* THE ORIGIN & HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY GOSPEL MUSIC ********************

Urban gospel or Contemporary gospel, a sub-classification of Gospel music, is a newer form of Christian music that involves songs which express collective or personal faith in Christianity, and at the same time provide a Christian alternative to secular mainstream music.

This music style had a gradual development in the 1970s, and became well-established towards the latter part of the next decade. Andrae Crouch's "Take Me Back" and Edwin Hawkins's "Oh Happy Day" were some of the popular songs that helped further the progress of Contemporary gospel music in the industry. Andrae Crouch is acknowledged as the "godfather of contemporary gospel."

Both traditional black gospel music and Contemporary gospel has been influenced by country, rhythm & blues, and rock โ€˜n roll, and to some extent (for the latter), jazz, disco, funk and several other genres. R&B and hip hop are considered to have the heaviest influences on Contemporary gospel, followed by Christian rock and soul. Electric guitar, piano, bass guitar, and drums are the typical instruments used.

Representative artists of Contemporary Gospel music that are well-known include pastor John P. Kee (considered the โ€œCrown Prince of Gospelโ€), Tramaine Hawkins, Vickie Winans, Donnie McClurkin, radio show host Yolanda Adams, and choir leader and book author Kirk Franklin.

Looking at your C C M,list, .go back to your beginning of C C M,then check out the Southern Gospel list. I at first didn't know to think of your music, until l became aware of your quartets in the early 1960's, when I really appreciated the sounds of it.I ๐ŸŒŸ ed to admire the groups with 4 + 6 on a barbershop group. Singing in perfect harmonies. One of best transplants, thee Imperials as they made residence in Hawaii. Son's of the original members regrouped into another group, same music and name.
