differentiate between comics and manga) is laughably lacking. Took a service where doing nothing would have been a better decision than this. The worst part, they very much knew this would happen, beta testers gave this feedback for months before it launched. They just didn't care.
I'm extremely disappointed with this app after the redesign. It's incredibly unintuitive to the point where I get frustrated enough to close the app instead of reading something. I've edited my previous review from a 5 star to a 1 start. Please reconsider the design. It doesn't need to be complicated.
Downgrading from 5 star to 1 star and cancelling monthly pay. Ui use to be fantastic. The Amazon merger changed a great app into a broken pile of garbage. Searching for anything is impossible, if you select an item then hit back it loses your place in the scroll position, and the results have now changed from what use to be a solid selection of comics to a bunch of random garbage. I really wanted to push through but I just can't. Goodbye old books I purchased I guess :(
I'm not sure why Amazon did this merge thing, but Comixology is ruined. Even on a tablet, its basically ruined. A lot of books will not format to you device, others will only allow you to read in Portrait, just like the kindle comic reader. They updated on 3 28 22, and I'm not seeing any improvement. I wish I could just download my books, and read them on another app. I can't believe Amazon did this
Comixology was a perfectly functional app but then they took away everything good about it and rerouted it through the Kindle store. Goodbye series subscriptions, goodbye in-app shopping, goodbye any sort of reliable user interface. And the app doesn't always work either! So many setttings don't work properly or need obtuse workarounds, the app will ask you to use a setting that you can't access because the Canadian store doesn't function. It's unusable.
The previous version was so much better. If you aren't in the US you can't buy comics in app, or even see the deals or search for a series. Once again amazon has ruined something. Their committee of designers threw out every good aspect of the old versions and decided to destroy a great experience.
Awful revamp by Amazon No more smart lists, collections or easy to browse library. Now you get a list, or a grid, with everything. That's it. The app now has two tabs 'library' and 'discover' except that 'discover' is NOT available for amazon FR and I guess for many other countries as well. I used to love browsing through the new releases and buy a few every month, or seeing related works to a series I loved and buying one or all. No more of that. Just find other apps now. 🤮
