Crosswords

Crosswords is played by the same rules as a famous word-formation board game. (This site's policies prohibit my mentioning its name.) Crosswords supports games between from one to four human or robot players, in most European languages via downloadable dictionaries, and between smartphones and tablets over the wireless network, Bluetooth, or using SMS/text messages. Crosswords is free/open source software, and has no annoying ads.
In fact, my Friends say I should call it Words Without Ads.

You may wonder why Crosswords requires so many permissions. Here are the ones you're most likely to question:

* Receive/send SMS messages

If, and only if, you have explicitly enabled the "Allow games via SMS" feature, Crosswords lets you exchange moves transparently via SMS so you don't require a server. The ability to send and receive SMS messages is required for this (even though the type of SMS messages Crosswords uses, "data" messages, does not show up in the Messaging app.) If you do not enable this feature Crosswords will not use SMS-related permissions.

* Read call log/contacts

Again, these permissions are used only if you explicitly enable play via SMS. They allow Crosswords to let you lookup the phone number of someone to invite/challenge.

* Run at startup

If you are playing games via the internet/relay and don't have "Google Cloud Messaging" enabled then periodically Crosswords checks to see if there are any moves waiting for you. Without this permission it could not start checking after you rebooted your phone until you actually started it, which not everybody thinks to do.

* Prevent phone from sleeping

There is an optional setting, disabled by default, that keeps the screen on for a longer period. It was requested by users who found the board going dark while they were studying it. If you do not enable this setting this permission is not used.

Crosswords is rated for mature audiences because very very rarely the robot will play a "nasty" word.

Awesome Scrabble clone app! The history behind this app and the fact that's it's still supported on Android to this day is amazing! Huge thanks to the dev for the free app! One major problem for me: in all due respect, the game looks harsh on the eyes. Perhaps you can focus on improving the graphics? One fix would be to make the tile borders thicker to improve visibility. Overall, the game just needs a new coat of paint, visually. The cool features are the highlight. Works well online!

The disallow phonies option does not warn you. So, after you play, you realize that you have lost a turn. (Sometimes, the play is inadvertent because a player may not remember if a particular word is allowed.) The warn if phonies option, however, will still let a player force it thru while others may not be able to do anything about it. I think it would be nice to have something in between. It would be nice if the disallow option warns you and say if you continue you "forfeit" your turn.

MUCH better than any of the other Scrabble variations. The developer is very responsive. The upcoming block phonies feature will make this game the best of them all! Finally an option to play Scrabble without all the annoying ads and other juvenile garbage others throw at us. No more jewells, coins, special offers or social networking cruft to wade through before I can play my game! Very straightforward Scrabble clone.

Excellent. Got me through self-quarantine (because my wife and I could play from different rooms). No ads.

It'd be nice if it had a blacklist for the computer's words.

From Palm to Android, this still remains the best scrab app for serious Collins dictionary scrabblers! The developer constantly updates his app to all the new wordlists, which is excellent.

Updated: Still the best game available. I play against my wife all the time. Some reviewers are concerned about weird words.This is a function of the dictionary that you use. The larger ones contain real words that are rarely used outside of crosswords and scrabble. I play against the robot with a very hard dictionary. I almost always lose, but my game has improved tremendously. Give the robot a lower level dictionary if you don't like to lose.

Like the ability to choose wordlist. Would be better with a larger range of AI, including easy AI.

This is THE perfect scrabble-like game, can be played on a single device (you pass your phone/tablet from player to player). Huge range of features to suit different play styles, and it's down to the judgement of the players to decide if a word is valid. Highly recommend!

A year from my original review and this is still one of my favorite games. Really well done Like the robot play. Great settings, great play experience.

I love the customisation and how you are allowed to have say whether or not a word is acceptable. These things are hard to find.

Excellent freeware. It is the best scrabble game so far for android. Thanks a lot.

Updating my review.....July 17........Not happy with newest update. Letters in rack are huge now...which minimizes the board view. Have to scroll from top or bottom for board view. ( cannot see full board in screen ). Hope they fix this. Very annoying to me. Was leary about downloading game to vtab. Not alot of reviews for it on games. Don't play a lot of games; but do enjoy scrabble periodically. Looks good on the vtab. All functions on screen. Easy to learn the app. Automatically saves game for later. Works great for me.

Read synopsis exactly as described. Thanks.

Why is this called crosswords? It's scrabble! And a lame version at that. Should change the title of app, as most ppl would expect crossword puzzles.

Gets 5 stars from me. It's not flashy but it's a smart, addictive, highly customisable, well produced free game of scrabble which is very enjoyable to play against. Well done to the developer and I like the fact that it's regularly updated with new features.

An extraordinary venture into vocabulary. The simulator is excessively competitive and strategically educated. An exceedingly valuable application, free!

A. G. u. Nov 22, 2011

Very good app. However, make crosshairs optional (annoying!) and have option where last word played is in another color.

A. G. u. Jun 2, 2011

It's not flashy, it's just Scrabble. Pretty much all you need. Thanks to all concerned.

Versatile and thorough scrabbling experience.
