Worst app EVER! Try to read the articles and the screen keeps jumping around, making reading IMPOSSIBLE. Who can read moving and jumping text? Then, when one tries to get out, one is locked into selecting this or commenting on that, never letting go, as if by keeping one there, one might continue. Next time this happens, no matter how good the article might be or howucj I love science, I am scrubbing this POS from my phone. PEROD. *** I have nothing more to say ***
very informative with our new technology and Science! Great for kids wanting to learn about everything that they want and show them the universe and beyond! And teach people about Quantum Physics and how it's all the make up of the universe!
Good content and easy to navigate, but pages often don't load properly when you click the button to read the entire article. For example, gigantic blank ads often cover the entire screen. Hitting the back button kicks you out of the article, and there doesn't appear to be any way to actually close these blank ads. Plenty of other science apps out there. Not worth the hassle of trying to navigate through this garbage.
I really like this app. The summaries are great for the stories. However once you actually start reading an article, many ads start popping up, lagging the article. At times randomly making it so you can no longer read the article. As well as start randomly moving up and down through the article because new ads start loading it in. I don't mind that you want to make money through ads. I would appreciate it however if you made it so the ads don't destroy your reading experience.
Ads appear FAR too often. Not only are they included in the body of the text (tolerable), as you scroll down they also appear on your whole screen, repeatedly within a single article. It is jarring and very annoying. This app was once good I recall. EDIT: Some time has passed and I downloaded again to see how things have changed. It seems the ads are more manageable now, not so jarring and only taking over the screen after finishing a read. Updated stars accordingly, will see how things go.
I love scientific news so this is a good source. The amount of ads is insane. Yes understand it is a revenue source. There is a problem with the text size: you can enlarge it but when you click to read more of an article the font size defaults to a smaller font. Makes no sense. And settings function is useless, only asks if you want to subscribe to premium app
Every time I click on a news story and the app redirects me to the article a cookies window always appears on the web page, which is normal. However, the problem is that in this app the cookies window appears usually at the bottom of the web page or it just isn't possible to reach, but you can still see flashes of it popping up on the screen, which makes it very difficult to read the article. Besides, the amount of notifications I get every day is absurd. I can't read that many articles a day!
Some really interesting articles offered in the pull down menu but good luck finding some especially when two articles are paired in the news section. You will never find them. This section is nothing but frustration. They really need to fix the constant jerking around as you try to read. Too many pop up ads lock the screen up and want allow you to continue to read the article. Really need to fix these problems or better yet redesign the app.
I've been needing something like this for so long! Shame on me for not discovering it sooner! Paying the £2 every 3 months for no ads. No brainer! 1 thing I'd like to be implemented though is the option to show the full article when you click the initial news link on story. I wanna read the whole thing that's why I clicked on it. I don't wanna click again and load another page to read full article. Skip this step.
Has great stories, but the ads are intrusive, which is why the three stars. You have to click on a button to finish a story you started, then when you hit the back button you are forced to watch a 15-30 second ad with no way out. Makes me loose interest in using the app if I have to keep waiting for an ad to end. I just close the app and move on to a different one. I understand you need to make money, but there are better ways to advertise to us, other news apps seem to have figured it out.
I've used two versions of Science Daily, and both have been immensely helpful in my exam preparations. It is a simply designed app, with an excellent interface that endears to even the most non-techsavvy people. Kudos. This app is a little laggy, though; the blue version operates eay better, but doesn't seem to havr the same amouny of content. i don't know if this is just my perception, but I'd thank you to look into it.
I understand the need for ads in an app. Everyone needs an income. But what I don't understand, is why an app upon which you 'read' articles would allow ads to pop up in the middle of the passage you're reading, that's blatantly forcing people to either purchase the monthly subscription, or delete the app. In my case, a student with no income, unable to purchase said subscription, will inevitably, due to frustration, delete the app.
When you get a notification and then click on that notification, it takes you to the app. That's good. However, most of the time the 1st thing you see is pop up ad. A lot of times there is no close (X) mark to be found on the add. The only way to close that ad is either close the app or hit the back button. When you do either of these actions, you can no longer find that story BTW, I am an Android user.
