Derecho Internacional Humanitario

International humanitarian law (IHL) is a branch of public international law that seeks to limit the effects of armed conflicts by protecting people who do not participate in hostilities or who have decided to stop participating in the confrontation, and restrict and regulate the means and methods of war available to combatants; regulates behavior in armed conflicts (ius in bello).

It consists of a series of standards, mostly reflected in the 1949 Geneva Conventions and their additional protocols.

The norms of international humanitarian law are intended to prevent and limit human suffering in times of armed conflict.

In turn, it seeks to limit or prohibit the use of certain methods of warfare, but does not determine whether a country has the right to resort to force, as established by the United Nations Charter.

These norms are mandatory for both the governments and the armies participating in the conflict as well as the various armed opposition groups or any party participating in it.
