Compact Crossword

Compact crosswords are similar to normal crosswords, but use lines instead of black squares to separate the words.
Advantages of compact crosswords are:

• Grids contains many more words to find for a particular grid size, making it well suited for smaller screens, but great on tablets too
• No wasting half the screen with black squares
• Larger number of crossovers, like US style crosswords, more reward for finding the answers

Compact crossword grids look a little like mazes, and another name for this game is Word Maze.

Other Features:

• Each new grid is generated on-the-fly by the app, meaning unlimited games to play
• Many 1000's of clues, both straight and general knowledge
• You can zoom in & out of the grid, and move around, making it possible to play larger grids even on smaller screens
• Can also generate grids using the more traditional British style grid, and Arrow Crosswords (Arrowords), where the clues are integrated into the grid
• Very configurable game generator, allowing you to specify the grid size, grid type, clue types, difficulty of clues/answers and even the genre of general knowledge questions!
• Ability to save and reload games, so several games can be played at the same time
• Choose between US or UK English spellings
• General knowledge questions tailored to your country (e.g. US, UK, Australia, Canada, etc.)
• Allows you to generate crosswords tailored to your interests, ability, nationality and device size
• Numerous aids in case you get stuck, e.g. validate word/letter, reveal word and even a built-in crossword solver to show potential matches
• Possible to play with your choice of English, French, German and Dutch clues and answers

This game is misleading. It suggests it's an English crossword. So far it's full of stupid things like American abreviations for states and other American spelt words ( these differ to English spellings ) copious amounts of Roman numerals, different words in French and German, any one number of periodic table abreviations and misleading clues unless you happen to be fluent in American....I thought it was going to be English??

Very obscure hints. Sometimes incorrect or nonexistent words. Awful turning a noun into a verb. Very nice UI

It's annoying that I cannot just type the words without having to backspace or keep tapping on the next square.

Compared to most this one does have a larger bank of questions and it has taken a long time for them to start being repeated.

Clues are sometimes totally silly. But generally a good way pass pass time and keep a hand in.

One of the best crossword apps. Excellent choice of styles, levels of difficulty ad the clues tend not to repeat themselves.

When offline it stops two or three times each game. However it resumes from the same point on restarting. Bit of a nuisance.

It's okay, but the clues/answers aren't that good, I've found some that are wrong and it's somewhat repetitive. I did like the different crossword styles available. It was fun for a little while, then it got plain frustrating so I downloaded something else and haven't used this since.

Great crossword app, written in English, not American, so no more shouting at my tablet that odour has a "u" in it. Started on a mid level which I'm finding ok, but it will increase difficulty if want to challenge myself. Will recommend to friends

What's more it is quite flexible.

Really good, of course I prefer more sophisticated and specialized crosswords. For example You can add some scientific or artistic crossword. Interface is very good. Thank you

Great to find a crossword with UK spelling and British type clues.

Gr8 App, lots of fun!!

The occasional ads are tolerable but the accompanying audio is definitely not! After playing a game in a quiet place (library, a bus, a doctor's waiting room etc.) the sudden loud music means that you miss the advert completely because it is a mad scramble to kill the app or turn the volume to zero. Using this app in a quiet place risks the user becoming a social pariah.

Enjoy this game immensely!

One of the harder crosswords available. The clues are short and not very intuitive. I struggle with the puzzles, so not an app to use if you are half asleep. But there are far worse ones in the store.

Good although some of the clues are a bit obtuse sometimes.

What happened to my fav crossword? I updated and the whole thing changed from letter by letter to a crossword puzzle with q & a style. Uninstalling

Nik. A. Jul 10, 2015

Hard enough,yet easy too,easy to use,fab it's UK English,fed up of 'misspellings' on other aps...5star! :)

Gra. P. Feb 19, 2015

Could be easier to navigate between clues. Also after playing at a comfortable level for a while the clues become repetitive. But an enjoyable pastime, ads aren't too intrusive.

Not too hard, or too easy for that matter. A nice way to while away time. I would have given it the full five if it was a little less American English centric...but that is a minor problem.

Got told the guy who invented cross words has died & if want to see his grave it's five across & six down.

I would like to say what a fun game this is. Again Ads appear occasionally, but I get used to that. Other comments duplicate what people have written