The ads are downright horrifying. Read an article, back arrow to get back to the main page, and get presented with a full-screen ad that can't be exited. This happens even on articles from sites I've visited separately without such ads, so I know the ad is not coming from the source site but from this app. Had this app for <24 hours before I uninstalled it.
Wouldn't recommend. Lots of websites linked to are "clickbaity" - you know the type, you'll read an article and at the bottom will be "doctor discovers 'magical' weight loss method"; "gain muscle with this one simple trick!" etc. These sites make me feel dirty. Oftentimes the articles linked through the app are locked behind a pay wall. Push notifications don't take you to the articles they mention, they're just a shortcut to open the app, regardless of the content mentioned. Not great.
I pay a subscription for this app and still get inundated with adverts. Not good guys!
Good content brought together but app is buggy, often greys out my screen or locks up (Note10). Adverts are obtrusive, in addition to the typical ads nestling between articles you sometimes get an ad when clicking on an article link, or when opening up the app... Or sometimes literally just out of the blue when reading an article! As a free news app there's no point in complaining but it definitely affects the experience.
Always need my daily dose of science. Science News gives me what I need.
This app is almost unusable with all articles nearly unreadable due to the sheer amount of ads! Constantly popping up over the articles, or just completely taking over the screen to take you to another page! Non stop skipping about from top to bottom of the page you're trying to read. Just awful.
Initially great app to get daily science news. Until ads ruin it crashing the page. I see in other replies support says issue is with the site ads out of their control, but if I copy the link and open it in a browser I don't have the same problem so the issue is with your app. I shouldn't have to do this as a work around but it's the only way to guarantee an interesting article i'm in the middle of reading won't be ruined by Ad crashes. Would be 5 stars if fixed.
I really like the feature about the notifications. But whenever i try to open a notification the whole screen is darkened because cookies or maybe advertisments are blocking me to read the news in non-darkened mode (i can't find the accept button anywhere). This is frustrating since i find some topics from the notifications interesting to read. Edit (20/05/2021): Workaround provided by app team.
A decent selection of sources. Every article leads to a teaser, which leads you to the real article. I don't like having to scan through the first page, or so, of text, to find my place in the actual article. Some articles dead-end in a way that makes it difficult to get back to the application.
Had to delete. Can't read an article anymore because ads have taken over the app. Some ads can't be removed and render the article unreadable. The app developer says the source of the ads come from the websites the articles originate from, however it wasn't like this before. This is a recent occurrence. Do not download this app. The ads are ridiculously annoying. Too bad, used to be a good app.
Good app. Lots of interesting materials. Two things small things i would improve: 1st: make the order of your topics customizable so you can quickly see your most prefered and 2. Don't ask me to confirm quitting the app, i know what im doing, worst case i dont, ill just open it again or if you keep that feature, make pressing the 'back' button confirm leaving rather than going back into the app. Apart from that, thanks for the app
Good app on paper, but the UI needs massive improvement. Ads cover content all the time, you can't change the text scaling, and sometimes windows that prompt you to accept cookies and whatnot pop up and cover the text, and you have to scroll for a minute to get to the checkboxes.
Was one of my favorite science news sources, before it was hijacked by the adpocalypse!! I get a news feed push notification, but once I open to read, it opens an ad that you cannot close without closing the app and reopening; but you lose the article and it's difficult to find again. Or ads will pop up and bounce you around the page making you lose your place. Congratulations!! To the developer, you just earned yourself an unfollow and removed app!
I despise the approach to scamming thia Application takes. Specifically, none of the links to articles go to FULL ARTICLES. ITS ALWAYS THAT DAMN clickbait 'Continue reading' link that takes to some download or another, but never the rest of the article! Do not download. It has now (08/20) become bloated with ads that overlay content. Still a trash application. Nothing a good aggregator like arxiv can't cover.
Great in theory, terrible in practice. So many intrusive ads I am giving up in frustration. Often I get an interesting notification but when I try to read the article my screen is blocked by ads and there is no way to make them go away, so I try to remember the title and look for it on my navigator instead. When I manage to read the beginning, there are ads everywhere in the body of the text, but also new ones popping up, making me lose where I was in the text or blocking my screen. So annoying.
