Nonogams, also known as pic-a-pix, paint by numbers puzzles, crucipixel, edel, figurepic, grafilogika, japanilaiset, karala, kare, logicolor, logigraphe, oekaki, pikurosu or ristikot, started appearing in Japanese puzzle magazines. Non Ishida published three picture grid puzzles in 1988 in Japan under the name of "Window Art Puzzles". Subsequently in 1990, James Dalgety in the UK invented the name Nonograms after Non Ishida, and The Sunday Telegraph started publishing them on a weekly basis.

In japanese nonograms the numbers are a form of discrete tomography that measures how many unbroken lines of filled-in squares there are in any given row or column. For example, a clue of "4 8 3" would mean there are sets of four, eight, and three filled squares, in that order, with at least one blank square between successive groups. To solve Japanese nonogram, one needs to determine which squares will be filled and which will be empty. These nonograms are often black and white, describing a binary image, but they can also be colored. If colored, the number clues are also colored to indicate the color of the squares. In such crossword two differently colored numbers may have a space in between them. For example, a black four followed by a red two could mean four black boxes, some empty spaces, and two red boxes, or it could simply mean four black boxes followed immediately by two red ones.Hanjie has no theoretical limit on size, and is not restricted to square layouts.

Griddlers were implemented by 1995 on hand held electronic toys in Japan. They were released with name Picross

The first ones in each set are too easy and the outcome distorted. But the higher up i am going, i see the level are better and better to look at. Im concerned that because you tried to put in too much color in some of the harder ones, if you lost the actual logic& challenge that comes with these kind of puzzles. The POSITIVE--As the squares get larger past the 1st 2-3 lvl/pages, some of images are bigger and are pretty, & fun figuring them out. ENJOY THE CHALLENGING NONOGRAMS!!

Love this game. Although changed to Google pixel 6 recently... And it appears I must have had a different account as it didn't sync my progress which was over a good few years. But I enjoyed it enough to start again. Along with the black and white one. 2 of the 3 games I use

It is a good game and addicting. I just do not want on this game that its either I play an ads on every game or pay for it. This game has no consideration.

I don't know if this was designed for tablets, but there is so much wasted screen real estate, from useless blank spaces to very fat fonts. When my first move on any puzzle is to spend 5-10+ secs just to zoom in to try and fit the puzzle to the screen as best I can...

The best nonogram app I've found, and I've looked through many, but none compare. This is my favorite app. I've solved ALL the puzzles, Ashigaru through Shogun and I'm on the constant lookout for fresh updates. I play CrossMe (black and white version) while I wait for those color updates :) FYI, well worth the $5 I spent years ago, and the puzzles keep coming !

I love the huge size of the puzzles as you complete more of the game, it's a great mental challenge and I love the end result. Excellent game! I just found the settings to adjust my game play experience so I'm excited about that. Might I suggest a way to show I've finished using a color on the puzzles to aid my experience on the really large puzzles?

Basically you get instructional puzzles with this. The controls are NOT very clear, even for someone who has done this type of puzzle for many years. I might pay for this app if it came across as functional or if the teasers they use for the free ones gave any indication of how good the paid pictures would be. The free puzzles give no indication of how good or bad the rest of the puzzles will be. That is all the room I have been given to review this app, it is not a recommended purchase.

The controls make the game just feel horrible to play, because you have to hold for two seconds to be able to slide to do multiple, and the only way to add a cross is to double tap. A shame too because the aesthetic of the game is wonderful but the controls ruin it completely.

Had the paid version of this maybe 4 years ago. Then it had excellent quality, challenging puzzles. This version wouldn't inspire me to buy again. The puzzle quality is extremely poor. Example #2.70 and #2.71, record player and apple? Really? Very poor quality. Want to buy the full version again but can't be sure the quality will improve. Very disappointing.

I have both B&W and Color versions and I love them! New puzzles are being added. My only complaint is minor. I used to be able to save the screen in a file option but it's not there anymore. I used this when I was stuck and wanted to try different options for moving forward. This feature is currently available on the plain version but not the color. Otherwise, I LOVE these. I have done every picture on both and I am always looking forward to new puzzles.

I was absolutely loving this game until section 2, when I had 3 choices: 1- Watch a 30 second video to unlock every new game (no thanks!) 2- Pay 0.99 to unlock 300 puzzles (ehhh) 3- Pay $4.99 to unlock all 3000 puzzles. I wasn't thrilled with the idea of paying but I'm glad I did because this is a great twist on puzzle cross-type games. Graphics are nice, basic gameplay is easy, BUT the different shades of blue can be a bit hard to see. They even let you restore purchases, which is AMAZING!

I don't understand why people are complaining about having to watch an ad to unlock each puzzle. It's a free app, they have to make money. If you don't want to watch the ads then it only costs $1 to unlock 300+ puzzles. It's a way better deal than 90% of free apps out there. I really enjoy this one but I think it would be more exciting if there were events or something to do instead of just completing puzzles. But it is the best nonogram out there 😁👍🏻

This is a fun game. It's very pretty and it grades from really easy to really hard. I think that the advertising (and other options) to unlock a new game are more than fair. I have puzzled over some of these for a good long time but the pictures you get are actually pictures OF something and not head-scratchers (which have made me abadon other nonogram games because I didn't see the point) ! The tools and functionality are very good Very enjoyable game.

Best nonogram app there is. I've purchased both apps made by this developer. The non-colored version i purchased many years ago, and i just recently bought the colored one. To my surprise, they are STILL adding puzzles to both apps! I've dealt with greedy, unethical app developers in the past, that have made me hesitant to spend money on apps. These guys are the complete opposite! Well worth the money to support them, but the ads are more than bearable if you can't.

So imagine for a second, you're playing a nonogram game and everything is fine. It's fairly easy to use, the pictures are fun, and things are looking great. Then after about 20 easy puzzles, the game suddenly tells you that you can no longer play unless you watch a video to unlock 1 puzzle or pay to unlock more puzzles. So basically, they got cash-grabby, and I hate cash-grabby apps. If every few puzzles required a video to unlock, that's fine. But not every. single. ONE.

Do not have to spend money. Can continue to play after original free puzzles. Easily transferred to different device. Great variety of levels. Complete control over difficulty level to play. Extensive variety in pictures. Can move to different puzzles if struggling to figure one out. Can then come back to it later to work on more. Only negative, cannot figure out how to use hint feature. Black and white game great also, but prefer color.

I love how this game doesn't require the internet to play. I love doing puzzles, just getting to the last level, and Bam! They put out an explosion of new puzzles! I'm never bored, always challenged, and look forward to the new updates to see what's been improved. I especially like the latest: transferring your progress to any device! Great job, developers!

"My 2nd most loved puzzle game" I love that when i get stuck and before i start getting frusterated on a certain puzzle. I can always move on to another puzzle because the game saves my progress. which allows me to come back to it and continue where I left off ,without having to start the puzzle from the beginning again.

I got this way back when the original Kindle Fire was new. They promised no ads and never pay again for puzzles. They promised to always add new puzzles. They kept their promises. I don't play everyday. When I am playing I play a lot, then I close it for a month or 2. It is the best of these Nonograms. The puzzles are diverse, the colors are endless. And I've never had to pay again or deal with working around an ad.

Cat. Apr 12, 2021

There are wide variety of puzzle sizes. The control is easy. Colours makes it more fun. Hints could be improved. It has limited hints and the hints are randomly mark few spaces which sometimes u don't even know which part has been marked. A "check" function would be good to know whether u made an error. Otherwise, great job developers.

Kac. N. Apr 2, 2022

Have the color switch when all of the color have been crossed out. Have an "x" button instead of having to double click to get it

Not as horrible as some others but that's a really low bar. Interface is weird and awkward, tried to force me through a tutorial which, no. And then you have to pay to unlock more than 2 puzzles? Save time and money and skip this one.

Ker. L. Nov 18, 2021

I enjoy this game. The puzzles are locked so you have watch an ad for each puzzle. I decided to pay $1 on Nov 4 thinking that unlocked 428 puzzles. Today everything is locked again and I have to watch videos. I did not do 428 puzzles in 2 weeks time. Very frustrating. Just watch the videos; don't waste your money.

Great game. I didn't like at first that it does not show if you make an error, but the puzzles so far are quite solvable without needing that, so I have been happy. I am happy to watch an ad to play a puzzle. Happy for developers to get paid for their work. I wish more people felt that way instead of just wanting everything completely free.

Ama. R. Mar 11, 2022

I love this game. I have completed all the puzzles and cannot wait for an update. That is the main complaint I have with this game is that updates take forever to come.

Kel. R. Jul 12, 2020

Love that it's in color...it would be nice to have a separate x button instead of having to toggle to it by selecting square twice also would be nice to have the slide selector on a quicker response time. Currently you have to hold your selected square until a counter appears and then you can slide to color in a range of cells.

Pho. Sep 16, 2020

The interface is straightforward & uncluttered. The pictures are fun & cute. NOT FULLY FREE, levels can be played free, only after watching a 10-30 second ad before every puzzle (once past the intro stages). Otherwise puzzles can be unlocked in a large chunk for about $1 & all puzzles for about $5.

Pat. P. Apr 26, 2022

Really challenging game. I wish there was an option to reveal a cell. When I get stuck there is no help.

Mic. W. Mar 20, 2022

Bought this forever ago(at least 5 or more years ago). BEST $6 I EVER SPENT. Everytime I get to the end I erase all my data and start over. By the time I restart they have added so many more puzzles. Great exercise for the brain aslo very calming and satisfying. 10/5 stars
